Book A Study on the School Board Member and Superintendent Relationship and Its Perceived Impact on a School District

Download or read book A Study on the School Board Member and Superintendent Relationship and Its Perceived Impact on a School District written by Hani Joseph Youssef and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to gain information and knowledge regarding the perceived impact the relationship between the superintendent and school board members had on a school district. This study also explored which characteristics school board members and superintendents believe are essential to effective school board member and superintendent relationships. This quantitative study utilized survey research methods. Participants answered four demographic questions and 35 primary questions that addressed components of the research questions that frame this study. Questionnaire items were answered on a Likert-type scale that indicated the participants' level of satisfaction (items 1-25) with the school board member and superintendent relationship and level of importance (items 26-35) related to essential characteristics of effective school board member and superintendent relationships. Survey methodology was appropriate for this particular study because the aim of the study was to investigate the perceived relationship between two defined stakeholder groups, school board members and superintendents, and those groups' perceptions of how that relationship impacts educational accountability, the instructional program, leadership roles, board-superintendent conflicts, teamwork, and school-community relations. Participants were selected from the state of California database system that includes contact information for school board members and superintendents within the state. The researcher had access to participants because he secured the support from the California School Board Association (CSBA) Board of Directors. The CSBA Board of Directors allowed the researcher to use their comprehensive e-mail database to contact superintendents and school board members within the state of California. In order to keep the random sample sizes as large as possible, invitations to participate were sent to 250 superintendents and 350 school board members in the CSBA database system

Book School Board Presidents Perceptions of the Superintendent Selection Process

Download or read book School Board Presidents Perceptions of the Superintendent Selection Process written by Robert A. Rasmussen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: School districts face enormous challenges with recent reductions in fiscal resources due to cuts in California's state budget and an average tenure for a school superintendent of only 3 years. School boards are challenged to find a leader who can address the needs of the school district during these difficult times. As numerous school superintendents are retiring, and a new generation of educators is applying for key positions in educational leadership, it is important to better understand the perceptions of school board presidents who have experience in selecting a school superintendent. This study explored the perceptions of the superintendent selection process of five participating school board presidents. The participants in this study shared their perceptions of the superintendent search process and selection criteria, perceptions on the most important leadership characteristics desired in a superintendent, and perceptions in the standards used to measure leadership in the candidates selected as superintendent. The findings revealed several components of the selection process that will serve school boards in evaluating the best strategy for them in conducting the superintendent search. When school boards embark on the process of selecting a superintendent, their actions become very public and ultimately reflect on how they view community involvement and input into on-going district leadership. As a result, a well-defined plan of action will reflect well on the school board, build community trust, and set the stage for a positive transition to new leadership at the superintendent level. The assertion that selecting a superintendent may very well be the school board's most important duty of action, it is imperative that such a process be articulated and integrated within the scope of district need and community involvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of positive board/superintendent relationships cannot be understated. The need to balance competing political pressures to create the best possible learning opportunities for students is ever present. Most importantly, board/superintendent relationships should be cultivated with openness and transparency among each other and the public. This book is a resource for both board members and superintendents, and explores issues related to the board/superintendent relationship and superintendent hiring practices. The book includes contributions from experienced and new superintendents and board members on a wide range of topics that boards and superintendents must navigate together successfully in order to move districts in a positive direction for students, staff, parents, and communities. This book is unique in that the intended audience is both boards and superintendents. It is not a resource wherein “experts” tell board members how they should conduct board business, nor a resource that informs superintendents how to “manage” school boards. Instead, the book promotes and encourages a productive working relationship and partnership that moves school districts forward in a positive manner.

Book excerpt: There are over 15,000 superintendents leading school districts across the United States today. Yet, despite the high visibility and prestige of the position, what superintendents actually do, on a day-to-day basis, remains mysterious to the layman and even to those in the profession. This book, authored by eight California superintendents, is a narrative telling their stories_from the professional side as well as the personal. It traces their beginnings as teachers, follows their moves into administration, and looks at the skills that they use to communicate, analyze, and succeed.

Book Perceived Challenges and Factors that Influence Inhibit and Contribute to the on the Job Success of Black Superintendents in California School Districts

Download or read book Perceived Challenges and Factors that Influence Inhibit and Contribute to the on the Job Success of Black Superintendents in California School Districts written by Allen L. Dosty (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public school superintendent is undoubtedly a difficult position to fulfill. It is becoming more challenging each year (Goodman & Zimmerman, 2000). While the demographics of students of color continue to rise, the numbers of Superintendents of color have not increased at the same rate. Specifically, the number of Black Superintendents has fluctuated over the past decade, reaching as low as 13 in the state of California (Ellerby, 2002). In order to better understand this phenomenon and to remedy it, this study examined the barriers and challenges faced by Black Superintendents in California. In particular, the study explored how race and other factors are embedded in the barriers and challenges facing superintendents in these positions. The present study is a qualitative exploratory case study design. It reflects the diverse thoughts, experiences, and perspectives of the school superintendents in the state of California. The principal goal of this study is to obtain an emic (an inside) perspective of sitting Black superintendents in California about the barriers and challenges facing them in this role. Open-ended interviews are the main data source for this study. They are utilized to explore the challenges encountered in by these superintendents. Black superintendents in this study juggled their personal and professional lives as they struggled to successfully do their job and to be accepted as equals in their profession. The findings contribute to the body of knowledge concerning Black superintendents, in what has appeared to be a White male--dominated role. They also provide a richer understanding of the context within which Black superintendents work. These findings suggest further study and ways that may improve access to and retention of Black superintendents. Furthermore, this study suggests the need for shining much more light on these issues of providing support for racial equity and diversity in the role of the school district superintendent in California and the nation.
