Book excerpt: The current study examined the stress-buffering effect of social support on the relations between stress from daily hassles and psychological adjustment. Daily hassles have been associated with various indicators of maladjustment including anxiety and depression. Previous research has identified the stress-buffering effect of social support such that perceived social support moderates the relations between experiencing stress and negative outcomes. This has been established for various forms of stress but has not been extensively explored for daily hassles. This study analyzed the potential moderating effect of social support from parents, teachers, and classmates on the association between perceived daily hassles and symptoms of anxiety and depression within a high-school population. The examination found that daily hassle stress was significantly associated with anxiety and depression. For anxiety, no sources of support moderated the relation between stress and internalizing symptoms. When analyzing depression, only classmate support buffered the relation between daily hassle stress and depression.

Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) ATTRACT This study examined the relationship between negative life events and psychological, distress and the moderating influences of positive life events, social support and attributional style in this relationship. One hundred and eleven first year university students served as subjects. Instruments used in this study were the Life Experiences Survey, Interpersonal Support Evaluation List, Attributional Style Questionnaire, and General Health Questionnaire. Negative life events were found to significantly correlate with psychological distress. A stress-buffering effect of positive life events was found. Independent and stress-buffering effects of social support were also found. Furthermore, the self-esteem type of support was identified to be responsible for the interactive effects of social support. A significant correlation between negative life events and psychological distress was also found among subjects who explained negative outcomes in terras of internal, stable, and global factors, or, Negative (I-S-G), but not among those who explained negative outcomes in terms of external, unstable, and specific factors, or. Negative (E-U-S). Finally, the buffering effects of positive life events and social support were greater in those Negative (I-S-G) than in those Negative (E-U-S).

Book excerpt: Research consistently shows a negative association between socioeconomic status (SES) and depression. Equally well-established is the contribution of social support to positive outcomes. Though the intersection of these constructs has been empirically examined, their interrelations remain unclear. The goal of this dissertation was to contribute to research on socioeconomic status (SES) and social support in college students. Conditional process analysis (i.e., moderated mediation) was used to explore: 1) whether perceived social support mediates the relation between network diversity and depression; and 2) whether family affluence, subjective social class, and first-generation status moderate the relation between both types of social support and depression. As hypothesized, perceived support and network diversity were negatively correlated with depressive symptoms, and SES indicators (with the exception of generation status) were positively correlated with depressive symptoms. Contrary to hypotheses, network diversity had a positive direct effect on depression. However, the results did suggest that network diversity has a negative indirect effect on depression via perceived support. Though the SES indicators correlated with depressive symptoms, they were not found to directly affect depression in the regression models. Additionally, the SES indicators did not moderate the relation between perceived support and depression or between network diversity and depression. Based on this pattern of results, it was concluded that network diversity, a type of structural support, may not be unequivocally beneficial, as is often assumed in research. Therefore, it is suggested that future studies include measures of the quality of social relationships as mediators between measures of structural support and mental health outcomes. With regard to the nonsignificant effects of SES and lack of moderation between social support and SES, it was proposed that college students may be protected from some of the stressful aspects of being of low SES. The difficulty in designing robust, generalizable research on SES and social support is also discussed. In an effort to establish consistency in the literature on these important constructs, future researchers should be intentional about how they operationalize and measure SES and social support.

Traditional Danish Proverb This bit of Danish folk wisdom expresses an idea underlying much of the current thinking about social support. While the clinical literature has for a long time recognized the deleterious effects of unwholesome social relationships, only more recently has the focus broadened to include the positive side of social interaction, those interpersonal ties that are desired, rewarding, and protective. This book contains theoretical and research contributions by a group of scholars who are charting this side of the social spectrum. Evidence is increasing that maladaptive ways of thinking and behaving occur disproportionately among people with few social supports. Rather than sapping self-reliance, strong ties with others particularly family members seem to encourage it. Reliance on others and self-reliance are not only compatible but complementary to one another. While the mechanism by which an intimate relationship is protective has yet to be worked out, the following factors seem to be involved: intimacy, social integration through shared concerns, reassurance of worth, the opportunity to be nurtured by others, a sense of reliable alliance, and guidance. The major advance that is taking place in the literature on social support is that reliance is being -placed less on anecdotal and clinical evidence and more on empirical inquiry. The chapters of this book reflect this important development and identify the frontiers that are currently being explored.

Abstract: Work-family conflict is a type of interrole conflict in which psychological stress arises when demands from work domain interfere with one's capability to carry out responsibilities associated with family. Social support, on the other hand, is commonly regarded as a valuable coping resource that can alleviate job stress. In the past few decades, different models have been proposed to understand the role of work-family dynamics in the workplace. However, some of these models are mutually exclusive. While some studies found that either positive or negative experience from one domain will spill to the other domain, a different stream of research found that the negative experience from one domain can be compensated by the positive experience from another domain. In an attempt to understand the underlying mechanism of work-family conflict, a moderated-mediation model was proposed. The model encompasses the indicators, the consequences, and the moderators into the study of work-family conflict. More importantly, the model puts forward the importance of a situational fit between the source of stress and the type of social support being offered (Study 1). It also emphasizes the significance of relationship closeness in affecting the effectiveness of social support (Study 2). Adopting the Job Demand-Resources model, Study 1 attempted to test the contextual variability of social support. In particular, the buffering role of two types of domain-specific support, namely the coworker support and family support, were tested in the work context. The results showed that there is a domain difference of the effectiveness of social support. The moderating effect of within-domain social support was stronger than the cross-domain social support. Coworker support was found to buffer against the linkage between job demands and psychosomatic symptoms, whereas family support was found to strengthen the lethal impact of the same relationship. Based on a sample with two time points of 18- to 20-month interval, Study 2 further tested the impact of relationship closeness on social support. Work-family conflict was found to be a mediator between the linkage of job demands and psychological well-being. A main effect was shown for both coworker support and family support in which the both types of social support from Time 1 significantly predicted Time 2 work-family conflict reported by participants. Peer support was found to be a negative buffer in the moderated mediation model in which a higher level of peer support was shown to intensify the negative relationship of job demands on psychological well-being through work-family conflict. The findings from the current research challenge the perspectivethat views social support as favorable at all times. In particular, the proposed model showed that receiving social support in a right context, or social support from significant others will be beneficial to employees' psychological well-being, whereas social support from non-significant others in a misfit context will be hazardous.
