Book The Role of the Dean in the Public Comprehensive Community College

Download or read book The Role of the Dean in the Public Comprehensive Community College written by Diane J. Colvin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Deans in U.S. public community colleges hold an important, challenging, and little understood leadership position. Within an institution, the academic division dean is the administrator with the most direct influence over the academic unit. Little data can be found on the specific nature of the roles, tasks, competencies, challenges, and strategies related to the position. The lack of empirical research on the role supports a need for this study. The purpose for conducting this study was to understand the unique role of the dean in the public community college context. A proportional stratified random sample was drawn from the 7 Carnegie Classifications of public 2-year institutions to ensure a representative nationwide sample. The survey instrument was adapted from one created by the Maricopa Community College National Community College Chair Academy and the Study of Higher Education and Post Secondary Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The results of the study indicated that the respondents perceived all 14 roles as important in their position, including planner motivator, and advocate. Of the 32 tasks, 20 were considered important, including communicate unit needs to upper administration, create a positive environment, and develop long-term plans. All 12 competencies were viewed as important, including judgment, organization, and decisiveness. Of the 34 challenges, 29 were identified as important, including maintaining program quality, maintaining high quality faculty, and strengthening the curriculum. Respondents agreed that 23 of the 25 strategies were useful to some degree, including long-range institutional planning, integrating budget and planning, and conducting curriculum reviews. Finally, the results showed that there was no difference in how deans viewed the dimensions of their role across the Carnegie categories. The results of this study may provide useful data to community college leaders and hiring committees by identifying the roles and competencies perceived as necessary to succeed in this position. In addition, the results of this study may be useful to educational leadership programs by providing information about the responsibilities of the position and the strategies current practitioners view as effective.

Book Community College Academic Deans

Download or read book Community College Academic Deans written by Christopher A. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academic dean is a middle manager leader with multiple roles in community and technical colleges. This dean has the dual responsibility of guiding the direction of the academic program for faculty at the college and handling the daily tasks of administration. The deans' control over their roles was examined through their ability to influence situations with different leadership styles. Balancing the roles and daily contacts with students, staff, faculty and other administrators creates stress if the demands of the job are beyond the personal control of the dean. Executive stress costs educational organizations time and money. Through extensive study of leadership and organizations, Bolman and Deal (1984) found that the use of four leadership orientations (structural human relations, political and symbolic) can give leaders increased control over tasks and events.

Book Confessions of a Community College Administrator

Download or read book Confessions of a Community College Administrator written by Matthew Reed and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Matthew Reed, the formerly anonymous author of Inside Higher Ed's most popular blog, Confessions of a Community College Dean, this book offers keen insights, a frank discussion, and suggested solutions for the many issues that are unique to community college administration. In Confessions of a Community College Administrator Reed describes the current landscape of community college leadership and addresses some of the fundamental questions that face community colleges. Who does a community college actually serve? How do administrators really make budget decisions? Where do the roots of the "permanent crisis" in higher education lie? How are full-time and adjunct faculty best balanced? Throughout the book, Reed offers guidance and encouragement for the next generation of community college leaders. He examines a set of proposed solutions from outside academia, then turns to other solutions emerging from inside the community college world that also show potential for success. Confessions of a Community College Administrator is filled with realistic, and ultimately hopeful, advice on how to step back from the day-to-day administrative struggles and gain some perspective on the larger picture. Reed offers administrators useful and productive directions for constructive change.

Book Shared Vision

Download or read book Shared Vision written by John E. Roueche and published by Community College Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a study of 256 exemplary community college presidents, this book examines the attributes of outstanding leaders and their ability to orchestrate organizational change. Chapter 1 provides the background for the study, emphasizes the importance of leadership, and identifies attributes common to transformational leaders; that is, leaders who work with their followers so that each raises the other to higher levels of motivation and morality. Chapter 2 summarizes leadership theory and offers a discussion of transformational leadership and its place in a rapidly changing society. After chapter 3 reviews the study methodology, chapters 4 and 5 present findings on the demographic and leadership characteristics of the presidents selected for in-depth study. Chapters 6 through 10 discuss key elements of transformational leadership, including shared vision, teamwork and collaborative decision making, institutional climate and the relationship between the institution and the individuals within it, motivation as a means of achieving followers' acceptance of the shared vision, and personal values, integrity, and commitment to learning. Chapter 11 examines women in community college leadership roles. Finally, chapter 12 presents a summary of the research, a discussion of the problems faced by minority leaders, and a review of study implications. The survey instruments and an 85-item bibliography are appended. (ALB)
