Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History Spain, Vol. 1 of 3 In presenting these volumes to the public, I am anxious to establish the fact, that the tales contained in them are founded on events admitted as authentic by Spanish historians. With regard to Pelagius, Bernardo, the Cid, and other romantic personages who figure in the earlier portions of the work, neither their existence, nor the principal incidents of their lives, can for a moment be questioned, although some of their extraordinary deeds and adventures may have been subject to controversy. The poetry embodied in many of the tales is uniformly extracted from Mr. Lockhart's most graphic and excellent translation of ancient Spanish ballads; and as it serves to throw a glowing charm over my illustrations of romantic history, the reader, I am confident, will thank me for the liberty I have taken. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History, Vol. 3 of 3: Spain A.d. 1407. John was scarcely two years old, when, by the premature death of his father, Henry the Third, he mounted the throne of Castile. By the late King's will, the Queen and the Infant Don Ferdinand were appointed regents of the kingdom during the minority of John. His mother, who loved him to excess, had been indefatigable in the cultivation of his mind - hence he possessed a degree of erudition, which at that age passed for great learning. John became very fond of letters, and he left several compositions, both in prose and verse, not destitute of merit._but these advantages were attended with a lamentable evil. John, wholly devoted to his favourite pursuit, neglected the study of public affairs, and acquired habits which, however honourable in a private gentleman, were not suitable to a king, especially at that tur bulent age. Hence that incapacity for directing the helm of state, which led to the selection of a person capable of the task and hence, also, the extraordinary favouritism of Don Alvaro de Luna. The unprecedented degree of power to which this individual rose, his eventful life and tragic death, form the most prominent features in the reign of John the Second. The grandees of the land soon cherished a rancorous jealousy against the favourite, whose singular bravery and high capabilities they justly dreaded. From this moment began those internal dissensions which caused so many cala mities in the state. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History: Spain Some difficulty has been experienced in arranging the Historical Summaries. The multiplicity of small independent states into which Spain was divided after the Moorish invasion, rendered an attempt to connect their several histories almost impossible. The direct line of Castilian Kings has been followed, commencing from the Gothic stock of the sovereignty of Asturias, the first Christian state in Spain after the invasion, and the parent Of all the rest. This circumstance, and the necessity of conforming with the plan Observed in the English portion of the Romance of History, have obliged me to discard altogether from my work the annals of Arragon and Navarre, except when they were closely connected with the events which it was my Object to illustrate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Dowry: A Romance As a child 1 had lived at home in a northern town, where it seemed to me that my father worked very hard, and did not make enough money to pay for my mother's frocks - at least, i used to hear some thing like that when my maternal grandmother came to see us. My father and i liked each other very much indeed; my sisters were at school; I never saw much of my mother, and i hated my grand mother. My misfortune came about when I was still a little chap. My father and l were both in a railway accident; he was but slightly hurt, and was taken home to recover; i, with one leg hopelessly injured, was taken to a hospital to lie long in pain. But it was my father who died and I who recovered. He had been dead for some months before they thought fit to tell me, and by that time our relatives had made a division of the family. My mother, with my sisters, went back to her parents' house, and my father's brother offered to adopt me. One day, in the hospital, the nurses put me in a little white room of? The big ward where i had hitherto been. They told me that I was going home. I had been up and about the ward in the afternoons for two or three days, learning to hop on my new crutch; and everybody had so praised my agility and admired my new crutch and new clothes that I felt very fine and perfectly happy. I fell asleep that day in the little white room, and next hearing my grandmother's hated voice, I lay still. I always kept as still as possible when with her, in order not to attract her notice. Book The Spanish Pastoral Romances Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spanish Pastoral Romances Classic Reprint written by Hugo A. Rennert and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Pastoral Romances The first edition of this work was accepted by the faculty of the University of Freiburg i. B. as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1891, and was published in Baltimore in the following year. In its day it was not unfavorably received, and as it has long since been out of print, it has seemed that a new edition might not be unwelcome. In the long period that has intervened the Pastoral Romance never entirely lost for me its old attraction, and as I gradually acquired many of the early editions of these works and re-read them, I determined to re-issue these "primicias de mi corto ingenio," adding such new facts as subsequent researches had brought to light. The result is the present work, which has been almost entirely rewritten, and now appears, as I hope, in a much improved form. I have not seen fit to change, in any material degree, the opinions originally expressed concerning the various romances; repeated reading has convinced me more than ever that the Diana of Montemayor, which was the first, is also the best of these pastorals, while it has increased my admiration for the poetical portions of the Arcadia of Lope de Vega. The Pastoral Romance was essayed by some of the greatest ingenios that Spain has produced, and while many of these poets "had no true vocation for the business," as Professor Fitzmaurice-Kelly says of Cervantes, and, as a consequence, their works are of widely varying degrees of merit, yet they cannot be entirely neglected by the student, for the pastoral is a product of the most flourishing period of Spanish literature, - a literature unsurpassed by any in the modern world. Book Legends Romances of Spain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Legends Romances of Spain Classic Reprint written by Lewis Spence and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends Romances of Spain I have made an earnest endeavour to provide English readers with a conspectus of Spanish romantic literature as expressed in its cantares de gesta, its chivalric novels; its romanceros or ballads, and some of its lighter aspects. The reader will find full accounts and summaries of all the more important works under each of these heads, many of which have never before been described in English. If the perusal of this book leads to the more general study of the noble and useful Castilian tongue on the part of but a handful of those who read it, its making will have been justified. The real brilliance and beauty of these tales lie behind the curtains of a language unknown to most British people, and can only be liberated by the spell of study. This book contains merely the poor shadows and reflected wonders of screened and hidden marvels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Spanish and Portuguese Romances of Chivalry

Download or read book Spanish and Portuguese Romances of Chivalry written by Henry Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish and Portuguese Romances of Chivalry: The Revival of the Romance, of Chivalry in the Spanish, Peninsula, and Its Extension, and Influence Abroad The following chapters represent, in an extended form, a course of six lectures on Spanish and Portuguese romances of chivalry delivered as the Norman MacColl lectures in the University of Cambridge during the Spring of 1917. Their chief object is to provide a comprehensive review of a remarkable popular literary movement which began in the Spanish Peninsula about the turn of the fifteenth century, spread over western Europe, including our own country, and having flourished and exercised a considerable influence for a time, died out so completely as to be well-nigh forgotten nowadays except by students. Various aspects of the movement, and a number of the problems connected with it, have been treated by different writers in modern times; their results have been taken into account, occasionally with corrections, in the following pages, and some new material has been contributed, especially in the later chapters. The early editions of these romances of chivalry, which are in most cases the only existing editions, are extremely rare; but the writer has had facilities for studying or examining the romances, either in Spanish libraries, or in the still richer collections, public or private, in England. The following sketch - the first to relate in connected form the fortunes of these romances in the various countries they invaded - is offered as some return for the advantages enjoyed.
