Book Pathways to Retirement Through Self Employment

Download or read book Pathways to Retirement Through Self Employment written by Shanthi Ramnath and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the role of self-employment in retirement transitions using a panel of administrative tax data. We find that the hazard of self-employment increases at popular retirement ages associated with Social Security eligibility, particularly for those with greater retirement wealth. Late-career transitions to self-employment are associated with a larger drop in income than similar mid-career transitions. Data from the Health and Retirement Study suggest that hours worked also fall upon switching to self-employment. These results suggest that self-employment at older ages may serve as a "bridge job," allowing workers to gradually reduce hours and earnings along the pathway to retirement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With current policy concerns about shortfalls of labour supply and effects on the social welfare system due to population ageing, there is a need to understand the factors that shape women’s choices about if, when and how to retire. Recent trends indicating the increased workforce participation of women demand new policy responses to the end of careers and retirement transitions to sustain acceptable levels of participation and productivity. This book is innovative in that it will examine constellations of factors that disadvantage or advantage women’s career and retirement trajectories against a backdrop of public policy efforts to extend working lives.

Book Employment Transitions of Older Workers

Download or read book Employment Transitions of Older Workers written by Steve Lissenburgh and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2003-03-19 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of an abrupt and often premature departure from work can leave individuals feeling disoriented and can prevent their valuable economic potential from being tapped. This report, published in association with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, explores the possibilities of more flexible forms of work that bridge the gap between a steady career job and retirement. It examines such jobs in the wider context of the types of transition that are being made by people retiring early and makes recommendations for future retirement policy in the UK.

Book A Balanced Look at Self Employment Transitions Later in Life

Download or read book A Balanced Look at Self Employment Transitions Later in Life written by Kevin E. Cahill and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One partial solution to the strains of an aging society is continued work later in life, and self-employment is one way that some older Americans have chosen to remain in the labor force. The individual and societal benefits of continued work are straightforward: each additional year that retirement is delayed is one additional year of earnings and possible savings and one fewer year that assets are spent down. Further, continued work later in life has been shown to maintain or improve the physical and mental health of older workers. Looking ahead to the increasing effects of societal aging and a challenged labor market, and with the perception of intergenerational job competition, is self-employment a partial solution to both societal aging and a stagnant economy? In this brief article, we document some of the policy issues surrounding transitions into self-employment later in life.

Book excerpt: Why do some professionals thrive when they retire while others struggle and even go into decline? Often we are ill-prepared to make the life-changing transition from full-time employment, whether we leave by choice or not. Our professional work is an important part of our identity, and filling that void and making productive use of our time and skills can be a major challenge. Mike Mister and Rebecca Hill explore alternatives to the traditional "rules" of retirement in this practical guide for busy, mid to later-career professionals making the transition out of large organisational life. Using case studies and insights gleaned from their consulting work, Mister and Hill present a roadmap to reinvent retirement and build a rewarding 'encore' career. Having a purpose is key to professional and personal fulfillment, and the authors show you how to evaluate your options and make informed decisions when it comes to your encore. What motivates and inspires you? What are your lifestyle and financial needs? How can you leave the legacy you desire? The authors include tools and exercises that encourage reflection, help you assess your strengths, and create a personal action plan to make your ideas a reality. Your encore can be the most exciting time of your life. From retraining in a new career path to making an impact by mentoring others or volunteering, a wealth of interesting possibilities awaits you! It's never too early or too late to start! As Chip Conley says in his book Wisdom at Work: "Rewire, don't retire"!

Book The Necessity of Self Employment Towards Retirement

Download or read book The Necessity of Self Employment Towards Retirement written by Jim Been and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates whether individuals at the end of working life choose self-employment out of necessity and to what degree job search requirements for unemployment benefits induce people to become self-employed. For this purpose we analyze labor market transitions for people between the ages of 50 and 63 using a dynamic multinomial logit model with unobserved heterogeneity. The results indicate that at the end of the career individuals with a weak labor market position have a relatively high probability to become self-employed, e.g. to end or avoid a period of unemployment or inactivity (necessity driven self-employment). Contrasting some earlier work, the results do not suggest that self-employment is used as a gradual retirement route for employees. A difference-in-differences analysis shows that job search requirements among unemployed older workers increased the outflow from unemployment and decreased the inflow into unemployment, but did not increase self-employment out of necessity or opportunity.

Book Experiencing the Retirement Transition

Download or read book Experiencing the Retirement Transition written by Tora K. Bikson and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Note reports on a study of a group of men comparable in age and work background and relatively free from financial and health impediments. The study involved them in an exploration of the social and psychological factors in the transition from worker to retiree status. Half of the participants were men who had recently retired, and half were men who, although eligible to do so, had not yet chosen to leave the workplace. The authors report findings on four of the issues identified by the participants themselves: use of time, family and social adjustment, self-construct, and retirement planning processes. Social and psychological issues play a substantial role in the retirement experience. The process can be viewed as a role transition rather than a role loss, though employees, especially those who have invested the most time in the organization, anticipate that the transition will be difficult. The interim findings support the value of bringing individuals on both sides of the retirement transition into contact with each other. Electronic communications technology, made available to half the participants, may contribute to the development and maintenance of social networks that bridge this divide.

Book Self employment in Later Life

Download or read book Self employment in Later Life written by Cal Joseph Halvorsen and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one in five working Americans aged 50 and older are self-employed, yet scholarship that examines the relationships between self-employment and personal health and financial well-being is limited. Using data from six biennial waves of the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally-representative panel study of Americans past 50 years of age, this quasi-experimental dissertation documents the characteristics of self-employed older adults in comparison to wage-and-salary workers, as well as compares self-employed and wage-and-salary workers in later life on a set of financial well-being and personal health outcomes. This study incorporates inverse probability of treatment weighting (also referred to as propensity score weighting) to control for selection into the "treatment" of concern, self-employment. Among older Americans, this dissertation revealed that age, being male, reporting better health, and having higher levels of risk tolerance were predictive of self-employment, among other factors. Further, it found strong evidence that self-employment leads to reduced earnings from work, with some evidence that it increases health and wealth. This dissertation builds upon previous work while contributing to discussions about the causal effects of later-life self-employment, as well as program and policy developments to support longer working lives.

Book Self employment Among Older Workers

Download or read book Self employment Among Older Workers written by Qian Gu and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-employment is an increasingly popular form of employment among older workers. The three papers in this dissertation expand our knowledge base of the self-employment experience at older ages. The first paper documents the largest public and private small business assistance programs in the United States and reviews the evaluation studies conducted on those programs. The second paper finds that workers with a lump-sum distribution option in their pension plans are 27 percent more likely to transition from wage and salary work to self-employment over a two-year period than those without such an option. The third paper compares the employment trajectories of those who are likely using self-employment as a retirement transition with those who are not and identifies the factors that contribute to older workers' survival in self-employment. The analysis indicates that around one-third of self-employed older workers survive six or more years in self-employment and that most of them do not expect to work for longer than six years when they enter self-employment.
