Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) is one of the most intriguing conflicts of modern history. It has been labeled many things: the first media war, a precursor of the First and Second World Wars, the originator of apartheid. The difference in status and resources between the superpower Great Britain and two insignificant Boer republics in southern Africa was enormous. But, against all expectation, it took the British every effort and a huge sum of money to win the war, not least by unleashing a campaign of systematic terror against the civilian population. In The Boer War, winner of the Netherland's 2013 Libris History Prize and shortlisted for the 2013 AKO Literature Prize, the author brings a completely new perspective to this chapter of South African history, critically examining the involvement of the Netherlands in the war. Furthermore, unlike other accounts, Martin Bossenbroek explores the war primarily through the experiences of three men uniquely active during the bloody conflict. They are Willem Leyds, the Dutch lawyer who was to become South African Republic state secretary and eventual European envoy; Winston Churchill, then a British war reporter; and Deneys Reitz, a young Boer commando. The vivid and engaging experiences of these three men enable a more personal and nuanced story of the war to be told, and at the same time offer a fresh approach to a conflict that shaped the nation state of South Africa.

Book excerpt: The Boer War of 1899-1902 was an epic of heroism and bungling, cunning and barbarism, with an extraordinary cast of characters - including Churchill, Rhodes, Conan Doyle, Smuts, Kipling, Gandhi, Kruger and Kitchener. The war revealed the ineptitude of the British military and unexpectedly exposed the corrupt underside of imperialism in the establishment of the first concentration camps, the shooting of Boer prisoners-of-war and the embezzlement of military supplies by British officers. This acclaimed book provides a complete history of the Boer War - from the first signs of unrest to the eventual peace. In the process, it debunks several of the myths which have grown up around the conflict and explores the deadly legacy it left for southern Africa.

Book excerpt: The Boer War was brutal, racially explosive and catapulted the world into the 20th century, prefiguring the worst excesses of modern conflicts; the indiscriminate bombing of civilians, scorched-earth policies and concentration camps. It was also a civil war, dividing families, communities and races. This book includes material and oral testimony that makes this a reassessment of the war that shaped the destiny of South Africa and, as Rudyard Kipling remarked, taught the mighty British Empire " no end of a lesson" .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boer War This book provides an introductory text to one of the most intriguing wars of modern times-a war that saw several innovations, like the use of heliography and indirect fire, and caused the complete overhaul of the great Imperial British fighting machine in its aftermath. It also tells of the first example of the brilliant use of guerrilla warfare by the people who, to this day, have never been outclassed; the Boer on commando. On the other hand, the Boer War is also an intensely emotional journey cutting to the very core of the horror of war; leaving women and children in a deliberately destroyed landscape, watching their home and all their possessions burn to the ground. Inside you will read about... - The Causes of the War - The Commando System - Phase One - Phase Two - Phase Three - The Concentration Camps - A Gentleman's War And much more! This book sets out to give a broad overview so that the interested reader will be able to find a point of entry to study further. Perhaps more people studying and understanding this subject is the only way to finally know, "When is a war not a war?"

Book From Dolly Gray to Sarie Marais

Download or read book From Dolly Gray to Sarie Marais written by Michael Charles Rice and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, popular opinion about the Boer War underwent a fascinating and telling metamorphosis From Dolly Gray to Sarie Marais gives recognition to a largely unacknowledged but substantial body of popular historical writing over a period of one hundred years that reflects hopes, fears, perceptions and prejudices and memories of ordinary people: popular memory in fiction. The writing about the Boer War in the popular press and fiction provides vivid insights into what ordinary people thought and felt (or were supposed to have thought or felt) about the Anglo-Boer conflict. But more than that, popular culture often gives vivid and interesting insights into the contemporary concerns of writers and their readers of a particular era. In this respect it often maps interesting historical and ideological changes in the South African experience from imperialism through union to the Apartheid era.
