Book Romance of Natural History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Romance of Natural History Classic Reprint written by P. H. Gosse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romance of Natural History If I may venture to point out one subject on which I have bestowed more than usual pains, and which I myself regard with more than com mon interest, it is that of the last chapter in this volume. An amount of evidence is adduced for the existence of the sub-mythic monster popularly known as the sea-serpent, such as has never been brought together before, and such as ought almost to set doubt at rest. But the cloudy un certainty which has invested the very being of this creature; its home on the lone ocean; the fitful way in which it is seen and lost in its vast solitudes; its dimensions, vaguely gigantic; its dragon-like form; and the possibility of its asso ciation with beings considered to be lost in an obsolete antiquity; all these are attributes which render it peculiarly precious to a romantic natu ralist. I hope the statisticians will forgive me if they cannot see it with my spectacles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Romance of Animal Life

Download or read book The Romance of Animal Life written by John George Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Animal Life: Short Chapters in Natural History See, for example, how absolutely dependent man is upon the earth-worm which he heedlessly treads under his feet, or cuts asunder with his spade. As the late Charles Darwin has shown us, man could not have found a place upon the earth had not the worm prepared the way for him. Last created of all beings, he could not have procured food but for the labours of the earth-worm, to which is due the whole of the soil upon which the trees and grasses find root. Is not this physical fact as romantic as any production of the novelist's brain? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Illustrated Natural History for Young People Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illustrated Natural History for Young People Classic Reprint written by John George Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History for Young People Although the number of works on Natural History might deter any new writer from venturing on so extensively handled a subject, there is at present no work of a really popular character in which accuracy of information and system atic arrangement are united with brevity and simplicity of treatment. All the best-known popular works on Natural History are liable to many obice tions, among which may be named a want of correct classification, the absence of explanations of the meanings and derivations of scientific words, the strange inaccuracy of many of the accompanying illustrations, and of the accounts of many animals. Nor do the conventional anecdotes chronicled in their pages evince that personal experience of the animal race which alone can repress romance and prevent inaccuracy. These deficiencies, it is hoped, are at all events partly sup plied in the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Romance of the Earth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Romance of the Earth Classic Reprint written by Alexander William Bickerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of the Earth In calling this little reading book a romance it must not be supposed that facts are ignored. I have used all the facts I found available. Most of the statements are the accepted truths, many of them the commonplaces, of science. Where I could not obtain facts, I have permitted myself to speculate, to make deductions from the accepted laws of nature. When I have thus soared on the wings of the imagi nation I hope the flight has not been unscientific, nor the views presented unsound. When I have used those Wings I have kept well Within sight of the reader; he can see every movement that has led me to these conclusions. Sometimes where no path existed I have not dared to soar; I have merely roughed out tracks that I hope will be straightened and metalled and become paths of progress. Where two opposing schools have suggested opposite ways I have not hesitated to use the clue given me by codified science, and have followed fearlessly where the accepted laws of matter and energy have led me. Book Science Or Romance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Science Or Romance Classic Reprint written by John Gerard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science or Romance? IN the Introduction to his History of England, Dr. Lingard wrote as follows: It is long Since I dis claimed any pretensions to that which has been called the philosophy of history, but might with more propriety be termed the philosophy of romance. Novelists, speculatists, and philosophists, always assume the privilege of being acquainted with the secret motives Of those whose conduct and Character they describe; but writers Of history know nothing more respecting motives than the little which their authorities have disclosed, or the facts necessarily suggest. It seems to be time that a similar canon should be applied to those works which deal with Natural History, and in the following papers a slight attempt in that direction is made, the key-note of them all being a contention that much which is presented to us under this title is Romance rather than Science - philosophism, not philosophy. Book Maine in History and Romance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maine in History and Romance Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maine in History and Romance I am asked to say grace, before this feast of reason and flow of soul. In the writer's request to his Master by Henry Van Dyke is my cautionary grace: Lord, let me never tell a story without a meaning. Make me respect so much my material that I dare not slight my work. Help me to deal very honestly with words and with people because they are both alive. Give me an ideal that will stand the strain of weaving into human stuff, on the loom of the real, and when that is done, help me to say a grateful Amen. The women of Maine in this same spirit salute you, whose stories grace this book. You have that which cannot be taken from you - a gift sent to you as the golden windows come by reflection from above. Cherish your gifts and refresh us again. We thank you; we prize your work; and above all, your efforts. One may know only so much as one lives and the day is his at its best when it is full of serenity and rich in work accomplished with high aims. Treasure the ideals! May faith with understanding keep you and may you so continue, dear friends who have written this charming book, and you, women of Maine who may become its readers, till the twilight comes with its glorious sunset and God's well done. Book The Romance of History England Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Romance of History England Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Henry Neele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History England, Vol. 1 of 3 The following Tales are all founded upon facts in English history. The aid of fiction has, indeed, been made use of, but no important historical event has been falsified; and where the Author has wandered farthest from strict fact, he has yet endeavoured to be true to the spirit and manners of the age in which the scene is laid. It will also be found, that the most marvellous and improbable of the events narrated in these volumes, are by no means the least authentic. "Le vrai," says a French author, "n'est pas toujours le vraisemblable." A few of the Tales refer rather to the history of foreign nations than of England, as "The Rings" does to that of France, and "The Starry Tower" to that of Spain; all, however, have some degree of reference to English history, and if in one or two instances the reader should find this link of conexion a somewhat slight one, it is hoped that the historiette will not, on that account, be condemned, if in other respects it should merit approbation. Book The Romance of Book Selling

Download or read book The Romance of Book Selling written by Frank A. Mumby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Book Selling: A History From the Earliest Times to the Twentieth Century My reason for offering this work is that no one else has attempted to write an adequate history of English bookselling and publishing. Wherever I looked for information on the subject I was faced with regrets that so little had been done to explore this evaded field of research. "No great trade has an obscurer history," says Mr. Birrell in one of his "Selected Essays." "It seems to lie choked in mountains of dust which it would be suicidal to disturb. Men have lived from time to time of literary skill - Dr. Johnson was one of them - who had knowledge, extensive and peculiar, of the traditions and practices of 'the trade, ' as it is proudly styled by its votaries; but nobody has ever thought it worth his while to make record of his knowledge, which perished with him, and is now irrecoverably lost." And I met the familiar saying of Carlyle - that "ten ordinary histories of kings and courtiers were well exchanged against the tenth part of one good History of Booksellers" - so many times that I was ashamed at last to face it again until I had done something to remove the reproach which seemed to lie hidden in his words, since I had myself undertaken a series of "Histories of Kings and Courtiers." Curwen's "History of Booksellers," issued in 1873 and long since out of print, is not, strictly speaking, a history at all, consisting mainly of a collection of articles on the leading publishers and booksellers of his day. Much material lies scattered through Nichols's "Literary Anecdotes of the Eighteenth Century," and Charles Knight has made abundant use of this in his "Shadows of the Old Booksellers," a work which, though pleasantly written, is not always trustworthy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of the Revolution: Being a History of the Personal Adventures But perhaps the fact that we were rebels, aside from the injus tice Of their invasion, may have goaded them on to ferocity. English history shows that that's a name on which the English biestow no sympathy, and for those thus ranked they allow no mercy. Such beings are without the pale of humanity, and are not to be treated with any faith, with whom no Obligations are binding, and to whom no pity is due. With such severity, at least, were the rebel Scots treated on the sanguinary field Of Cul loden. We are all familiar with the atrocities committed on that day; how, by the commands Of the inhuman butcher, the Duke Of Cumberland, the hapless Scots were shot down, bayoneted, and murdered, long after they had surrendered, and even while they were begging for quarter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Story of the Past or the Romance of Science A story of the past From childhood's days I've longed to know The wonders of the past; And as I into manhood grow, I choose my work at last. I then resolved that, come what may, I'd give my brawn and brain From manhood till I'm old and grey, To lengthen out the chain Of life upon the earth we tread Since early dawn of life. Now, I think that I've been led To enter this great strife. As child, on old Otsego's hill I found a limestone ledge That shells of many species fill, Far, far from ocean's edge. And yet they once were living shells, That laved in ocean's brine; They cast on me a wondering spell, When did they live? the time? I ever loved the rocks, and hills With deep green hemlock crowned; I loved to listen to the rills, That gurgling, pleasant sound. Book A Natural History of the Romance Novel

Download or read book A Natural History of the Romance Novel written by Pamela Regis and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The romance novel has the strange distinction of being the most popular but least respected of literary genres. While it remains consistently dominant in bookstores and on best-seller lists, it is also widely dismissed by the critical community. Scholars have alleged that romance novels help create subservient readers, who are largely women, by confining heroines to stories that ignore issues other than love and marriage. Pamela Regis argues that such critical studies fail to take into consideration the personal choice of readers, offer any true definition of the romance novel, or discuss the nature and scope of the genre. Presenting the counterclaim that the romance novel does not enslave women but, on the contrary, is about celebrating freedom and joy, Regis offers a definition that provides critics with an expanded vocabulary for discussing a genre that is both classic and contemporary, sexy and entertaining. Taking the stance that the popular romance novel is a work of literature with a brilliant pedigree, Regis asserts that it is also a very old, stable form. She traces the literary history of the romance novel from canonical works such as Richardson's Pamela through Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Brontë's Jane Eyre, and E. M. Hull's The Sheik, and then turns to more contemporary works such as the novels of Georgette Heyer, Mary Stewart, Janet Dailey, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Nora Roberts.
