Book The Romance of Nice Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Romance of Nice Classic Reprint written by John Douglas Errington Loveland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Nice HE amount of literature which has been written about the Riviera is very large, and it may well seem that there is no adequate necessity for increasing it. But that is a view to which I am unable to subscribe, and I will briefly give my reasons. The twentieth century is a hurrying age, and people require literary fare to be set before them without the trouble of going to look for it. The many notable works on the Riviera which have appeared from time to time written in English, French, and Italian, to say nothing of the classical authors, are most of them unattainable to the general reading public. Many are long out of print, many are too detailed and technical, and many again are out of date and inaccurate. Book The Romance of a Poor Young Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Romance of a Poor Young Man Classic Reprint written by Octave Feuillet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of a Poor Young Man In Monsieur a'e C amom, for example, we have an elaborate study of a man who has determined to live by the succinct principle, Evil, be thou my good - a succinct enough principle, in all conscience, though Feuillet requires a lengthy chapter and a suicide to enunciate it. The idea, if not original, might, in some hands, lend itself to interesting development; but not so in Feuillet's. From the threshold we feel that he is handicapped by his theme. It hangs round his neck like the mill-stone of the adage; it checks his artistic impulses, ob scures his artistic instincts. The quips and cranks. He was a man whose passions often overcame his reason, and, fora time, silenced his conscience; but, though the image of virtue, which Nature had impressed upon his heart, was sometimes obscured by the passing influence of vice, it was never wholly oh literated. With strength of mind sufficient to have withstood temptation, he would have been a good man; as it was, he was always a weak, and sometimes a vicious member of society: . Yet his mind was active, and his imagination Vivid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Book of Romance Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Romance Classic Reprint written by Andrew Lang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Romance IT is to be supposed that children do not read Prefaces these are Bluebeard's rooms, which they are not curious to unlock. A few words may therefore be said about the Romances contained in this book. In the editor's Opinion, romances are only fairy tales grown up. The whole mass of the plot and incident of romance was invented by nobody knows who, nobody knows when, nobody knows where. Almost every people has the Cinderella story, with all sorts Of variations a boy hero in place Of a girl heroine, a beast in place of a fairy godmother, and so on. The Zunis, an agricultural tribe of New Mexico, have a version in which the moral turns out to be against poor Cinderella, who comes to an ill end. The Red Indians have the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, told in a very touching shape, but without the music. On the other hand, the negroes in the States have the Orpheus tale, adapted to plantation life, in a form which is certainly borrowed from Europeans. This version was sent to me some years ago, by Mr. Barnet Phillips, Brooklyn, New York, and I give it here for its curiosity. If the proper names, Jim Orpus and Dicey, had not been given, we might not feel absolutely certain that the story was borrowed. It is a good example of adaptation from the heroic age of Greece to the servile age Of Africans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Shadow of the Purple: A Royal Romance My story is founded on fact, and nearly every incident in it has a historical basis, but I have cut and condensed my annals in places, which I believe (within limit) is an allowed privilege. The one imaginary scene of any importance is the interview in Chapter XXXVIII. I have avoided as much as possible the introduction of private personages whose names are not mentioned in the details of the life of this excellent lady already given to the public, and all my characters are well-known men of the day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romantic The tail of her long, averted stare was conscious of him, of his big, tweed-suited body and its behaviour, squaring and swelling and tightening in its dignity, of its heavy swing to her shoulder as they turned. She could stave off the worst by not looking at him, by looking at other things, impersonal, innocent things: the bright, yellow, sharp-gabled station; the black girders of the bridge; the white signal post beside it holding out a stiff, black-banded arm; the two rails curving there, with the flat, white glitter and sweep of scythes pointed blades coming together, buried in the bend of the cutting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Love or Crown: A Romance Love laughs at locks and bolts and bars and every other kind of obstacle, and so Celia and I were sitting hand-locked on a bit of rock on Moreby Point, watching the waves as they dashed against the cliffs below us, and churned themselves into foam on which the thin April sunlight danced and sparkled brilliantly. There were no bolts, or bars, or locks in our case, but there were plenty of other obstacles, and the fact that we had evaded them made the meeting all the sweeter for the spice of defiance to all our authorities that flavoured it. "There'll be an awful row, Stanley," said Celia, laughing, as she turned her eyes on me. " Mrs. Collingwood will glower and glare at me when I go back, and put on that horrified expression of hers, and promptly write off to Sir Henry. But I don't care," and she laughed rebelliously. "And I'm sure I don't. Try the effect of one of those laughs on her and see what it does. It would kill my anger." "You're a goose," and she pushed her hand further into mine and nestled closer to my side. "I shall get it too. He'll be just mad with me."
