Book excerpt: Excerpt from A True Romance of Rebellion I was lucky enough to get hold of the letter-books and the indexed summary of letters received, covering the period of time, and from my list of approximated dates and subjects I was enabled, by following the thread from page to page, to fix the alphabetical titles and file numbers of the papers we wanted. I soon found all the letters received of 1864, and selected such of them as identified the Government with the bark A1. Two pack ages only were missing from the file, but from the data obtained from our books I was able to procure copies of them at the War Department. Download or read book The Romantic Revolution written by Tim Blanning and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A splendidly pithy and provocative introduction to the culture of Romanticism.”—The Sunday Times “[Tim Blanning is] in a particularly good position to speak of the arrival of Romanticism on the Euorpean scene, and he does so with a verve, a breadth, and an authority that exceed every expectation.”—National Review From the preeminent historian of Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries comes a superb, concise account of a cultural upheaval that still shapes sensibilities today. A rebellion against the rationality of the Enlightenment, Romanticism was a profound shift in expression that altered the arts and ushered in modernity, even as it championed a return to the intuitive and the primitive. Tim Blanning describes its beginnings in Rousseau’s novel La Nouvelle Héloïse, which placed the artistic creator at the center of aesthetic activity, and reveals how Goethe, Goya, Berlioz, and others began experimenting with themes of artistic madness, the role of sex as a psychological force, and the use of dreamlike imagery. Whether unearthing the origins of “sex appeal” or the celebration of accessible storytelling, The Romantic Revolution is a bold and brilliant introduction to an essential time whose influence would far outlast its age. “Anyone with an interest in cultural history will revel in the book’s range and insights. Specialists will savor the anecdotes, casual readers will enjoy the introduction to rich and exciting material. Brilliant artistic output during a time of transformative upheaval never gets old, and this book shows us why.”—The Washington Times “It’s a pleasure to read a relatively concise piece of scholarship of so high a caliber, especially expressed as well as in this fine book.”—Library Journal

Book Collaborative Dubliners

Download or read book Collaborative Dubliners written by Vicki Mahaffey and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enigmatic, vivid, and terse, James Joyce’s Dubliners continues both to puzzle and to compel its readers. This collection of essays by thirty contributors from seven countries presents a revolutionary view of Joyce’s technique and draws out its surprisingly contemporary implications by beginning with a single unusual premise: that meaning in Joyce’s fiction is a product of engaged interaction between two or more people. Meaning is not dispensed by the author; rather, it is actively negotiated between involved and curious readers through the medium of a shared text. Here, pairs of experts on Joyce’s work produce meaning beyond the text by arguing over it, challenging one another through it, and illuminating it with relevant facts about language, history, and culture. The result is not an authoritative interpretation of Joyce’s collection of stories but an animated set of dialogues about Dubliners designed to draw the reader into its lively discussions.

Book Enchanted by the Alien Rebel

Download or read book Enchanted by the Alien Rebel written by Skyla Stone and published by PNK Publishing. This book was released on with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I came here to be a companion. I never meant to be a rebel—or to fall in love with one. Calix Callisto would never have been my first choice for a mate. Despite his looks, he’s young, impetuous, and a little bit superficial. We should never have gotten along. A gymnast back on Earth, I’m everything he’s not—intensely disciplined, coolheaded, and a problem-solver. As it turns out, though, we balanced each other out. We even became…friends. Friends with benefits, no less. And then Ixion devolved into rebellion, and we had to make a run for it. Now I’m no longer bound to him by any program—just the need to help each other survive. And we’re good at that. We’re good at everything together. I want to keep it that way, too—which means no falling in love. Nothing that could eventually break apart our friendship when we realize that this won’t work permanently—and was never meant to, in the first place. There’s danger coming at us from all sides, and we don’t need distractions. Not when Calix is a whole distraction himself. And me? I never wanted to fall in love anyway. Not on Earth, and not on Ixion. Not anywhere. Until we’re separated, and I learn a terrible truth— Sometimes you don’t know what you want until you’ve lost it. Maybe forever. Enchanted by the Alien Rebel is a full-length standalone sci-fi romance featuring a gorgeous alien rebel and the tough-as-nails human companion who find love in the most unlikely of places.
