Book Shaping the U S Army Veterinary Corps

Download or read book Shaping the U S Army Veterinary Corps written by Steven T. Greiner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymmetric threats, such as man-made and natural disasters, agroterrorism, disease pandemics, attacks on the food supply and bioterrorism constitute some of the most serious challenges to U.S. national security in the 21st century. The U.S. Army Veterinary Corps (VC) serves a critical role in protecting military personnel and working animal health as the Department of Defense Executive Agent for Veterinary Services. However, better alignment to the U.S. national security vision through employment of unique and untapped capabilities transforms the VC into a more potent means to counter these asymmetric threats. The VC accomplishes this by aligning its capabilities in a more formal way with other government agencies charged with countering these threats, expanding its role in stability operations support, and regionally aligning its deployable units. Furthermore, building its capacity through training and professional education while enhancing diplomacy through its leadership development ensure a valuable, relevant and reliable VC prepared to counter these 21st century asymmetric threats.

Its chapters outline the history and the diverse duties that make the practice of military veterinary medicine significantly different from the practice of civilian veterinary medicine, yet an integral part of Army medicine. Besides offering readers a comprehensive overview of past veterinary support to the US military, this book also covers the Veterinary Corps’ more modern contributions to US missions, including: support of special operations forces’ tactical canine programs and combat casualty care; food protection and defense; military working dog, horse, mule, and marine mammal programs; global zoonotic disease surveillance and military research and development.

Book Toward the Effective Use of Military Veterinarians in Stability Operations

Download or read book Toward the Effective Use of Military Veterinarians in Stability Operations written by Melinda Moore and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2008 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability operations, a new core mission of the U.S. Army, serve immediate military needs, but these activities can also overlap with the missions of civilian agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development. Among the medical civil-military missions figuring prominently in current operations in the Middle East are requests for technical support from Army veterinarians, DoD's source of expertise for food safety and the prevention and control of animal diseases. This short quick-response study was undertaken to provide guidance for the Army's deliberative planning for the use of such specialists in stability operations. The researchers found that military veterinarians are contributing to economic development in Iraq and Afghanistan and will likely be important to future stability operations elsewhere. Their short-term activities can contribute to larger U.S. and host nation strategic goals, especially if well coordinated with relevant civilian agencies. However, current operations suggest challenges and opportunities to assure that military veterinarians are used appropriately and efficiently and that their activities can meet both immediate military goals and can be sustained within a longer-term development context.

Book Preparing the Army for Stability Operations

Download or read book Preparing the Army for Stability Operations written by Thomas S. Szayna and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004-2006, the U.S. government acted to revise the way that the planning and implementation of Stabilization, Security, Transition, and Reconstruction (SSTR) operations are conducted. The primary emphasis of the changes was on ensuring a common U.S. strategy rather than a collection of individual departmental and agency efforts and on mobilizing and involving all available U.S. government assets in the effort. The proximate reason for the policy shift stems from the exposing of gaps in the U.S. ability to administer Afghanistan and Iraq after the U.S.-led ousters of the Taliban and Ba'athist regimes. But the effort to create U.S. government capabilities to conduct SSTR operations in a more unified and coherent fashion rests on the deeper conviction that, as part of the U.S. strategy to deal with transnational terrorist groups, the United States must have the capabilities to increase the governance capacities of weak states, reduce the drivers of and catalysts to conflict, and assist in peacebuilding at all stages of pre- or post-conflict transformation. According to the Joint Operating Concept for Military Support to SSTR operations, these operations are civilian-led and conducted and coordinated with the involvement of all the available resources of the U.S. government (military and civilian), nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international partners. Although military assets are an essential component of many SSTR operations, specific military goals and objectives are only a portion of the larger SSTR operation.

Book US Military s Experience in Stability Operations 1789 2005

Download or read book US Military s Experience in Stability Operations 1789 2005 written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a brief overview of the US military?s involvement in stability operations and draws out the salient patterns and recurring themes that can be derived from those experiences. It is hoped that a presentation and critical analysis of the historical record will assist today?s Army in its attempts, now well under way, to reassess its long-standing attitudes toward stability operations and the role it should play in them. The US military?s experience in the conduct of stability operations prior to the Global War on Terrorism can be divided chronologically into four periods: the country?s first century (1789-1898); the?Small Wars? experience (1898-1940)7; the Cold War (1945-1990); and the post-Cold War decade (1991-2001). Reference will be made to a group of 28 representative case studies. The list of these case studies can be found at appendix A; synopses of the cases, written by members of the Combat Studies Institute, are located in appendix B.
