Book excerpt: This paper offers both a theoretical framework and empirical evidence on the role that the two gravity forces, namely market size and geographical distance, have indirectly through imports, on firms' exports patterns. The model shows that sourcing from bigger and closer markets implies higher productivity gains that, in turn, increase firms' ability to enter export market as well as their export value. Exploiting data on product- and destination-level transactions of a large panel of Italian firms, the paper shows that, on average, the indirect effects of the gravity forces are about one third of their direct effects. Cet article offre à la fois un cadre théorique et des preuves empiriques sur le rôle que deux forces de gravité, à savoir la taille du marché et l'éloignement géographique, peuvent indirectement exercer sur les profils d'exportation des entreprise en fonction de leurs importations. Ce modèle montre que l'approvisionnement sur des marchés plus vastes et plus proches engendre de meilleurs gains de productivité, augmentant ainsi la capacité des entreprises à intégrer le marché d'exportation ainsi que la valeur de leurs exportations. En s'appuyant sur des données provenant d'un large panel d'entreprises italiennes et relatives aux transactions par type de produit et par destination, cet article montre qu'en moyenne, les effets indirects des forces de gravité représentent environ un tiers de leurs effets directs.

Book excerpt: The gravity equation in international trade is one of the most robust empirical finding in economics: bilateral trade between two countries is proportional to size, measured by GDP, and inversely proportional to the geographic distance between them. While the role of size is well understood, the role of distance remains a mystery. I propose the first explanation for the gravity equation in international trade, based on the emergence of a stable network of input-output linkages between firms. Over time, a firm acquires more suppliers and customers, which tend to be further away. I show that if, as observed empirically, (i) the distribution of firm sizes is well approximated by Zipf's law and (ii) larger firms export over longer distances on average, then aggregate trade is inversely proportional to distance. Data on firm level, sectoral, and aggregate trade support further predictions of the model.

Book excerpt: We present a gravity model that accounts for multilateral resistance, firm heterogeneity and country-selection into trade, while accommodating asymmetries in trade flows. A new equation for the proportion of exporting firms takes a gravity form, such that the extensive margin is also affected by multilateral resistance. We develop Taylor approximated multilateral resistance terms with which to capture the comparative static effects of changes in trade costs. For isolated bilateral changes in trade frictions, multilateral resistance effects are small for most countries. However, if all countries reduce their trade frictions, the impact of multilateral resistance is so strong that bilateral trade falls in most cases, despite the larger trade elasticities implied by firm heterogeneity. As a consequence, the world-wide trade response, though positive, is much lower.

This work has been inspired in part by two apparently quite different but actually related contemporary trends: on the one hand, an emergence or revitalization of clusters of activities co-located in or around selected global city regions or fast growing metropolitan areas; and on the other hand, an increased global dispersion of activities conducted within the value chains managed or coordinated by many large multinational enterprises and their business partners. The former trend has given rise to discussions of how the elite of the cultural-cognitive economy of the 21st century (in Allen Scott's terminology) or the creative class (Richard Florida's term) are now being drawn or brought back to major urban centers; while the latter trend is associated with debates over outsourcing, and the economic and social consequences of shifts in the ownership and location of distinct nodes of value chains once production systems become more fragmented and the component parts of such systems become more geographically dispersed.
