Book Powering the Low Carbon Economy The Once and Future Roles of Renewable Energy and Natural Gas

Download or read book Powering the Low Carbon Economy The Once and Future Roles of Renewable Energy and Natural Gas written by Saya Kitasei and published by Worldwatch Institute. This book was released on 2010 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural gas provides a natural complement to variable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. It is the cleanest fossil fuel, emitting less than half the carbon dioxide and a fraction of the smog-forming pollutants that coal power plants do. Moreover, it can be used in a variety of efficient, flexible, and scalable generating technologies, enabling it to back up wind and solar generation on a range of time and geographic scales. If new supplies can be produced responsibly, natural gas can deliver immediate reductions in carbon emissions from the power sector. Methane, the main component of natural gas, already is being captured from landfills and other renewable sources, which can contribute a growing share of natural gas supplies in the decades ahead. As renewable energy and natural gas become more economical, their share in global power generation markets is increasing at the expense of coal. Working together, renewable energy and natural gas can facilitate a rapid decarbonization of the power sector and provide the foundation for a low-carbon energy future, starting now. -- from back cover.

Book The Future of Natural Gas in the World Energy Market

Download or read book The Future of Natural Gas in the World Energy Market written by The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 2001-04-04 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global trend to replace traditional fossil fuels like coal and oil with clean burning gas has been spurred on largely by heightened environmental concerns and international commitments to comply with noxious emission limits. The physical and combustion characteristics of natural gas are able to respond to these environmental concerns, thus providing highly industrialized nations in particular with a means to meet the requirements of international environmental agreements. The use of natural gas also includes the important advantage of high efficiency in gas-to-electricity conversion, a factor central to developing nations. Both the above have created a new demand sector for natural gas, which is reflected in the substantial growth of internationally traded gas over the last decade. This volume covers topics ranging from the commercial opportunities and constraints relating to natural gas exploitation - and its implications for the global oil industry - to the emerging gas technologies that are likely to chart its future development. The book also assesses the impact of government regulation and liberalization on the industry, from the Canadian and European perspectives, as well as regional developments in the Asian market, thus presenting a broad vision of past and future trends in the natural gas industry.

Book Natural Gas Future

Download or read book Natural Gas Future written by Richard L. Itteilag and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural gas is a vital component of the world's supply of energy. It is one of the cleanest, safest and most useful of all energy sources. Despite its importance, however, there are many misconceptions about natural gas. For instance, the word 'gas' itself has a variety of different uses, and meanings. When we fuel our car, we put 'gas' in it. However, the gasoline that goes into your vehicle, while a fossil fuel itself, is very different from natural gas. The 'gas' in the common barbecue is actually propane, which, while closely associated and commonly found in natural gas, is not really natural gas itself.

Book The Role of Natural Gas in Future Low carbon Energy Systems

Download or read book The Role of Natural Gas in Future Low carbon Energy Systems written by Aaron Matthew Schwartz (Researcher in Technology and Policy studies) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We find that investments in NG are made across all scenarios evaluated, as well as unprecedented deployments of variable renewable energy resources and battery storage. Results highlight the substantial emissions contributions of the existing coal fleet, and the potential for emissions reductions if lower-carbon generation resources, including new NG with and without carbon capture and storage, can replace this capacity. Furthermore, emissions limits which require the lowest mid-century CO2 emissions do not necessarily lead to the greatest cumulative emissions reductions over the planning horizon. These results support a nuanced approach to resource planning for future low-carbon grids which considers both short-term and long-term emissions reductions.

Book Viewing America s Energy Future in Three Dimensions

Download or read book Viewing America s Energy Future in Three Dimensions written by L. Louis Hegedus and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of the US energy infrastructure is a major and urgent challenge for our society. This monograph was stimulated by a report of the National Academies' Committee on America's Energy Future, America's Energy Future: Technology and Transformation, Summary Edition, 2009. The report pointed out the critical but poorly understood and little explored role of societal considerations in determining the fate of national energy policies and programs. In our efforts to respond to those concerns, we have examined the thesis that the three major dimensions of the energy challenge—technology, economics, and societal—are overlapping, interactive, and inseparable; therefore, they can be understood only when considered simultaneously and discussed in terms of their interactions. Correspondingly, this monograph describes energy technologies in the context of their economic and societal contexts, energy economics in their technological and societal contexts, and the societal aspects of energy in their technological and economic contexts. The monograph then identifies social science–driven research opportunities pertaining to America’s energy challenge, with the hope that the proposed research will help not only overcome the societal barriers identified by the National Academies' report, but also harness societal forces in developing a rational energy future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State climate and clean energy policy will play a critical role in the future of the political dialogue and economic development. Policymakers from around the world already recognize the leadership of American states in this domain. Rooted in public policy theory, and employing a mixed-methods approach that includes advanced economic analysis and qualitative research, Benjamin H. Deitchman explores the policy tools that address the politics and economics of clean energy development and deployment across all 50 states. Deitchman includes in his analysis international case studies of this policy context in Canada, Germany, and Australia to reveal different state-level policy tools, the politics behind the tools, and the economic implications of alternative approaches. The rigorous analysis of the politics of state level institutions and economic implications of subnational climate and clean energy actions offers researchers, students, and policymakers with practical information to advance their understanding of these options in the policy process.
