This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of a series of studies on vocational education and training, this review focuses on the vocational education and training (VET) in Sweden and concludes with policy recommendations. Over recent years, Sweden has launched a series of reforms to enhance involvement of social partners in VET, to increase provision of work-based learning in VET programmes and to promote apprenticeship. Higher vocational education and training launched in 2002 has been expanding. At the same time, numerous sectors are grappling with labour shortages increasing pressure on VET to better match the provision to changing demand for skills; and fewer young people opt for VET programmes than in the past. This report suggests several ways in which the Swedish VET system may respond to these challenges. Sweden may encourage co-operation between schools, for example by linking it to school evaluation and funding criteria. The report also argues that Sweden may further enhance social partners' involvement in VET by creating a framework for systematic social partners' involvement at the local level and by providing social partners with more responsibility over some aspects of VET.

Book Vocational Education and Training in Sweden

Download or read book Vocational Education and Training in Sweden written by Kenneth Abrahamsson and published by Development of Vocational Training. This book was released on 1999 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than a distinct vocational education and training (VET) system, Swedish institutions include VET as part of an educational philosophy stressing equity, integration, and comprehensiveness. The VET system forms part of a comprehensive model of education stressing active citizenship, work life orientation, and preparation for further studies. The radical reform of the upper secondary system in 1991 resulted in decentralization, new curricula, and more individual choice. Measures taken to develop a more integrated system at the upper secondary level include extension of all programs to 3 years and application of a core curriculum approach to both academic and vocational programs. Of the 16 nationally determined programs, 14 are primarily vocational and 2 are focused on preparation for university. Important institutions at the adult and higher education level include vocational programs in municipal adult education, employment training, in-company training, and staff development. Trade unions have their own extensive education programs. The VET system is overwhelmingly publicly run and financed, with very few private providers of training. At the upper secondary level, national tests determine the achievement of quality standards. However, there is no formal system such as tests, diplomas, or national qualifications to recognize the acquisition of vocational skills and competencies. Among current trends influencing the VET system in Sweden are new developments in work and society that form a new context for policy implementation. These new developments include the following: the growth of unemployment, changing skill requirements, a new intercultural context, the challenge of lifelong learning, and deskilling and upgrading. (Four appendixes contain the following: acronyms and abbreviations, addresses of 20 major organizations, 81 resources and references, and a glossary.) (KC)

Book Vocational Education in the Nordic Countries

Download or read book Vocational Education in the Nordic Countries written by Svein Michelsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocational Education in the Nordic Countries: The Historical Evolution is the first of two books that disseminate new and systematic knowledge on the strengths and weaknesses of the different models of vocational education and training (VET) in four Nordic countries. Vocational education in Europe has resisted standardisation to a higher degree than other fields of education, and during the last decade, there has been a growth in international, comparative VET research. While the Nordic countries provide an ideal case for comparative education studies, the literature in English on the Nordic VET systems is at present very limited. This first book provides thorough examinations of VET in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland over 150 years. Each section examines the historical evolution of VET at upper secondary level in one of the four Nordic countries. Contributors also analyse how each country have tried to reform their respective VET systems, and compare the paths which each nation has taken. The book explores what can be learned from the diversity of the VET-systems in the Nordic countries, which otherwise have many similarities and share a common heritage in education policy. This volume will help strengthen the knowledge base required for transnational policy learning, and for developing vocational education internationally for the future. It will be of interest to researchers, academics and postgraduate students involved in the study of vocational education, educational studies and educational policy, education planners and teachers educators.

Book Neoliberalism and Market Forces in Education

Download or read book Neoliberalism and Market Forces in Education written by Magnus Dahlstedt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism and Market Forces in Education provides a wide perspective on the dramatic transformation of education policy in Sweden that has taken place during the last 30 years, with a specific focus on marketization. The marketization of education in Sweden is set in the wider international context of changes in education systems. With contributions from researchers across a wide range of scientific disciplines, the book provides examples of the consequences of market orientation in education in terms of increase in inequality as well as in terms of what the market orientation means for principals, teachers and students. It considers how Sweden has developed one of the most marketized education systems in the world and the possible consequences of such processes, as identified by research. Neoliberalism and Market Forces in Education will be of great interest to educational practitioners, politicians, scholars in the field, and postgraduate and research students in education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocational Education in the Nordic Countries: Learning from Diversity is the second of two books that disseminates new and systematic knowledge on the strengths and weaknesses of the different models of vocational education and training (VET) in four Nordic countries. This book provides thorough examinations of VET in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. Each section examines the current challenges for VET, compares how these challenges are managed, and explores recent reforms and institutional innovations. Contributors also analyse institutions and policies at the national level and include comparative studies of two occupations at the micro-level in the four countries. The book explores what can be learned from the diversity of the VET systems in the Nordic countries, which otherwise have many similarities and share a common heritage in education policy. This volume will help strengthen the knowledge base required for transnational policy learning, and for developing vocational education internationally for the future. Book Vocational Education and Training in Sweden

Download or read book Vocational Education and Training in Sweden written by Colin Turner and published by Hyperion Books. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The context for education in Sweden is for a society in which citizens enjoy economic well-being and social provision. The educational system consists of a grundskol and an integrated upper school combining the gymnasium, vocational school, and the professional school preparing students for subuniversity qualifications. Nineteen higher education institutions are being created. Provision for adult education, which is free, takes many forms. A bill has been implemented that provides for vocational orientation and preparation for the world of work through work experience for all grade levels. Problems of vocational orientation include noninvolvement of teachers, little integration of the work experience into the classroom, insufficient work placements, and disagreements as to the main purpose of work experience. Local school boards are responsible for educating all young people under 18 and may run centers for unemployed youth. These characteristics distinguish the Swedish educational system: education as part of a coherent, planned social strategy to build the ideal society; equality of education for each citizen; emphasis on personal development; relationship with the labor market and economic structure of the country; and centralization. Future developments include decentralization of activities from the National Board of Education and changes in upper secondary education. (YLB)
