Book The Cambridge Companion to Roman Satire

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Roman Satire written by Kirk Freudenburg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-12 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satire as a distinct genre of writing was first developed by the Romans in the second century BCE. Regarded by them as uniquely 'their own', satire held a special place in the Roman imagination as the one genre that could address the problems of city life from the perspective of a 'real Roman'. In this Cambridge Companion an international team of scholars provides a stimulating introduction to Roman satire's core practitioners and practices, placing them within the contexts of Greco-Roman literary and political history. Besides addressing basic questions of authors, content, and form, the volume looks to the question of what satire 'does' within the world of Greco-Roman social exchanges, and goes on to treat the genre's further development, reception, and translation in Elizabethan England and beyond. Included are studies of the prosimetric, 'Menippean' satires that would become the models of Rabelais, Erasmus, More, and (narrative satire's crowning jewel) Swift.

Book The Roman Satura

Download or read book The Roman Satura written by H. Nettleship and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Satura: Its Original Form in Connection With Its Literary Development The fair inference from the whole passage seems to be twofold. First, that a ea tum differed from a play mainly in having no plot. Secondly, that the satum had in it an element of dialogue. This fact seems to follow by implication both from Livy'e positive statements about the satum and from his omitting to mention the dialogue of Livius' plays as in any way a new factor in the development of the theatrical art. The new element is not the dialogue, but the plot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Roman Audience

Download or read book The Roman Audience written by T. P. Wiseman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were Roman authors writing for? Only a minority of the population was fully literate and books were very expensive, individually hand-written on imported papyrus. So does it follow that great poets and prose authors like Virgil and Livy, Ovid and Petronius, were writing only for the cultured and the privileged? It is this modern consensus that is challenged in this volume. In an ambitious overview of a thousand years of history, from the formation of the city-state of Rome to the establishment of a fully Christian culture, T. P. Wiseman examines the evidence for the oral delivery of 'literature' to mass public audiences. The treatment is chronological, utilizing wherever possible contemporary sources and the close reading of texts. Wiseman sees the history of Roman literature as an integral part of the social and political history of the Roman people, and draws some very unexpected inferences from the evidence that survives. In particular, he emphasizes the significance of the annual series of 'stage games' (ludi scaenici), and reveals the hitherto unexplored common ground of literature, drama, and dance. Direct, accessible, and clearly written, The Roman Audience provides a fundamental reinterpretation of Roman literature as part of the historical experience of the Roman people, making it essential reading for all Latinists and Roman historians.
