Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past two decades the United States has been transforming distressed public housing communities, with three ambitious goals: replace distressed developments with healthy mixed-income communities; help residents relocate to affordable housing, often in the private market; and empower former public housing families toward economic self-sufficiency. The transformation has focused on deconcentrating poverty, but not on the underlying role of racial segregation in creating these distressed communities. In Public Housing and the Legacy of Segregation, scholars and public housing officials assess whether--and how--public housing policies can simultaneously address the problems of poverty and race.

Book excerpt: What is a decent home? Does it simply provide shelter from the elements? Is it affordable enough that you can buy the other necessities of life? Does it connect you to a community with adequate social and economic resources? Noted housing expert Alan Mallach turns his decades of experience to these questions in "A Decent Home". Mallach's nuanced analysis of housing issues critical to communities across the country will help planners evaluate the housing situation in their own communities and formulate specific plans to address a variety of housing problems. The book is both a practical step-by-step guide to developing affordable housing and a sophisticated introduction to housing policy. Chapters address design, site selection, project approval, financing, and the history of housing policy in the United States. Planners will find useful information about inclusionary and exclusionary zoning, affordable housing preservation, and the risks and rewards of affordable-home-ownership programs. Mallach also connects the dots among regional economic competitiveness, quality of life, community revitalization, and affordable housing.

Book Access to Opportunity and Locational Equity in the Low income Housing Tax Credit Program

Download or read book Access to Opportunity and Locational Equity in the Low income Housing Tax Credit Program written by Nicholas Efthimiadis and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a severe shortage of affordable housing in the United States. The main funding source for the construction and preservation of affordable housing is through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program. Researchers have focused on the intersection of housing and access to opportunity, noting the socio-economic and health benefits associated with proximity to opportunity. This begs the question: are limited affordable housing dollars spent in ways that produce optimal outcomes for low-income residents? This study uses federal housing data and HUD AFFH access to opportunity indices to establish if for-profit and non-profit developers in the Seattle Metropolitan Area locate their developments in areas with high levels of access to opportunity. The findings indicate that developers face a tradeoff between good access to transit and environmental health and that their mission may play a role in the site selection process.
