Download or read book The Southwest Under Stress written by Allen V. Kneese and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southwest Under Stress examines the development-environment conflict in the four contiguous states of Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. It emphasizes three issues with implications that extend far beyond the Southwest: water---its quantity, quality, and allocation; environment---how and to what extent it should be preserved; and the future of Native American and other poverty-stricken peoples. Energy comes in for special attention because the Southwest is a principal repository of fossil and nuclear fuels. This book serves as a guide for public policy in the region, and many of the policy alternatives set out are aimed at state and local governments. Alleviating poverty, improving the lot of Native Americans, and formulating workable water, environmental, and natural resources development policies are all of special concern to the region, but the federal government has asserted a dominant role in may of these areas. The book discusses ways in which the federal role may change to improve both federal policy itself and cooperation with other levels of government.

Download or read book Energy Bio Fuels and Development written by Edmund Amann and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-03-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines the important and topical issue of the economic, social and environmental implications of concerted attempts to diversify energy sources away from fossil fuels. The book expertly examines this issue by focussing on the contrasting experiences of two major economies; one developed, and the other a rapidly expanding, emerging market. Energy, Bio Fuels and Development evaluates the experience of Brazil, with elements of that of the US highlighted for the purpose of comparison. A key area of concern surrounds the causes and consequences of the contrasting routes to biofuel production represented by sugar cane (in Brazil) and corn (in the US). The book also places the recent biofuels drive in perspective by discussing the broader energy policy context. The book shows the complexity and interdependence of the issues involved in moving a society reliant on non-renewable energy sources to one based on alternative sources of energy. The key conclusion to emerge is that Brazil, in pursuing a flexible mix of fossil fuels and bio-fuels, has greatly diminished its exposure to exogenous energy shocks. The US experience – in particular its development of corn-based ethanol – has been more problematic, though by no means without successes. It is argued that bio fuels should not be seen as a panacea. There are clear limits to the efficiency and cost effectiveness of current biofuel production technologies while there remain concerns surrounding potentially adverse effects on food production and rural livelihoods. This book should be an excellent resource for students focussing on economic development, particularly in the areas of energy, biofuels, rural development and food supply.

Download or read book Energy Development in the Southwest written by Walter O. Spofford, Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, the first volume of Energy Development in the Southwest analyses four potential energy development scenarios for the Four Corner states (i.e., Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming) and for the Upper Colorado River Basin, based on alternative national energy scenarios and attempts to assess some of the economic, demographic, and environmental impacts of each development scenario. The energy development scenarios considered in this book involve coal development and use, oil share production, and uranium mining and milling. This title will be of particular interest to students of Environmental Science.
