Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Rosary is an inexhaustible source of divine blessings. Its excellence is attested to by countless saints from every corner of the earth down through the centuries. This book, "The Rosary with Icons: in Latin & English," delves into this treasury of grace and gathers into a single volume a well-ordered variety of good things from the Tradition of the Church which can be of benefit to people of all ages. The Large Print can serve to make this book accessible to the very young, as well as to those whose eyes are not as keen as they once were. The prayers and Scripture meditations for each Mystery are presented in both Latin and English in order to foster greater usage and appreciation for Latin, the unique "Mother Tongue" of the Roman Catholic Church. The 15 original decades are included as well as the new Luminous Mysteries given to the Church by the great Marian Pope, Saint John Paul II. Beautiful, full-color iconography from the Eastern Orthodox tradition accompany each Mystery. This feature greatly assists in the contemplation of the Lives of Christ and His Blessed Mother, the "Theotokos" or Mother of God. Saint John Paul II was singularly devoted to the the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is well-known that he chose his personal motto, "Totus Tuus," -- "All Thine" -- to reflect his great affection, trust and love for Our Lady. Being from Poland, he was also ever mindful of the Christian East, of its treasures and gifts so needed and yet so often overlooked by the West. As an Eastern Catholic, I also recognize this need for greater awareness of the Eastern Christian tradition on the part of Roman Catholics. This book is, then, also a response to the exhortation which Pope John Paul II made to the Church in his Apostolic Letter, Orientale Lumen: "Since, in fact, we believe that the venerable and ancient tradition of the Eastern Churches is an integral part of the heritage of Christ's Church, the first need for Catholics is to be familiar with that tradition, so as to be nourished by it and to encourage the process of unity in the best way possible for each." And so, my hope is that this book will find its way into the prayerful hands of people of all walks of life. It is perfectly suited for the classroom or as part of a homeschool curriculum, for the elderly, for those who love Orthodox iconography, for those growing or who wish to grow in their knowledge of Latin and who wish to learn to pray in the language of the Church without expending too much effort. Finally, this book is for anyone who loves the Rosary and it will make a wonderful gift for anyone who wishes to share that love with others.

Book excerpt: What happens when a former Zen Buddhist monk and his feminist wife experience an apparition of the Virgin Mary? “This book could not have come at a more auspicious time, and the message is mystical perfection, not to mention a courageous one. I adore this book.”—Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit Before a vision of a mysterious “Lady” invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets she had hidden within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries—secrets of a past age when forests were the only cathedrals and people wove rose garlands for a Mother whose loving presence was as close as the ground beneath their feet. She told Strand and Finn: The rosary is My body, and My body is the body of the world. Your body is one with that body. What cause could there be for fear? Weaving together their own remarkable story of how they came to the rosary, their discoveries about the eco-feminist wisdom at the heart of this ancient devotion, and the life-changing revelations of the Lady herself, the authors reveal an ancestral path—available to everyone, religious or not—that returns us to the powerful healing rhythms of the natural world.

Nearly two decades later, Immaculée continues to pray the rosary every day and marvels at how she is constantly renewed and richly rewarded by rejoicing in this glorious prayer. It has helped her in every aspect of her life, from literally saving her life to strengthening her faith, easing sorrows, changing heartache into happiness, healing illnesses in herself and others, solving family problems, landing a dream job, finding long-lost friends, and even locating lost keys! She received so many blessings from the rosary, in fact, that she decided to study its history and origins. She soon discovered that it was not just meant for Catholics, but that the Virgin Mary promised a life filled with blessings to everyone from any religion who faithfully recited the rosary daily . . . and this was such wonderful news that she vowed to share it with as many people as she could. In The Rosary: The Prayer That Saved My Life, Immaculée reveals how the rosary’s many blessings can be reaped by each and every one of us. In this moving and uplifting book, the New York Times bestselling author recounts her personal experience of discovering the power and the beauty of the ancient beads—and shows all of us how to enrich our own lives by exploring and embracing the mysteries, secrets, and promises of the prayer that became her "lifeline to heaven."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Rosary Cantoral: Ritual and Social Design in a Chantbook from Early Renaissance Toledo presents a model for realizing the fuller significance of illuminated music manuscripts as cultural artifacts, and offers unprecedented insights into the social and devotional life of Toledo, Spain, around the turn of the sixteenth century. After solving the mystery of the Rosary Cantoral's origins, subsequent essays probe the meaning and cultural significance of the manuscript's iconography (including a border decoration after Albrecht Durer), its rare Spanish chants for the Mass, and two striking musical works for multiple voices (one by Josquin Desprez and another on "L'homme arme"). Ultimately, this book focuses on the extraordinary circumstances that engendered the compilation of the Rosary Cantoral around 1500: a system of patronage between a brotherhood of suspected heretics and a religious house that was a key supporter of the Inquisition in Toledo."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Mystery of the Rosary

Download or read book The Mystery of the Rosary written by Nathan Mitchell and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rosary has been nearly ubiquitous among Roman Catholics since its first appearance in Europe five centuries ago. Why has this particular devotional object been so resilient, especially in the face of Catholicism's reinvention in the Early Modern, or "Counter-Reformation," Era? Nathan D. Mitchell argues in lyric prose that to understand the rosary's adaptability, it is essential to consider the changes Catholicism itself began to experience in the aftermath of the Reformation. Unlike many other scholars of this period, Mitchell argues that after the Reformation Catholicism actually became less retrenched and more open to change. This innovation was especially evident in the sometimes "subversive" visual representations of sacred subjects and in new ways of perceiving the relation between Catholic devotion and the liturgy's ritual symbols. The rosary played a crucial role not only in how Catholics gave flesh to their faith, but in new ways of constructing their personal and collective identity. Ultimately, Mitchell employs the history of the rosary as a lens through which to better understand early modern Catholic history.
