Book Venture Capital and the Corporate Governance of Chinese Listed Companies

Download or read book Venture Capital and the Corporate Governance of Chinese Listed Companies written by Lin Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State-controlled listed companies have always dominated Chinese stock markets. As a result of the rampant scandals related to them, there have been voluminous academic efforts to explore their corporate governance, underpinned by agency costs. However, these studies have yet to examine the phenomenon from the perspective of venture capital and adaptive efficiency. During the last ten years, despite China’s remarkable progress in the development of its venture capital market, its domestic venture capital has been marginalized by American competitors. Given the different performance between them, the author contends that the corporate governance system of Chinese state-controlled listed companies has hampered the performance of the institutional factors which are responsible for the prosperity of American venture capital in Chinese venture capital markets. With the practice of American venture capital as the mirror, he empirically demonstrates that Chinese domestic venture capital lacks the four factors related to the success of their American counterparts: large and independent funding, application of incentive mechanisms, efficient exit channels, and a high risk tolerance level. More importantly, these defects as a whole are closely linked to the corporate governance of state-controlled listed companies. Considering the potential negative consequences on economic and social development, the author identifies policy reforms underway to harmonize agency costs and adaptive efficiency.

You already know that China is the most populated nation on the planet. You already know about the rapid growth of its Internet and the recent development of its technologies. But did you realize that China has... The world's largest number of mobile phone users (500 million) Three times as many engineering students as the United States? You'll meet smart and savvy self-starters like Robin Li, who made his company Baidu in the image of Google. You'll meet inventors and innovators like Liu Yingkui, who developed software for selling goods over cell phones, not PCs. Book excerpt: The Chinese economy is growing at an unprecedented speed, and one of the emerging trends is angel investment. It is an area with tremendous potential for growth. Compared with the more mature markets in Western countries, however, angel investing in China is still at an early stage, due to a lack of incentives and insufficient policy support.By delving into existing literature on China's angel investment and conducting interviews with leading angel investors for China and abroad, Prof. Liu Manhong and Dr Wang Jiani — both scholars on and practitioners in the angel investment market — try to provide readers with a detailed picture of China's angel market: What is going on in the market? How should the government formulate relevant polices? Book China as an Innovation Nation

Download or read book China as an Innovation Nation written by Yu Zhou and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume assesses China's transition to innovation-nation status in terms of social conditions, industry characteristics and economic impacts over the past three decades, also providing insights into future developments. Defining innovation as the process that generates a higher quality, lower cost product than was previously available, the introductory chapter conceptualizes the theory of an innovation nation and the lessons from Japan and Untied States. It outlines the key governance, employment and investment institutions that China must build for such transition to occur, and examines China's challenges and strategies to innovate in the era of global production systems. Two succeeding chapters explain the evolving roles of Chinese state in innovation, and the new landscape of venture capital finance. The remaining chapters provide studies of major industries, which contain analyses of the evolving roles of investment by government agencies and business interests in the process. Included in these studies are traditional industries such as mechanical engineering, railroads, and automobiles; rapidly evolving and internationally highly integrated industries such as information-and-communication-technology (ICT); and newly emerging sectors such as wind and solar energy. Written by leading academics in the field, studies in this volume reveal Chinese innovation as diverse across industries and enterprises and fluid over time. In each sector, we observe continued co-evolution of state policy, market demand, and technology development. The strategies and structures of individual companies and industrial ecosystems are changing rapidly. The sum total of the studies is a great step forward in our understanding of the industrial foundations of China's attempt to become an innovation nation.

Book The new Argonauts in China

Download or read book The new Argonauts in China written by Jing Zhou and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Argonauts are defined as American-educated scientists and engineers who have set up technology companies since returning to their home countries such as China, India, Israel and Taiwan (Saxenian, 2006). This thesis has developed Saxenian's New Argonauts to those who have become venture capitalists (VCs) in China. The aims of the thesis are three-fold: (1) to identify the role of New Argonaut VCs in China's venture capital industry; (2) to examine how New Argonauts use their transnational networks in their portfolio investments; and (3) to assess the impact of their investments on China's economic development. Semi-structured interviews with 33 returnee VCs and 3 returnee business angels were collected to address the above first and second research question. Furthermore, four case studies (two cases were sourced from the semi-structured interviews and two from the secondary data) were employed to address the second and third research question. The use of four cases allows for answering them in much more depth and in greater detail. And as a result, to obtain an insight into the venture capital process used by these New Argonaut VCs and their significant contributions to the effective venture capital industry in China. The findings of case studies further corroborate the proposed relationships tested by 36 in-depth interviews. Transnational networks between New Argonaut investors and the American VC industry and business communities play a vital role, enabling New Argonaut investors to raise funds from the American market successfully, to evaluate the state-of-the-art knowledge of technology, to have co-investment opportunities with foreign VC firms who are unfamiliar with the Chinese market, to create relationships between their portfolio firms and overseas customers, suppliers and strategic partners, and to help their portfolio firms to exit successfully especially in the U.S. equity market. New Argonaut VCs therefore facilitate the rapid economic development in China.

Abstract: Abstract for dissertation entitled Venture Capital in China: Growth and Prospects Submitted by Jason Yin-Wing Tse for the Master of Arts in China Development Studies at the University of Hong Kong June 2005 The role of venture capital has played an important role in many of the developed economies in North America and Europe. It has contributed significant impacts to the development of the high-tech industries and the overall growth of their national economies as well. The Chinese government has been well aware of the importance of venture capital and how it can support the growth and development in areas of science and technology. Therefore, since the mid-1980s, extra attention has been placed in the process of policy making in order to promote the development of the venture capital industry in China. With favorable policies and government support, both the high-tech and venture capital industries in China have experienced tremendous growth over the past decade. This dissertation first examines the historical development of the venture capital industry in China since the mid-1980s and cites all the relevant policies and regulations introduced by the Chinese government in its promotion for the high-tech and venture capital industries. It then looks into some of the unique operational characteristics in the venture capital industry in China and how they are affecting the - ii - overall development of the industry. The immediate section then compares the operational characteristics between foreign and domestic venture capitalists in China by means of case studies. The last section of this dissertation evaluates the facts and figures presented and formulates several improvement recommendations based on the current venture capital market environment and the set of unique characteristics within the industry. The outcomes of the dissertation can provide potential and existing venture capitalists a better understanding on the background and future prospects of the venture capital industry in China. - iii - DOI: 10.5353/th_b3159631 Subjects: Venture capital - China High technology industries - China

Book Entrepreneurship in China

Download or read book Entrepreneurship in China written by Keming Yang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of China as a major world economy is of great importance to the global political economy and to international business. There has been much research on the macro level of institutional reform but little detailed work on the grassroots level of entrepreneurship in China. This innovative book addresses this gap by investigating how an economic system dominated by central plans, communist ideologies and suppressing bureaucracies could generate such energy from the bottom of society, fuelling the country's economic growth. Keming Yang’s theory of entrepreneurship is based on two interrelated concepts: double entrepreneurship and institutional holes. He argues that the two concepts bridge a gap between the neo-classical institutionalism of economic development and entrepreneurship studies that emphasize individual choice. The rigorous theoretical framework is supported by substantial empirical research, offering statistical analyses of survey data as well as detailed case studies. This timely book will appeal to an interdisciplinary readership in sociology, economics, business studies and Chinese and Asian Studies.

Book excerpt: Governments in Greater China (Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore) are striving to create higher valueadded-- and homegrown--products, services, and technologies. This book addresses topics at the heart of these efforts: - What specific actions are Greater China's governments taking to advance their respective competencies? - How do foreign firms bring technologies to them? - How adequate are the pools of talent and how are they changing? - What do patent and publication data tell us about trends in science and technology? - Why are China's research institutes being reorganized? - What has made a small set of hightech regions so productive? The authors, leading scholars and business people from Greater China, the United States, and Europe, offer valuable insights into the region's transition from workshop of the world to wellspring of innovation.
