Book The Romance of History Spain Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History Spain, Vol. 1 of 3 In presenting these volumes to the public, I am anxious to establish the fact, that the tales contained in them are founded on events admitted as authentic by Spanish historians. With regard to Pelagius, Bernardo, the Cid, and other romantic personages who figure in the earlier portions of the work, neither their existence, nor the principal incidents of their lives, can for a moment be questioned, although some of their extraordinary deeds and adventures may have been subject to controversy. The poetry embodied in many of the tales is uniformly extracted from Mr. Lockhart's most graphic and excellent translation of ancient Spanish ballads; and as it serves to throw a glowing charm over my illustrations of romantic history, the reader, I am confident, will thank me for the liberty I have taken. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History, Vol. 3 of 3: Spain A.d. 1407. John was scarcely two years old, when, by the premature death of his father, Henry the Third, he mounted the throne of Castile. By the late King's will, the Queen and the Infant Don Ferdinand were appointed regents of the kingdom during the minority of John. His mother, who loved him to excess, had been indefatigable in the cultivation of his mind - hence he possessed a degree of erudition, which at that age passed for great learning. John became very fond of letters, and he left several compositions, both in prose and verse, not destitute of merit._but these advantages were attended with a lamentable evil. John, wholly devoted to his favourite pursuit, neglected the study of public affairs, and acquired habits which, however honourable in a private gentleman, were not suitable to a king, especially at that tur bulent age. Hence that incapacity for directing the helm of state, which led to the selection of a person capable of the task and hence, also, the extraordinary favouritism of Don Alvaro de Luna. The unprecedented degree of power to which this individual rose, his eventful life and tragic death, form the most prominent features in the reign of John the Second. The grandees of the land soon cherished a rancorous jealousy against the favourite, whose singular bravery and high capabilities they justly dreaded. From this moment began those internal dissensions which caused so many cala mities in the state. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The multiplicity of small independent states into which Spain was divided after the Moorish invasion, rendered an attempt to connect their several histories almost impossible. The direct line of Castilian Kings has been followed, commencing from the Gothic stock of the sovereignty of Asturias, the first Christian state in Spain after the invasion, and the parent Of all the rest. This circumstance, and the necessity of conforming with the plan Observed in the English portion of the Romance of History, have obliged me to discard altogether from my work the annals of Arragon and Navarre, except when they were closely connected with the events which it was my Object to illustrate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Spaniards, Vol. 1 of 2: A Romance Dark were his brows, and a gloomy to the sight like clouds - His eyes like meteors of the night. Ossian The Duke D'Alcanlery gave a splendid entertainment at his palace in Madrid, on occasion of a public exhibition, to which all the nobility and gentry were invited, in the true spirit of Castilian magnificence and hospitality. Madrid scarcely before had witnesssed so great an assemblage of beauty; and no person of note was absent. The night was beautiful and mild, such as the spring produces when warming into summer, and the gentle airs, that passed over a delightful garden, wafted a thousand perfumes through the gauze lattices which surrounded the large saloon, where the dancers were performing. The brilliance of dress shone amidst a blaze of tapers; and large Venetian mirrors reflected and multiplied the various groups, animated with ever changing motions with a sort of magic elegance; while the lively music of the orchestra awakened joy, and gave birth to pleasure in the coldest heart. In the midst of this festivity a stranger entered, conducting a young lady, whose modesty appeared to shrink from the enquiring gaze of so numerous an assembly. Download or read book The Romance of History England Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Henry Neele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History England, Vol. 1 of 3 The following Tales are all founded upon facts in English history. The aid of fiction has, indeed, been made use of, but no important historical event has been falsified; and where the Author has wandered farthest from strict fact, he has yet endeavoured to be true to the spirit and manners of the age in which the scene is laid. It will also be found, that the most marvellous and improbable of the events narrated in these volumes, are by no means the least authentic. "Le vrai," says a French author, "n'est pas toujours le vraisemblable." A few of the Tales refer rather to the history of foreign nations than of England, as "The Rings" does to that of France, and "The Starry Tower" to that of Spain; all, however, have some degree of reference to English history, and if in one or two instances the reader should find this link of conexion a somewhat slight one, it is hoped that the historiette will not, on that account, be condemned, if in other respects it should merit approbation.
