The introduction of new communication media, which allowed for the mass production and distribution of information and entertainment services, had wide-reaching consequences for social and cultural life: it transformed human cognition; it changed the organization of everyday life; it linked the world more closely together by means of a global media network. Particularly the television medium opened up a new perspective on the world and revolutionized entertainment, and it soon started its triumphant advance throughout the world. The U.S. played a prominent role in the development and global distribution of television technology and programming. America began early to experiment with television technology, but for the time being, it was commercial radio that “quickly grew to become the primary entertainment and information source for Americans throughout the Great Depression and World War II” (Emmert, “Broadcast Media”). At last, television was introduced to the public at the New York World’s Fair in 1939, which had “Tomorrow - Now!” (Campbell et al. 13) as a motto. The public gave the new medium an enthusiastic reception, and soon after World War II, “television's visual images replaced the audio-only limitation of radio as the predominant entertainment and news vehicle” (Emmert, “Broadcast Media”). During the 1940s and 1950s, television technology and broadcasting transmission techniques were further refined: The cable system was rapidly enhanced and soon stretched across the U.S., thereby gradually replacing the transmission by over-the-air broadcasting signals, which is extremely susceptible to interferences. But only the advent of the cost-effective satellite broadcasting technology made the global transmission of mass media services possible: The invention and continuous improvement of satellite communications, computers and computer networks, cable television and fiber optics offer the means of blanketing any part of the world instantaneously with a torrent of imagery and data.

Book excerpt: Hispanics make up approximately 17 percent of the population in the United States, constituting the largest minority group, hence its significance as part of society. After migrating from another country to the United States, Hispanics must adapt to the new culture. The process by which they do this is called adaptation. Research shows that the media significantly influence and aid in the acculturation and adaptation of immigrants to the United States. This study investigates the role that English and Spanish television programming has played in the adaptation process of US Hispanic immigrants. It does this by reviewing pertinent literature and by conducting an in-depth survey with members of the predominantly Hispanic immigrant groups in different parts of the United States. Findings show that Spanish language television (SLTV) helps US Hispanic immigrants stay informed about things happening within the Hispanic community in the United States, provides entertainment that is culturally relevant, offers programming that helps them develop and retain their ethnic identity, helps educate them about very important political issues taking place such as immigration and elections, and often encourages them to take a particular stand or action. SLTV needs to do a better job, however, at providing the necessary tools that can potentially help an immigrant adapt such as tools for language acquisition, information about educational attainment opportunities and employment, and specific information about the adaptation process such as experiences from other immigrants and information about resources available to the community. English language television can be a very useful tool for learning English and other subjects such as US history and culture, topics of national relevance, US politics and the economy, and keep up with current issues and pop culture in the country. However, it does need to portray Hispanics in a more positive and realistic way so that Hispanics can identify more with the content. Although improvements have been made, English language television networks still need to have a better understanding of the Hispanic culture.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that, while watching American television programming may dehumanize and trivialize thought and reason, it can play a significant role in the acculturation of international students because it aids in the creation of an unconscious cultural acceptance. The dissertation reviews the role of television in society and examines the implications of technology from the perspective of the humanities. Further, it overlays issues of culture shock and the acculturation of international students to American university life. It seeks to determine the pros and cons of using television watching as a means of cultural assimilation for international students given media dependency theories and a review of the impact of televisual messages on society. A discussion is included of the impact of technology as a system on society including the two ends of the spectrum of technophilia and technophobia. This serves to create a framework within which television is explored as one medium of technology. The study concludes that there are both advantages and disadvantages to televisual images as a means of acculturation, but that as long as the pendulum does not swing too far in either direction, international students can benefit from vicariously experiencing American culture through television programming in conjunction with authentic experiences with the community in which they have come to live. The purpose of the dissertation is to provide an increased understanding of the need to integrate international students into the academic community, student body and campus life by examining on medium of acculturation, namely televisual immersion.

In these American TV series, African Americans are stereotyped. Given the central role of this medium in most American's lives, it is crucial to understand its potential effects on a variety of social, behavioral, and attitudinal outcomes in American society. The purpose of this book is to explore the stereotypes of African Americans in the American TV series. Motivating our research is the growing need to understand how these TV series influence American society. That American's attitudes toward TV series is more influenced by the past of the racial conflict between African Americans and White Americans, and it is more sophisticated than previously. The book is starting by giving an overview of TV series. In this first part, I introduced the reader to some characteristics that define TV series, then highlight the differences between TV series and other mediums and, in the end, show some of the social impacts of TV series. The second part is entirely about the depiction of African Americans in the American TV series. Moving within this central second part to the first section that examines the stereotypes in the American TV series, which affect the relationship between these African Americans and the rest of America, I tried to answer the 'how they are depicted?' question. The second section of the second main part is dedicated to exploring the social impacts of these stereotypes on African Americans within the American society. The last main part is about the African American TV series. In this part, I answered the question of what are the efforts of these African TV series to correct the distorted image of African Americans using two primary examples of TV series: Julia and the Cosby Show.

Book excerpt: Many teens today who use the Internet are actively involved in participatory cultures—joining online communities (Facebook, message boards, game clans), producing creative work in new forms (digital sampling, modding, fan videomaking, fan fiction), working in teams to complete tasks and develop new knowledge (as in Wikipedia), and shaping the flow of media (as in blogging or podcasting). A growing body of scholarship suggests potential benefits of these activities, including opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, development of skills useful in the modern workplace, and a more empowered conception of citizenship. Some argue that young people pick up these key skills and competencies on their own by interacting with popular culture; but the problems of unequal access, lack of media transparency, and the breakdown of traditional forms of socialization and professional training suggest a role for policy and pedagogical intervention. This report aims to shift the conversation about the "digital divide" from questions about access to technology to questions about access to opportunities for involvement in participatory culture and how to provide all young people with the chance to develop the cultural competencies and social skills needed. Fostering these skills, the authors argue, requires a systemic approach to media education; schools, afterschool programs, and parents all have distinctive roles to play. The John D. and Catherine T.
