Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rose Garden of Persia To the Orientalist is known the extreme dith culty of conveying in any European tongue the exact meaning of the poet: the Germans have perhaps succeeded best in consequence of the con struction of their language; but mere words alone in Persian sometimes express so much that the translator finds all his efforts unavailing to render them of the same force. For instance, the Per sians have words and names which at one view exhibit many qualities without more explanation, and which throw a charm over their songs, impos sible to reach. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rose Garden of Omar Khayyam: Founded on the Persian It is 1nevitable that a man of so many sides and Of such accomplishment should have been, like Shake speare, variously regarded. The varying interpreta tions, literal or mystical, applied to his writings, his keen power of mockery, his capacity in the mere statement of a proposition which he contested, of hanging his doubt or refutation thereon, contributed to this result. For in addition to the above views of him he has been deemed a free thinker; a man of science; a 5072 a devout and orthodox Mussulman; a railer at religion and morality; a pes simist; a serene epicure absorbed in the pleasures Of the present and claimed by materialist and Sufi alike. All of which goes to show, if it shows anything, the greatness and universality of Omar's real nature. Doubtless if the old Persian were now permltted to characterize himself, he would use the formula of Bottom as applied to Snug the joiner, in the role of Lion, I am a man as other men are. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gulzar; Or the Rose-Bower: A Tale of Persia It was now that season of the year when all nature seemed ready to burst forth into joy and gladness. Win ter had fled, and the young buds were putting forth their tender leaves, the Earth was robing herself in her mantle of green, the song of the bulbul was heard among the young rose-leaves, the laugh of happiness came echoing along the clear breast of the river; but all brought not the smile of joy to the eye of the fading gulzar, nor the bloom of health to the cheek of the daughter of aga. The heart of the Shah grew sad as he witnessed the decline of his beautiful and favorite child - the hope of his old age - the daughter of his loved and loving FA Tmm - and he ordered proclamation to be made over all his Kingdom, announcing the sickness of the Princess, and offering a reward equal to the ransom of a Prince, to him who should restore to health and happiness his only child. No sooner had the proclamation been made, than from afar came the most renowned Doctors of Iran, from the burning sands of Kirman, and the frozen mountains of Tartary - from the East, North, West and South came the young and the old to behold the waning Star of Teheran, fondly hoping that some one of them might be so fortunate as to restore to joy and happiness the lovely daughter of the King. The AJL Judaica Bibliography Award was established to encourage the publication of outstanding Judaica bibliographies. The intellectual legacy of the ancient community of Iranian Jews rests in several large but neglected Judeo-Persian manuscript collections. The largest in the West, and the third largest collection in the world (198 manuscripts), belongs to the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. Primarily a work of reference, this Catalog informs scholars in the fields of Judaica and Iranica about the range of subjects (history, poetry, medicine, philology, etc.) that engaged Iranian Jews between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. It reflects the intellectual parameters of Iranian Jewry by describing the extent to which they were acquainted with classical Jewish texts while they were deeply enmeshed in the literary and artistic sensibilities of their Iranian environment.

Book Gulshan I Raz The Mystic Rose Garden

Download or read book Gulshan I Raz The Mystic Rose Garden written by E. H. Whinfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gulshan I Raz; The Mystic Rose Garden: Of Sa'd Ud Din Mahmud Shabistari, the Persian d104, With an English Translation and Notes, Chiefly From the Commentary of Muhammad Bin Yahya Lahiji The Gulshan i Raz was composed in A.H. 717 (A.D. 1317), in answer to fifteen questions on the doctrines of the Sufis, or Muhammadan Mystics, propounded by Amir Syad Hosaini, a celebrated Sufi doctor of Herat. The author's name was Sa'd ud din Mahimud Shabistari, so called from his birth-place, Shabistar, a village near Tabriz, in the province of Azarbaijan. From a brief notice of his life in the Mujalis ul 'Ushshak, repeated in substance in the Haft Iklim, the Safina i Khushgu, and the Riaz ush Shu'ara, it would appear that he was born about the middle of the seventh century of the Hejira (A.D. 1250), and that he died at Tabriz, where he had passed the greater part of his life, in A.H. 720. The only particulars of his life recorded in these Tazkiras are, that he was devotedly attached to one of his disciples named Shaikh Ibrahim, and that in addition to the Gulshan i Raz he wrote treatises entitled Hakk ul Yakin and Risala i Shahid. No further information as to the circumstances of his life and times is to be found in the poem itself or in the commentary, but we know from the Habib us Siyar and other chronicles that his birth was about contemporaneous with the incursion of the heathen Moghuls under Hulaku Khan, the conquest of Persia, Syria and Mesopotamia, and the downfall of the Abbaside Khalifs, or "Vicars of God." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Garden of Roses, and Valley of Lilies IT is a matter for wonder, that so few of the works of the B. Thomas a Kempis are known to the English reader; and this the more, that they all breathe the same meek and warm spirit of piety and devotion we meet with in that golden book attributed so popularly to his name, and this more over to such an extent, that it is dith cult to believe that there should ever have been any hardy enough to deny, that the author of these, and of The Imitation of Christ, were identical. NO matter how ill or weary she might be, she would hasten to save them from the necessity of doing anything that she could do. They accepted the service as a matter Of course. Their father had never been very rich. A certain economy had always been necessary in his household; when, in the winter, the ques tion of new gowns and wraps recurred, it was understood, Of course, that the girls were to have the most costly articles of that kind; while their mother was contented to take what was left after they had gotten what they fancied they needed. They had seal-skin sacks and diamond ear rings; while their mother, still young, and certainly more interesting in every way than her daughters, wore cheap garments. But nobody seemed to be struck by the strangeness of this arrangement. It was not singular in their set; it was the rule for mothers to take the second place even before their daughter assumed long gowns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rosary The Peaceful stillness of an English summer afternoon brooded over the park and gardens at Overdene. A hush of moving sunlight and lengthening shadows lay upon the lawn, and a promise of refreshing coolness made the shade of the great cedar tree a place to be desired. The old stone house, solid, substantial and unadorned, suggested unlimited spaciousness and comfort within; and was redeemed from positive ugliness without, by the fine ivy, magnolia trees, and wistaria, of many years' growth, climbing its plain face, and now covering it with a mantle of soft green, large white blooms, and a cascade of purple blossom. A terrace ran the full length of the house, bounded at one end by a large conservatory, at the other by an aviary. Wide stone steps, at intervals, led down from the terrace on to the soft springy turf of the lawn. Beyond - the wide park; clumps of old trees, haunted by shy brown deer; and, through the trees, fitful gleams of the river, a narrow silver ribbon, winding gracefully in and out between long grass, buttercups, and cow-daisies. The sun-dial pointed to four o'clock. The birds were having their hour of silence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers Culled From the Gulistan, or Rose Garden, and From the Bostan, or Pleasure Garden of Sadi: A Persian Poet, Who Flourished in the 13th Century Of the distinguished authors of Persia, none perhaps have enjoyed in the Eastern world a more decided and wider popularity than Sadi, and few, if indeed any, have so nearly attained that rank even in our Western world. He early won the attention of European scholars through a Latin translation of his best known work, the Gulistan, or Rose Garden, made by George Gentius, and published by him at Amsterdam, A.D. 1651, under the title of Rosarium Politicum. The fame of this celebrated production has since, but with a considerable interval of time, been extensively diffused by other translations into the principal languages of Europe: in our own by those of Gladwin, Dumoulin, Lee, Ross, and more recently an excellent one by Professor Eastwick; in German, by Nesselmann and Graf; in France, by Semelet.
