Book The Roman Primacy A D 430 451 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Roman Primacy A D 430 451 Classic Reprint written by Luke Rivington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Primacy, A. D. 430-451 In the Council of Ephesus (an. 431) we have actually the first (ecumenical assembly of which the Acts -75.e. The transactions of the various sessions - have come down to posterity. This alone would make it a matter of importance to study the history of that Council with peculiar care. But, further, this Council at Ephesus was concerned with the mystery of the Incarnation in a way peculiar to itself and to the Council of Chalcedon in 451. On these two occasions the Church settled for all time two of the most fundamental points in regard to that mystery of our holy religion, dealing with the union involved in the assumption of our nature by the Eternal Word. Thus in these two Councils we have our first clear sight of the Church in her combined public action on a large scale, and that action was concerned with the funda mental mystery of our holy faith. History here, at any rate, must have a peculiar interest for us Christians. Principles which are found embedded in the Church at this era must have had their origin in times long anterior; their appearance in full ower and fruit points to a distant past to which their roots must be traced. Book The Papacy Revisiting the Debate Between Catholics and Orthodox

Download or read book The Papacy Revisiting the Debate Between Catholics and Orthodox written by Erick Ybarra and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord Jesus Christ intended his kingdom present on earth, the Church of God, to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Prior to the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, history tells of the most egregious division in the Church between the Latin West and Byzantine East in AD 1054 and following. How can it be that Catholics and Orthodox share a thousand years of ecclesial life together in one faith, sacramental order, and hierarchical government, only to have that bond of communion broken? Historians and theologians throughout the years have spilled much ink in recounting the causes and effects of this dreadful and heart-wrenching division, and among the many debates that exist between Catholics and Orthodox, none are as vital to the task of reconciliation as the subject of the papacy. In The Papacy: Revisiting the Debate between Catholics and Orthodox, Erick Ybarra examines sources from the first millennium with a fresh look at how methodology and hermeneutics plays a role in the reading of the same texts. In addition, he conducts a detailed investigation into the most significant points of history in order to show what was clearly accepted by both East and West in their years of ecclesiastical unity. In light of this clear evidence, the reader of The Papacy is free to decide whether contemporary Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy has maintained the heritage of the first millennium on the understanding of the Papal office.

Download or read book The Formation of Hell written by Alan E. Bernstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What becomes of the wicked? Hell—exile from God, subjection to fire, worms, and darkness—for centuries the idea has shaped the dread of malefactors, the solace of victims, and the deterrence of believers. Although we may associate the notion of hell with Christian beliefs, its gradual emergence depended on conflicting notions that pervaded the Mediterranean world more than a millennium before the birth of Christ. Asking just why and how belief in hell arose, Alan E. Bernstein takes us back to those times and offers us a comparative view of the philosophy, poetry, folklore, myth, and theology of that formative age.Bernstein draws on sources from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, and Israel, as well as early Christian writings through Augustine, in order to reconstruct the story of the prophets, priests, poets, and charismatic leaders who fashioned concepts of hell from an array of perspectives on death and justice. The author traces hell's formation through close readings of works including the epics of Homer and Vergil, the satires of Lucian, the dialogues of Plato and Plutarch, the legends of Enoch, the confessions of the Psalms, the prophecies of Isaiah, Ezechiel, and Daniel, and the parables of Jesus. Reenacting lively debates about the nature of hell among the common people and the elites of diverse religious traditions, he provides new insight into the social implications and the psychological consequences of different visions of the afterlife. This superb account of a central image in Western culture will captivate readers interested in history, mythology, literature, psychology, philosophy, and religion.
