Book excerpt: Over the last 40 years, state funding for public higher education has steadily decreased, which has led to increased tuition for students and the need for more external funding. The need for outside funding has placed additional demands on university development offices to seek more support. As development offices are met with greater demands to support the institution, constituents, especially alumni, need to participate at a greater level. At first glance, it seems that alumni who had been highly engaged while students would be the best target for university development staff. This research looks at a group of engaged alumni and their likelihood to participate in philanthropy at the institution. This qualitative research project focused on data gathered about a group of alumni from a midsized, Midwestern public university who received an award recognizing undergraduate engagement and academic achievement. Data collected included survey results discussing both philanthropic intention and engagement verification. The research was extremely revealing. Based on a career in higher education and years of anecdotal data, I once believed that the future of higher education was to engage alumni early and to target specific areas of the undergraduate experience. Through the research, I found that being an engaged student does not necessarily lead to being an engage alumnus. Because this study reflects results of a single qualitative survey, it is important to continue this research with other institutions to find a causal correlation leading to philanthropic engagement. Although the findings of this research showcased the impression of this alumni group, more research needs to be completed to influence the culture of higher education. Similar research at a private university, for example, could potentially yield different findings that could add to or challenge these results. These findings suggest the need to address philanthropy as a higher education funding source in a more sophisticated way.

Practitioners of higher education must respond to this lack of trust and the pressures of preparing a 21st century workforce while battling the threats of a pandemic, declining enrollment, budget destabilization, and increased regulation. The Proper Role of Higher Education in a Democratic Society reexamines the purpose of higher education during rapidly changing times, offers practical advice and best practices to reclaim higher education’s most fundamental mission, and argues that if higher education is called to prepare students to serve a government by the people, the people must be prepared to govern effectively. This book provides resources and suggestions for restoring the public faith in higher education by connecting the educational experience with civic engagement outcomes. Book excerpt: Consistent reductions in state and federal financial support for America's public colleges and universities have resulted in an increased institutional reliance upon non-traditional revenue sources. Budgetary shortfalls precipitated by the loss of appropriations led many institutions to seek out alternative sources of revenue. While many of these strategies have proven to be controversial with institutional stakeholders (e.g., annual tuition rate increases), one appears to be both popular and effective: alumni giving. Colleges and universities rely heavily upon alumni to enhance the institution by subsidizing operational costs; this is especially crucial in times of great financial stress. In order to ensure strong, lifelong relationships between alumni donors and their alma maters, institutions must consistently evaluate the methods through which alumni giving is solicited. It is not enough to merely expect alumni to become philanthropically engaged upon graduation; institutions must create a culture of giving amongst its student body. The study explored how colleges and universities may foster increased alumni participation in institutional philanthropy. By gauging the perceptions of young alumni, institutions will be able to determine if existing efforts are effective in encouraging future alumni giving. Grounded in altruistic (i.e., prosocial), social exchange, student development, and donor motivation theories, this study utilized a quantitative survey methodology to uncover prevailing alumni perceptions toward contemporary institutional philanthropic efforts. Study participants were asked to reflect upon their undergraduate experiences and the relationships they maintain with their alma mater after graduation. The study found that specific variables (e.g., alumni association membership, gender, financial contributions, engagement in alumni activities, satisfaction with the undergraduate experience, and institutional connectivity post-graduation) were statistically significant in predicting membership within three distinct donor groups. After all data were collected and analyzed, recommendations were made to assist institutions in developing programs that are most likely to encourage active alumni participation and create a culture of giving amongst student bodies.
