Book Asymmetric Killing

Download or read book Asymmetric Killing written by Neil C. Renic and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an engaging and historically informed account of the moral challenge of radically asymmetric violence -- warfare conducted by one party in the near-complete absence of physical risk, across the full scope of a conflict zone. What role does physical risk and material threat play in the justifications for killing in war? And crucially, is there a point at which battlefield violence becomes so one-directional as to undermine the moral basis for its use? In order to answers these questions, Asymmetric Killing delves into the morally contested terrain of the warrior ethos and Just War Tradition, locating the historical and contemporary role of reciprocal risk within both. This book also engages two historical episodes of battlefield asymmetry, military sniping and manned aerial bombing. Both modes of violence generated an imbalance of risk between opponents so profound as to call into question their permissibility. These now-resolved controversies will then be contrasted with the UAV-exclusive violence of the United States, robotic killing conducted in the absence of a significant military ground presence in conflict theatres such as Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia. As will be revealed, the radical asymmetry of this latter case is distinct, undermining reciprocal risk at the structural level of war. Beyond its more resolvable tension with the warrior ethos, UAV-exclusive violence represents a fundamental challenge to the very coherence of the moral justifications for killing in war.

Book The Rise and Fall of British Crusader Medievalism c 1825 1945

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of British Crusader Medievalism c 1825 1945 written by Mike Horswell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the uses of crusader medievalism – the memory of the crusades and crusading rhetoric and imagery – in Britain, from Walter Scott’s The Talisman (1825) to the end of the Second World War. It seeks to understand why and when the crusades and crusading were popular, how they fitted with other cultural trends of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, how their use was affected by the turmoil of the First World War and whether they were differently employed in the interwar years and in the 1939-45 conflict. Building on existing studies and contributing the fruits of fresh research, it brings together examples of the uses of the crusades from disparate contexts and integrates them into the story of the rise and fall crusader medievalism in Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Air-Fighting Now that thousands of Americans have enlisted in the Flying Corps, and other thousands are debating in their minds whether or not to follow their example, a few facts concerning the work of British flying men may prove of special interest. When the War began, flying was a side-line; with all its fascination, it appeared to most people to be of minor importance, compared with the traditional tasks of strategy and the problems involved in the employment of vast bodies of men. Is there anybody alive who still holds that view? "Minor importance," and the United States Government building 22,000 aeroplanes and arranging to spend on aviation the enormous sum of between six hundred and seven hundred million dollars! What is the truth of the matter? The flying men will win the War. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Technological Internationalism and World Order

Download or read book Technological Internationalism and World Order written by Waqar H. Zaidi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1920 and 1950, British and US internationalists called for aviation and atomic energy to be taken out of the hands of nation-states, and instead used by international organizations such as the League of Nations and the United Nations. An international air force was to enforce collective security and internationalized civil aviation was to bind the world together through trade and communication. The bomber and the atomic bomb, now associated with death and devastation, were to be instruments of world peace. Drawing on rich archival research and focusing on public and private discourse relating to the control of aviation and atomic energy, Waqar H. Zaidi highlights neglected technological and militaristic strands in twentieth-century liberal internationalism, and transforms our understanding of the place of science and technology in twentieth-century international relations.
