Book Transatlantic Science and Technology

Download or read book Transatlantic Science and Technology written by Sabine E. Herlitschka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major societal challenges of a global nature include climate change, efficient energy supply, environmental sustainability, and health care. Science & Technology Policy (S&T) policy is an essential contributor to dealing with these challenges; moreover, international cooperation and collaboration in S&T is vital to tackling these issues, since no single nation or even region is able to respond adequately by itself. Within this context, this book addresses recent developments in transatlantic S&T cooperation between the European Union and the United States. The EU-U.S. relationship dates back to the 1950s, with regular EU-U.S. Summits to assess and develop transatlantic cooperation. In the area of S&T, the EU and U.S. concluded an S&T Cooperation Agreement in 1998, renewed it in 2004, and extended it for another five years in July 2009. The research underlying this study is based on interviews with key stakeholders in the field, with an emphasis on: • potential new opportunities and new mechanisms for increased transatlantic EU – U.S. S&T cooperation under current conditions • examples of coordinated “science diplomacy” efforts • options for the development of effective joint efforts. While the project is focused on European-U.S. relationships, it also addresses issues of international S&T cooperation involving other regions, including Africa and Asia. The author highlights the urgency of S&T cooperation to address global issues, and the evolving roles of government, universities and research centers, and industry, in promoting successful strategies and programs.

Book The Economics of Science and Technology

Download or read book The Economics of Science and Technology written by M.P. Feldman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and technology have long been regarded as important determinants of economic growth. Edwin Mansfield (1971, pp. 1- 2), a pioneer in the economics of technological change, noted: Technological change is an important, if not the most important, factor responsible for economic growth . . . without question, [it] is one of the most important determinants of the shape and evolution of the American economy. Science and technology are even more important in the "new economy," with its greater emphasis on the role of intellectual property and knowledge transfer. Therefore, it is unfortunate that most individuals rarely have the opportunity to explore the economic implications of science and technology. As a result, the antecedents and consequences of technological change are poorly understood by many in the general public. This lack of understanding is reflected in a recent survey conducted by the National Science Board (2000), summarized in Science & Engineering Indicators. ' As shown in Table 1. 1, the findings of the survey indicated that many Americans, despite a high level of interests in such matters, are not as well-informed about technological issues as they are about other policy issues. As shown in the table, individuals self assess, based on a scale from 1 to 100, their interest in science and technology policy issues as being relatively high, yet they self assess their knowledge or informedness about these issues relatively lower.

Download or read book Science Technology and the Economic Future written by Susan Ueber Raymond and published by . This book was released on 1999-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological change creates both challenges and opportunities for global economic competitiveness and for the continued enhancement of societal welfare. The challenges and opportunities are complex; neither will be easily met. In this book a distinguished group of government, corporate, and university leaders explores the tangle of policy dilemmas, domestic and international, which confront a technology-intense world. The authors begin by exploring the formulation of technology policy in such areas as national security, defense and cryptography. They examine environmental issues ranging from emissions standards and the future of the electric vehicle to world population projections. They discuss ways of spurring growth in America's research-intensive industries, including a look at integrating the military and civilian technology base. Finally, they address such global issues as trade negotiations, financial services, and recent developments in Russian and China.
