When I arrived, I greeted my mother with, “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!” and she said, “Thank you.” I gave her some gifts and a card, and she was very happy and appreciative. After a few minutes, she looked at me and asked, “Who are you?” When I told her I was her daughter, she said, “I didn’t know I had any children.” I told her she had two girls and one boy. She asked where the other two were, and I told her they were always around her somewhere. She then asked, “What is your name?” I said, “My name is Pavah.” She then looked at me very strangely and asked, “Who in the world would give a child a name like that?” Just like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get!

Book Never Giving Up Never Wanting To

Download or read book Never Giving Up Never Wanting To written by Barry Tutor and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most, I knew about Alzheimer’s disease. It causes old people to forget. When my relationship with this disease began, it highlighted how little I knew. Following my widowed mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, I researched this disease to gain insight about my new role as her caregiver and decision maker. What I learned and experienced during her affliction still left me somewhat unprepared for what was yet to come. Sixteen months following my mother’s diagnosis, my dear wife and best friend was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Though now I was familiar with this silent killer, my wife’s diagnosis set into motion many changes and challenges in our lives. Someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s every sixty-eight seconds. Currently, Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top-ten causes of death that is on the increase and has no means of prevention and no possible cure. Given these facts, support for those afflicted relies on increasing levels of caregiving as the disease progresses. Let me explain something about this “old folk’s disease.” Alzheimer’s affects more than just parents and grandparents. It is also the disease of siblings, spouses, and children. Alzheimer’s forces many families to decide between home versus institutional care. An estimated fifteen million caregivers provide some level of care to the Alzheimer’s victims still living at home. No matter what level of care you are providing, the importance of preparation is paramount. Arming yourself with knowledge begins that preparation process. I was unprepared for the roller-coaster ride my life became as the sole caregiver for two Alzheimer’s victims. To meet their varied challenges, I adapted and developed multiple techniques for targeted personalized care. If only I knew then what I know now. By sharing my knowledge and experience, I hope to better prepare you for your caregiving journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garry Willmott will donate ten per cent of all royalties from the sales of both the paperback and e-book to an appropriate charity supporting dementia research. Donations will be distributed to the country where the sales originated from. This story brings life the anguish of those people, young and old, suffering the consequences of Alzheimer's disease. It is a story that illuminates many factual aspects of the nature of this illness while fictionally bringing us into the lives of those transformed by its devastating effects. The author has created sympathetic and credible characters whose plights we share as they confront the ways in which this tragic illness affects not only those directly stricken but also their close relatives and friends. The carefully constructed narrative shows vividly how the disease can strike anyone: Rob, a successful young medical researcher with a promising career; his mother, a respected lawyer with a life of achievement, and all those within their immediate orbit are changed utterly by the onset of this disease. There are many subsidiary contemporary elements introduced by the engaging narrative. Gay relationships, for example, are represented positively and respectfully so that we see gay couples living faithful, loving and socially acceptable lives. The author also implies some of the dangers inherent in placing too much faith in the contemporary (and often exploitative) trent to online relationships. There are tragedies and triumphs in this tight and suspenseful narrative. It is an 'emotional roller-coaster', both poignant and uplifting. It is also a compelling read. Two gentlemen were sharing a house together after both their wives had died; both suffered dementia. One of them, Harry, asked his housemate Frank if he wanted anything up at the shops. "Why would I bother Harry? You'll forget by the time you get out the back door." "No, don't be silly, of course I'll remember. I'm feeling good today." "Ok, do you know those ice-creams that have a chocolate flake sticking out of it?" "Yeah!" "Well I want one of them." "Ok, done." "What did I ask for?" "You want one of those ice-creams that have a chocolate flake sticking out of it." "Seeing you remembered that, I want hundreds and thousands sprinkled over the whole lot. Oh forget it, you'll never remember." "I will, I promise." Harry left the house to walk the one kilometre to the shops; three hours later he returned and plonked a brown paper bag down on the kitchen table. "There's your pie." Frank looked inside the bag. "For god's sake, you forgot the sauce!"

Book One Foot on the Gas and One on the Brake

Download or read book One Foot on the Gas and One on the Brake written by Patti Hareid and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alzheimer's is an equal opportunity disease. No amount of power walking or leafy vegetables or crossword puzzles has proven to prevent it. Just as none of our protests, wishful thinking, or denial keeps it at bay, or changes its trajectory. I'm pretty sure of this because I lost my father to Alzheimer's disease""over and over again. Our family "lived" with the disease for over ten years while my sisters and I did our utmost to accommodate the disease. To lessen its impact on our father who was suffering from the disease, and our mother who preferred not to acknowledge it. There were weeks or months when the disease seemed to plateau and few changes occurred. And then there were weeks when every day revealed some decline""whether subtle or substantial""which we pretty much expected, but for which we were totally unprepared. Knowledge of the disease and its progression was merely academic, and neither comforting nor taken in stride as the disease steadily wreaked its havoc. It's The Process (and yes, it merits capitalization) into which our family was thrust and to which we unwittingly obeyed that I feel compelled to share with others. The Process was a force onto itself that underlay our family trying arrangement after arrangement to protect our parents, respect their wishes, and remain true to ourselves. If I, for one had known from the beginning that doing the right thing for our parents was a process of sound decision-making, information gathering, good intentions, gut instincts, and balancing logic with emotion, I would have suffered far less consternation and self-doubt. Was The Process otherworldly? Or was it the natural outcome of four daughters working together in the best way and for the best reasons to ensure their parents' last years were becoming of the lives they lived? No way to know.

Book Floating in the Deep End How Caregivers Can See Beyond Alzheimer s

Download or read book Floating in the Deep End How Caregivers Can See Beyond Alzheimer s written by Patti Davis and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the heartfelt prose of a loving daughter, Patti Davis provides a life raft for the caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. “For the decade of my father’s illness, I felt as if I was floating in the deep end, tossed by waves, carried by currents, but not drowning,” writes Patti Davis in this searingly honest and deeply moving account of the challenges involved in taking care of someone stricken with Alzheimer’s. When her father, the fortieth president of the United States, announced his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in an address to the American public in 1994, the world had not yet begun speaking about this cruel, mysterious disease. Yet overnight, Ronald Reagan and his immediate family became the face of Alzheimer’s, and Davis, once content to keep her family at arm’s length, quickly moved across the country to be present during “the journey that would take [him] into the sunset of [his] life.” Empowered by all she learned from caring for her father—about the nature of the illness, but also about the loss of a parent—Davis founded a support group for the family members and friends of Alzheimer’s patients. Along with a medically trained cofacilitator, she met with hundreds of exhausted and devastated attendees to talk through their pain and confusion. While Davis was aware that her own circumstances were uniquely fortunate, she knew there were universal truths about dementia, and even surprising gifts to be found in a long goodbye. With Floating in the Deep End, Davis draws on a welter of experiences to provide a singular account of battling Alzheimer’s. Eloquently woven with personal anecdotes and helpful advice tailored specifically for the overlooked caregiver, this essential guide covers every potential stage of the disease from the initial diagnosis through the ultimate passing and beyond. Including such tips as how to keep a loved one hygienic, and careful responses for when they drift to a time gone by, Davis always stresses the emotional milestones that come with slow-burning grief. Along the way, Davis shares how her own fractured family came together. With unflinching candor, she recalls when her mother, Nancy, who for decades could not show her children compassion or vulnerability, suddenly broke down in her arms. Davis also offers tender moments in which her father, a fabled movie star whom she always longed to know better, revealed his true self—always kind, even when he couldn’t recognize his own daughter. An inherently wise work that promises to become a classic, Floating in the Deep End ultimately provides hope to struggling families while elegantly illuminating the fragile human condition.

Book Dementia Sucks

Download or read book Dementia Sucks written by Tracey S. Lawrence and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Not buying it, huh?” My mother acknowledged her assertion that the woman she pointed out at the rehab center as being her dead husband was a bit of a stretch. But this was the kind of conversation I had with Mom as her cognitive abilities declined and her psychosis fully bloomed. The true, heart-wrenching, and yet hilarious stories at the center of Dementia Sucks were borne of a journal and blog that author Tracey Lawrence kept as her mother transformed from classic Jewish mother, to mildly forgetful Floridian grandma, to geriatric delinquent removed by police for knife-play at a rehabilitation facility. Really. Tracey’s journey takes her from being an established graphic artist in northern New Jersey through bouts of full-time, hands-on caregiving of both her aging parents. She discusses many of the common challenges families face, and provides a humorous and highly educational perspective on her emotionally charged ride through geriatric illnesses, doctors, hospitals, insurance, facilities, family dynamics, and much more. Anyone who has family members they care about will want to read this book. Whether dementia visits or not, some aspect of Tracey’s caregiving journey will likely resonate with, amuse, and enlighten you. The trick to surviving loss after loss is to find the humor in it all and avoid punching anyone, least of all yourself. This irreverent look shows you the way.

Book Losing Me While Losing You

Download or read book Losing Me While Losing You written by Jeanette A. Auger and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-21T00:00:00Z with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losing Me, While Losing You is a long-needed resource to those providing care for people living with dementia — and for those providing care to the caregivers. In this book, caregivers speak from their own experiences of caring for loved ones with dementia; they cover when they first noticed behavioural changes, what they did and how their roles changed when they received the diagnosis, how the experiences changed their perceptions of themselves, especially in cases where important ones no longer recognized them or their, often long-standing, relationships. The caregivers also talked about what resources, if any, were available to support them through the caregiving journey and what recommendations they would make to government policymakers and to others in similar situations. This book is unique in that it documents the personal lived experience of loss which family, friends and caregivers go through as their roles, expectations and images of self are changed throughout the caregiving process.
