Book excerpt: As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shadow of the Sheltering Pines: A New Romance of the Storm Country Another winter had lifted its icy fingers from the Storm Country and Lake Cayuga, and an early spring had brought from the south the redbreasted robins and thousands of other birds to build their homes in the Forest City, as Ithaca, New York, is called. No wonder the name had been given to the quiet town of people, for to the south, the east, the west, and even to the north where the lake cut sharply around a corner, broad forests stretched their lengths and heights of leaf and bough on miniature mountains. Download or read book The Drama of the Forests Romance and Adventure Classic Reprint written by Arthur Henry Howard Heming and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drama of the Forests Romance and Adventure So, to make my life-dream come true, to contemplate in all its thrilling action and undying splendour the drama of the forests, I travelled twenty-three times through various parts of the vast northern woods, between Maine and Alaska, and covered thousands upon thousands of miles by canoe, pack train, snowshoes, bateau, dog-train, buck-board, timber-raft, prairie-schooner, lumber-wagon, and alligator. No one trip ever satisfied me, or afforded me the knowledge or the experience I sought, for traversing a Single section of the forest was not une making one's way along a single street of a metropolis and then trying to persuade oneself that one knew all about the city's life. So back again I went at all seasons of the year to encamp in that great timber-land that sweeps from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Thus it has taken me thirty-three years to gather the information this volume contains, and my only hope in writing it is that perhaps others may have had the same day - dream, and that in this book they may find a reliable and satisfactory answer to all their wonderings. But making my dream come true - what delight it gave me! What sport and travel it afforded me! What toil and sweat it caused me! What food and rest it brought me! What charming places it led me through! What interesting people it ranged beside me! What romance it unfolded before me! And into what thrill ing adventures it plunged me! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Trees: And Elsewhere For the general lavishness and prodigality of my passing mood, betrays their lack of discernment, their defect of taste, and their slight acquaintance with myself. I should much prefer that they would leave my woods and fields untrodden, and not disturb my mountain solitudes with their ignorant and vulgar raptures. The people who really know me and love me seek me oftener at other seasons, when I am more at leisure, and can bid them to a more intimate companionship. They come to understand my finer moods and deeper secrets of beauty; the elusive loveliness which I leave behind me to lure on my true friends through the late autumn, they find and follow with the eye and heart of love; the rare and splendid aspects in which I often discover my presence in midwinter they enjoy all the more because I have with drawn myself from the gaze of the crowd; and the first faint touches of colour and soft breathings of life, which announce my return in the early spring, they greet. Book THE TREES

  • Publisher : Knopf

  • ISBN : 0804150990
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book THE TREES written by Conrad Richter and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “They moved along in the bobbing, springy gait of a family that followed the woods as some families follow the sea.” In that first sentence Conrad Richter sets the mood of this magnificent epic of the American wilderness. Toward the close of the eighteenth century the land west of the Alleghenies and north of the Ohio river was an unbroken sea of trees. Beneath them the forest trails were dark, silent, and lonely, brightened only by a few lost beams of sunlight. Here the Lucketts, a wild, woodsfaring family, lived their roaming life, pushing ever westward as the frontier advanced and as new settlements threatened their isolation. Richter has written, not a historical novel, of which there are so many, but a novel of authentic early American life, of which there are so few. It is the primitive story of Worth Luckett, the hunter, and of Jary, his woman; of Genny, Wyitt, Achsa, and Sulie, their woods-wild children; of the bound boy and the Solitary and Jake Tench; but principally of the oldest girl, Sayward Luckett, whos people as far back as she knew had always been hunters and gunsmiths to hunters, but who, through the quiet, growing, and yet tragic oppression of the trees, turns her back at last on her life as a hunter’s child and becomes a tiller of the soil. This novel of great lyrical beauty and high excitement tells the story of the transition of American pioneers from the ways of the wilderness to the ways of civilization. Here is the true American epic. Here is the raw adventure, swift and cruel in its episodes; but here too is the poetry of loneliness. Here is a portrait of frontier life as it really must have seemed to the pioneers. Here in short is a masterpiece by the man who gave us The Sea of Grass.

Book Trees in Prose and Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Trees in Prose and Poetry Classic Reprint written by Gertrude Lincoln Stone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees in Prose and Poetry Trees, in their literary aspect, have as yet found small place in the nature books of to - day; but with the increasing amount of tree study in our common schools there is need of a collection of tree stories and poems. In the compilation of this little book the aim has been to present in the form of a supplementary reader for advanced grades the best litera ture, legendary, historical, and fanciful, that has been inspired by our common trees. Such a book may well have a place in every schoolroom. Where nature study is taught, the selections may be used as supplementary material; where nature study is as yet unattempted, an intelligent study of the selections must inspire the children with a love for the trees and a desire to know them better. There is no result of nature study that does so much to transform well-known scenes as a knowledge of the trees; and an important aid to this larger vision is familiarity with the thoughts of the great writers on these most majestic specimens of the plant world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tree Doctor: A Book on Tree Culture HE Americans are a people who love the beautiful, and yet, strange to say, they have destroyed the trees, which are among the grandest objects of all nature. This, however, has not been intentionally done. The pioneers made war on trees, slaughtered them, burnt them up and got rid of them the easiest and quickest Way they could devise. To a certain extent, this was excusable, as the land was needed for other purposes. Thousands now regret that they did not preserve some of the giants of the native forests. The majestic elm in this photograph is one of them. What would you give to have it in your yard? Our people now deeply deplore the mistakes that have been made, and are spending millions of dollars annually, in the hope of establishing sufficient shade and fruit trees for the requirements of man and beast. In spite of all their noble e 'orts they are meet ing defeat on every hand. The whole trouble is traceable to two oversights. It was my intention, five years ago, to point out these facts and the accompanying evils in a lec ture, by the aid of the stereopticon; but I saw that a thousand persons in that work could not reach the masses in' ten years. Then I thought I would write for some papers, butreadily discovered that but comparatively few people could be reached, and such read ing is not easily preserved. Finally, I determined to put the camera to work. Two authorities might disagree on a certain point, and the public say, They can't both be right; may be both are wrong. When, however, the camera gives you a picture, that is something from which you cannot get away. I had first intended to use fifty photographs, then made it one hundred. Again, finding there was a call for knowledge on the landscape and oral arts, I have used 175 photographs, and could use more to advantage, but cannot for the money. I desire to keep the book at so that it will be within the reach Of all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the Golden Deep: A Romance of the Sierras School was out at the little red school-house, and the wild - voiced children went noisily down the village street, stopping here and there to note the new sights about town since their confinement in school, or to chat in little groups before separating to go home. But the neat little school-mistress sat at her desk with her hands folded, just as she did when the last careless footstep sounded down the stairs, motionless still, and thinking, with a sad, dreamy look in her eyes. Home! What would it be to her to go home! To Sit cosily again with Aunt Robinson and the girls, and John too; to see the Old house with its rough, weather-stained walls, its one bright patch of white wash gleaming through the green trees, - she won dered if even that were there yet; and then the cows, and the lazy Old horses, Tip the dog, and even that around the golden deep.
