The Chorus with his announcements, explanations, apologies, and appeals to the audience, while itself not being part of the diegetic world, underscores the assumption that the Chorus, represented by one single character, functions as a presenter of the play in general and of each act in particular with the rather practical aim to lead the audience through several changes of time and scene: "Carry them [the kings] here and there, jumping o’er times" (1.29). But understanding that as a reason or even as a justification for the existence of the Chorus in Henry V, the question has to be raised why a chorus, which is after all rarely used in Shakespeare’s other plays, is used specifically in this play. There are numerous Shakespearean plays in which a unifying authority would have been highly useful because of a complex structure of the particular play in regard to time and setting such as in Macbeth, King Lear, or The Merchant of Venice, to mention just a few.

Introduction “Normans, but bastard Normans, Norman bastards!” (Shakespeare, Arden 3.5.10) This exclamation of the Duke of Britain when he thinks of the English invader King Henry and his approaching army is a testimony of the cordial dislike of the French towards their English enemy. Within Henry V there are many more instances of the French being prejudiced against the English but also vice versa. However, the quotation above does not only contain a token of the French aversion against their opponent in the Hundred Years War – the setting of this history play by William Shakespeare – but also alludes to the fact that the two nations are somehow interwoven – a circumstance that will be dealt with later on. Within this paper on Shakespeare’s Henry V, I will take a closer look at the ways in which the two nations describe themselves and are described by others, as well as at the textual evidence that sheds light on some of the national prejudices that the English and the French have against each other. Finally, I will search for those points in the play that indicate a sort of closeness between the two parties. Concerning the choice of words, it has to be mentioned that, for the sake of simplicity, the terms England and the corresponding adjective English shall be synonymous with the totality of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, the four peoples that are fighting together under King Henry against the French.

At times he is a cheerleader or a spin doctor, emphasizing the glory of war, playing on the audience's patriotism, and explaining potentially negative events like Henry's execution of the traitors in a positive light. His repeated apologies for the inadequacies of the performance further bolster the notion that the play is an epic, arguing that the medium rather than the subject matter is responsible for any flaws. When the ensuing action immediately contradicts his reading of a situation, however, the Chorus' presence undermines the heroic and glorious elements, calling the myth of Henry V's triumph into question. How and at what point the audience loses faith in the Chorus becomes a crucial decision in any production. A predominantly ironic version relies on the audience's awareness of the Chorus' misapprehensions, while an epic one would do well to minimize their impact. I will be considering various productions, both epic and ironic, in order to assess the sometimes domino-like effect a small change in the interpretation of the Chorus has on the play.
