Book The Treatment of the Trumpet in Selected Jazz influenced Classical Chamber Works of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Treatment of the Trumpet in Selected Jazz influenced Classical Chamber Works of the Twentieth Century written by Kathleen E. Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trumpet has always maintained a central role in the jazz genre. However, throughout the history of chamber music the trumpet was overlooked until the mid-twentieth century when brass chamber music and mixed chamber ensembles rose to popularity. An infiltration of the popular American style, jazz, into classical chamber music changed composers' treatment of the trumpet. This thesis focuses on the role and treatment of the trumpet in selected jazz-influenced classical chamber works in order to highlight that the trumpet's prominence in jazz helped to establish its place in twentieth-century chamber music. A brief history of classical brass chamber music and the origins and development of jazz is given. Trumpet performance techniques and compositional practices idiomatic to the different jazz style periods, ranging from ragtime to cool jazz, are given. These techniques are then traced through selected chamber music works of Stravinsky, Martinù, Schuller, Babbitt, and Wilson. Selected works were chosen based on the degree of jazz influence and are representations of the jazz style period they emulate. A comparison of how classical composers in Europe and the United States viewed the trumpet in jazz, in regards to chamber music, is detailed over the course of the twentieth century.

Book The Trumpet Music of Eric Nathan

Download or read book The Trumpet Music of Eric Nathan written by David Wharton and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to explore the trumpet works of composer Eric Nathan in terms of their technical and notational elements. This analysis develops an understanding of the musical vocabulary and techniques that will provide insight into the structure, style, and performance of this repertoire and in doing so to discover a historical perspective of the trumpet's role within solo and chamber music genres in the 21st century. Through this analysis, I suggest that Nathan's music pushed the technical, and therefore expressive boundaries of the instrument. While not exhaustive, the analysis of Cantus, Four Sculptures, and Toying will provide a good representative sample of Nathan's compositional approach towards music for trumpet. Developments in new music notation through the twentieth century will be examined along with a survey of how these developments are reflected in literature for the trumpet. Ultimately, this thesis considers how the convergence of notation and literature was key for the trumpet to secure a position as a solo instrument within the scope of western music practices. Nathan's music is the lens to undertake this exploration.

Book Twenty first Century Music that Embodies a Positive Relationship Between Trumpet and Piano

Download or read book Twenty first Century Music that Embodies a Positive Relationship Between Trumpet and Piano written by Benjamin Alan Bruflat and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript emphasizes the importance of new music by arguing that it exposes both audiences and musicians to learn and understand new ideas, that it challenges musicians to rethink how they program performances and utilize technological advancements, and that it artistically and financially supports a large and diverse population of current composers. The next section of the manuscript discusses chamber music and the responsibilities of the musicians. Ultimately, musicians in a chamber setting are of equal importance and must learn each other's music as well as their own in order to effectively communicate through various body languages during a performance. Improving this skill is possible through the attendance of concert performances and through studying recorded performances, but there is no substitute for learning through experience. The final section of the manuscript analyzes the music selected for the recording project through interviews with the composers of each piece. It also utilizes interviews conducted with the pianists who worked on each piece to discuss any unique aspects of the music from their perspective as collaborators in different stages of their careers. The recording/editing process is also discussed as there are challenges involving microphone setup, audio balance, and editing various recordings together that were unique based on the pieces being recorded.

Book An Annotated Collection of Twentieth Century Wind Band Excerpts for Trumpet

Download or read book An Annotated Collection of Twentieth Century Wind Band Excerpts for Trumpet written by Carly Jo Lynn Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this document is to provide an annotated collection of excerpts, in the area of trumpet performance, from wind band repertoire of the twentieth century. The study emphasizes the analysis and preparation of selected excerpts by trumpet players for both audition and performance purposes. The study provides background information, musical analysis, practical performance suggestions, and a select discography on excerpts taken from twenty-two significant compositions from the wind band repertoire. The scope of the selected repertoire has been narrowed to works written specifically for the large wind band medium and that have demonstrated a significant relevance to the continued development of the wind band medium in the United States. The excerpts included in this study were selected primarily from solo and first cornet and trumpet parts taken from advanced repertoire. This project employs a historical background, with an emphasis on works from the second half of the twentieth century. A determining factor of the repertoire selected for review and inclusion in this project is that the works were composed originally for wind bands comprised of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Thus, chamber works were not included in this range of consideration, nor were marches or orchestral transcriptions. In addition, solo pieces with winds and percussion serving an accompaniment role also were not included in the scope of this project.

Book Brass Chamber Music in Lyceum and Chautauqua

Download or read book Brass Chamber Music in Lyceum and Chautauqua written by Raymond David Burkhart and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of brass chamber music in lyceum and chautauqua fills a lacuna in brass history. It explores the forgotten phenomenon of the many chamber brass ensembles that entertained millions of Americans from coast to coast from 1877 to 1939 and presents histories of sixty-one ensembles that performed music for brass trio, brass quartet, brass quintet, and brass sextet for lyceum and chautauqua audiences. The author also writes about the large repertoire of music for small brass ensembles that he discovered was published in America from 1875 through the 1920s. This First American Chamber Brass School is discussed in one of five overviews of the principal eras in brass chamber music history that form the most comprehensive history of brass chamber music written in fifty years.
