Book excerpt: The effects of using personal networks have in recent years become a topic of interest in the research area that focuses on the internationalization process of the firm. Few studies have, however, used the concept of social capital when studying the internationalization process of high-tech SMEs. In this explorative case study, ten Swedish SMEs in the biotech business have been examined in order to see how they use social capital for accessing the critical resources that they need in their internationalization process. The results of the study indicate that the usefulness of social capital changes during this process and that the wrong perception of social capital's usefulness can lead to unsuccessful internationalization.

Book excerpt: Previous studies on family-SME internationalization have largely focused on what resources are needed to drive an incremental process rather than how resource management occurs in historical time. This paper focuses on the latter, adopting a social capital perspective (capturing both internal, i.e. among family-SME board members, and external, cross border agent dyads, relations) in order to decipher case study data from the East of England. Findings show that it is not the presence or absence of organizational-social-capital that affects family-SME internationalization success but rather its variable use over the years driven by the future pursuit of longevity, not growth. Key within this context is the variable use of the international expertise and management capability of non-family managers in the family SME intra-organizational context. Ultimately this may lead to change and learning that occurs erratically, often including reversals, without causing family-SME progression across a sequence of incremental stages.

Book excerpt: As family small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly becoming active in international markets, sometimes with rapid speed, there is a growing research interest in their internationalisation. Such interest is especially strong in a small economy, such as New Zealand (NZ), where collaboration in relationships is crucial to bridge the geographical distance from other markets and improve its foreign involvement. Yet, the internationalisation of family SMEs in NZ is not adequately understood. This thesis aims to better understand the internationalisation of family SMEs by studying six NZ family SMEs' post-entry strategies using a case study methodology. In doing so, it uses social capital theory to examine the role and influence of resources embedded within and derived from relationships on the post-entry internationalisation process of family firms. In particular, this study explores the effect of internal and external social capital on family SMEs' post-entry internationalisation strategies. Such an investigation addresses a shortcoming of family SMEs' internationalisation research and improves our understanding of their foreign operations' further development. This thesis reports that family SMEs utilise internal resources and capabilities instead of external social capital to strategically pursue post-entry entrepreneurial opportunities, demonstrating their socioemotional wealth (SEW) in the post-entry internationalisation process. Thus, the theoretical dimensions of entrepreneurial behavior, resource capabilities, and strategic involvement are displayed in family SMEs' development of post-entry operations. This thesis also identifies the importance of strong, informal relationships instead of weak, formal relationships to collect bonding and bridging social capital as a driver for rapid internationalisation in the post-entry process.

Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.

Debt is concentrated at the short end of the maturity spectrum and denominated in foreign currency, exposing countries to maturity and currency risk. Capital markets in Latin America look particularly underdeveloped when considering the many efforts undertaken to improve the macroeconomic environment and to reform the institutions believed to foster capital market development. The disappointing performance has made conventional policy recommendations questionable, at best. 'Emerging Capital Markets and Globalization' analyzes where we stand and where we are heading on capital market development. First, it takes stock of the state and evolution of Latin American capital markets and related reforms over time and relative to other countries.
