When we designed the outline of this new book, we thought that it should include as many different points of view as possible, although in an integrated general scheme. Allelopathy can be viewed from different of perspectives, ranging from the molecular to the ecosystem level, and including molecular biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, plant ecophysiology and ecology, with information coming also from the organic chemistry, soil sciences, microbiology and many other scientific disciplines. This book was designed to include a complete perspective of allelopathic process. The book is divided into seven major sections. The first chapter explores the international development of allelopathy as a science and next section deals with methodological aspects and it explores potential limitations of actual research. Third section is devoted to physiological aspects of allelopathy. Different specialists wrote about photosynthesis, cell cycle, detoxification processes, abiotic and biotic stress, plant secondary metabolites and respiration related to allelopathy. Chapters 13 through 16 are collectively devoted to various aspects of plant ecophysiology on a variety of levels: microorganisms, soil system and weed germination. Fundamental ecology approaches using both experimental observations and theoretical analysis of allelopathy are described in chapters 16 and 17. Those chapters deal with the possible evolutionary forces that have shaped particular strategies. In the section named “allelopathy in different environments”, authors primarily center on marine, aquatic, forest and agro ecosystems. Last section includes chapters addressing application of the knowledge of allelopathy.

Knowledge has accumulated on the mecha nisms of the microbial infection of plants, which can lead to either disease or resistance. The mechanisms developed by plants to interact with microbes, whether viruses, bacteria, or fungi, involve events that can lead to symbiotic association or to disease or tumor formation. Cell death caused by pathogen infection has been of great interest for many years because of its association with plant resistance. There appear to be two types of plant cell death associated with pathogen infection, a rapid hypersensitive cell death localized at the site of infection during an incompatible interaction between a resistant plant and an avirulent pathogen, and a slow, normosensitive plant cell death that spreads beyond the site of infection during some compatible interactions involving a susceptible plant and a virulent, necrogenic pathogen. Plants possess a number of defense mechanisms against infection, such as (i) production of phytoalexin, (ii) formation of hydrolases, (iii) accumulation of hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein and lignin deposition, (iv) production of pathogen-related proteins, (v) produc tion of oligosaccharides, jasmonic acid, and various other phenolic substances, and (vi) production of toxin-metabolizing enzymes. Based on these observations, insertion of a single suitable gene in a particular plant has yielded promising results in imparting resistance against specific infection or disease. It appears that a signal received after microbe infection triggers different signal transduction pathways.

Book excerpt: Chemical warfare between plants and their herbivores and pathogens was first brought to our attention by the publication 25 years ago of the paper by Fraenkel in Science. There, he pointed out that most plants have similar nutritional characteristics so that the selection of plants by insect herbivores must depend on the relative toxicity of secondary compounds. This led, rather gradually, to a host of papers on plant-herbivore interactions. More or less at the same time, insect physiologists and ecologists were starting to realise the importance of chemical communi cation systems in determining sexual and other characteristics of insect behaviour. Nine years ago the Phytochemical Society of North America published their Symposium on 'Biochemical Interaction Between Plants and Insects' in which the plant apparency theory was expounded by both Paul Feeny and Rex Cates and David Rhoades. This stated that plants which are apparent usually contain secondary components which reduce digestibility (tannins and lignins) while ephemeral plants have more toxic, and perhaps less costly, compounds such as alkaloids. These papers stimulated much research on biochemical ecology. The recognition of the importance of the biochemical factors in such interactions is not just of scientific interest. It is vitally important in programs for the production of new varieties of cultivated plants, especially in tropical countries where about one-third or more of the crops are lost to predation or disease.

Book excerpt: Allelopathy, secondary metabolite-mediated plant-to-plant interaction, is gaining application in current agricultural science as well as in invasion ecology. The present study addresses the major knowledge gaps in this field by investigating (i) how the bioavailability of allelochemicals is altered when they are present in a mixture in the soil matrix and (ii) what are the cues and consequences of allelochemical production in nutrient acquisition by the plant. The role of preferential sorption to soil in altering the chemical composition of plant exudates was studied in a silt loam soil using representative mixtures of plant phenolic acids, namely, hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, coumaric acid, and ferulic acid. The concentration-dependent sorption coefficient (Kd) of hydroxybenzoic acid was decreased more by than 90% in the presence of coumaric acid. About 95% of sorbed vanillic acid was displaced into the soil solution in the presence of ferulic acid. Soil organic matter was associated with preferential sorption. The results demonstrate that preferential sorption of phenolic acids to soil can alter the availability of plant exudates in mixtures and thus may mediate their phytotoxic effects. To understand the dynamics of allelochemical mixture in soil matrix, using Centaurea maculosa Lam.as a model source, we investigated how the bioavailability of complex allelochemical mixtures is modified in a soil-microbial system. C. maculosa litter decomposition experiment revealed the existence of allelochemical in complex mixture in soil matrix. We observed the prolonged persistence of allelochemicals in soil matrix when present in complex mixtures. Also, allelochemicals exhibited dynamic nature undergoing simultaneous degradation as well as synthesis. We investigated allelopathy as a corollary effect of resource acquisition mechanism using Centaurea. diffusa Lam. as a model system. The exudation of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) by C. diffusa was not correlated with any of the tested nutrient stresses; however the 8HQ production remained steady under prolonged Fe stress, indicating this as a specific plant response to Fe stress. 8HQ showed high specificity in extracting Fe from both invaded and non-invaded soils. C. diffusa was able to uptake Fe from Fe(OH)3, but addition of carbon resulted in Fe deficiency, indicating a direct role of 8HQ in Fe uptake by this plant. Related (C. maculosa, C. solistitialis) as well as non related species (Zea mays) of C. diffusa were able to uptake Fe from Fe-hydroxyquinoline complex (FeQ). Combining the above with the root reductase activity of the species, we propose that FeQ because of its hydrophobic nature, could passively diffuse across plasma membrane. In bioassay studies the addition of Fe decreases the toxicity of 8HQ, suggesting the phytotoxic action of 8HQ is via chelation of cellular Fe. In conclusion, the present study revealed the competitive sorption phenomenon of plant secondary metabolites in soil matrix, as well as their dynamic nature. Combining the results from these studies that, 8HQ not only mobilizes the nutrients from soil, but also these nutrient complexes can be taken up by plants, we report an additional role of 8HQ in increasing the competitive ability of this weed - by facilitating the resource acquisition. Also, we report for the first time, the possible existence of a phytosiderophore-like mechanism for Fe acquisition in non-graminaceous species.

Book excerpt: “Die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der höherer Pflanzen – Allelopathie” by Gerhard Grümmer appeared in 1955. It was a remarkable and unique summary of a science, that had received little attention, but which was to captivate the attention of plant ecologists decades later. While Hans Molisch was credited for coining “allelopathy” (in German) in 1937, his monograph dealt primarily with the effects of ethylene. It was Gerhard Grümmer, a young academic at Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University, Greifswald, who marshalled the existing world literature on the chemical interactions of plants into the world's first coherent textbook on allelopathy. Grümmer, however, worked in East Germany, at a time when the “iron curtain” was descending, and his book on allelopathy remained little known outside Germany. In 1957, the book was translated into Russian, which helped advance subsequent allelopathic studies in the U.S.S.R. In the English-speaking world, the first comprehensive mono-graph on allelopathy is considered to be “Allelopathy” by E.L. Rice, published in 1974, and revised in 1984. While Molisch's heralded book has been both reprinted, and translated into English, Grümmer's meritorious volume has been sadly overlooked, and to this day still provides important insights into many allelopathic problems, in particular root excretions, pollen allelopathy, and chemical interactions in mistletoes. For these reasons, an English trans-lation of “Die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der höherer Pflanzen – Allelopathie” is long overdue, and it is hoped that its publication will assist ecologists in their research and consolidate Grümmer's position as a founding figure in the development of allelopathy as a science.
