Book excerpt: As a result of decades of accountability beginning with No Child Left Behind legislation, students’ academic achievement has become the primary focus of schools. As schools focused more on academics, opportunities for physical activity often decreased. The school setting offers the greatest potential to increase physical activity for more than 55 million students per year. Texas schools have continuously tried to find a balance between the pressures of academic achievement and the necessity of students’ physical activity. Policymakers need targeted research results in order to provide legislation that will both meet federal physical activity recommendations and increase academic performance in schools. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between performance on FITNESSGRAM Health-Related Fitness Standards (in two categories: Muscular Endurance and Strength) and campus-level average STAAR scores in 8th grade Reading and Math. Participants included stratified random samples of student populations from each of the 20 Educational Service Center Regions in Texas. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine the predictive validity of performance on HRFS to STAAR scores. A Pearson correlation was conducted and the results suggested a positive correlation between students’ performance on Health-Related Fitness Standards (HRFS) and academic achievement. A regression analysis was run to explore the relationship between students’ performance on Health-Related Fitness Standards (HRFS) and academic achievement (predictors) as measured by campus-level STAAR scores. The study revealed that performance on Health-Related Fitness Standards (HRFS) impacted campus-level academic achievement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement. Subjects consisted of third- through eighth-grade students who were enrolled in the Floyd County School System located in Rome, Georgia, during the 2011-2012 school year. The data for this study were taken from the subjects' FITNESSGRAM scores, Criterion Referenced Competency Test scores, average daily attendance, and socio-economic status. The multiple regression analyses revealed modest correlations between body mass index and achievement in reading. The effects of fitness on academic achievement were positive but small. A higher level of physical fitness was associated with higher academic performance in school.

The primary purpose of this study was to review the efficacy of one nutrition and fitness program currently being used with at-risk high school students at Alta Vista Continuation High School in Vista, California. The study endeavored to determine whether or not the practice of the program's principles affected academic performance as measured by the number of credits students earned. Analysis of data collected from a period of five academic years indicates the program, called Treasure Hunters, had a statistically significant positive effect on the number of credits students earned. The study sought to answer the following question: when compared to a randomly selected control group, did students who participated in a program of nutritional awareness and resistance training demonstrate increased academic performance as measured by the number of high school credits they earned? While further study is required, it is hoped the current study will lend credence to a call for a review of education's present role in promoting a healthier lifestyle amongst our nation's youth and the impact a healthier lifestyle has on academic achievement. It is hard to wrap your brain around this notion that one size fits all, and that if we just work hard enough we will produce students ready to take on our future. Students do not come to school ready to learn in the same ways, nor do they learn in the same ways. Engagement is key to students' interactions with learning and educators have spent decades trying to find out how to keep students engaged. Researchers like Jenson (1998), Gregory and Kaufeldt (2015), and Medina (2014) suggest that student's brains need physical movement for the brain to learn best. Furthermore, researchers Katz et al (2010), Trost and van der Mars (2009), and Pate et al (2006) suggest that movement is vitally important in the school setting for increased student learning. The overall purpose of this study is to contribute to the literature regarding how classroom-based fitness activities effect high poverty students' interactions with literacy and engagement. More specifically, the purpose is to better understand the experiences of first grade students and first grade high poverty students with classroom-based fitness activities, and how those experiences effect their engagement with reading and writing.This action research informed qualitative case study takes place in a large elementary school where qualitative research methods were used for data keeping and analysis. Through interviews of teachers, study team agendas, and student voice shown through drawings, the action research team was able to explore student engagement before, during, and after classroom-based interventions were implemented. The study found four overarching themes: engagement, movement, movement influences all, and teaming for learning. Implications for school systems include a need for increased professional development for educators working with high poverty students, socially just leadership through collaboration, and a focus on equity throughout the school system. Policy implications include a need for a deeper understanding of poverty and the poverty line and how it effects our students in the classroom, as well as policy referencing the need for movement in our school day.

King, PhD Major Department: Pediatric School Psychology Children and adults spend the majority of their waking time engaged in sedentary activities. These activities may be affecting the child's physical and mental health. Little research exists on the relationship between the amount of physical activity, screen time, and academic achievement as a predictor for later physical activity and academic achievement. This study examined physical activity, screen time, and academic achievement predictors and the relationship on adolescent physical activity and academic achievement. Data for this investigation were drawn from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-K) and focused on 9,096 children who completed physical activity questions in eighth grade. The findings indicate that there were significant, positive relationships between reading and math skills. Additionally, there were significant relationships between kindergarten predictor variables. These predictor variables also all significantly contributed to physical activity participation in eighth grade. Similar to previous research, the current study found that children who scored high on reading and math assessment in kindergarten were more likely to continue to score high on reading and math in eighth grade. Policy recommendations for education and future research implications are discussed.
