Book The Role of Lightning in Evolution

Download or read book The Role of Lightning in Evolution written by David Clink and published by ChiZine. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Role of Lightning in Evolution is the fifth book of poetry from Aurora Award winner David Clink, and his first book-length collection of speculative poetry since 2010’s Monster. This is speculative poetry at its best. Found in these pages are award winners and finalists: “A Sea Monster Tells His Story,” “The Perfect Library,” “A City of Buried Rivers,” and “The Machine.” Every poem goes beyond monsters and time travel and post-apocalyptic visions. There is heart here, a love of family (no matter how strange that family may be), ghosts, a seance, shapeshifters, a dragon made of words, an insect caught between dimensions, and a road that can feel your every footfall. Every poem is a journey beyond, a slice of another reality that lets us see our own existence in a different way.

Book Impact of Lightning on Evolution Structure and Function of Bacterial Communities

Download or read book Impact of Lightning on Evolution Structure and Function of Bacterial Communities written by Laurine Blanchard and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To diversify their genetic material, allowing adaptation to environmental disturbances and colonization of new ecological niches, bacteria use various evolutionary processes, including the acquisition of new genetic material by horizontal transfer mechanisms such as conjugation, transduction and transformation. Electrotransformation mediated by lightningrelated electrical phenomena may constitute an additional gene transfer mechanism occurring in nature. The presence in clouds of bacteria capable of forming ice nuclei that lead to precipitations and are involved in the triggering of lightning, such as the global phytopathogen Pseudomonas syringae, led us to postulate that natural electrotransformation in clouds may affect bacteria, by contributing to increase their adaptive potential. We first determined if the ice nucleator bacterium P. syringae could survive when in clouds and acquire exogenous genetic material through lightning shock-simulating in vitro electroporation. In comparison to two other bacteria, P. syringae appears to be best adapted for survival and for genetic electrotransformation under these conditions, which suggests that this bacterium would be able to survive and evolve whilst being transported in clouds. Secondly, we evaluated the impact of lightning shock-simulating in vitro electroporation on the survival, the electrotransformation potential and the diversity of bacteria collected from rain samples. These isolates better resisted lightning than the laboratory strains and some were able to electrotransform exogenous DNA. The rain bacteria we isolated were of different origins and were representative of life modes of the various sources of bacterial emissions on Earth. Our study suggests that bacteria aerosolized from diverse terrestrial ecosystems can spread to new habitats through clouds whilst also being able to acquire new genetic material via lightning-based electrotransformation, thereby potentially enhancing their genetic diversity. The final part of our work consisted of evaluating whether electrotransformation could be applied to the engineering of indigenous soil bacteria in order to develop a tool for the bioremediation of lindane, a once widely used pesticide. Optimized experiments revealed that both natural and electrotransformation contributed to the incorporation of a plasmid harboring a gene encoding the first lindane dechlorination steps by indigenous soil bacteria. In conclusion, we showed that natural electrotransformation mediated by electrical discharges such as those occurring in clouds or reaching soils can be involved in the horizontal gene transfer process among bacteria and, considering the importance of lightning worldwide, may play a role in the adaptation and evolution of these organisms.

The technical level of the subject matter covered in this book is designed to be readily understandable by the general public. The general emphasis is on the positive aspects of lightning. Man can neither control nor regulate this natural force of nature but must resign himself to the task of learning to live with and understand this phenomena. Lightning was part of the earth's environmental makeup before life appeared on earth. Lightning played an important role in creating life on earth. This same force has assisted in sustaining a livable earth and continues to balance those forces of nature to assure that life continues on this earth. It is the purpose of this book to attempt to help one understand the importance of this great force as it was in the beginning of life, its role in neutering life, and its ability to help sustain life on the earth.

Book Electrifying Atmospheres Charging Ionisation and Lightning in the Solar System and Beyond

Download or read book Electrifying Atmospheres Charging Ionisation and Lightning in the Solar System and Beyond written by Karen Aplin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical processes take place in all planetary atmospheres. There is evidence for lightning on Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, it is possible on Mars and Titan, and cosmic rays ionise every atmosphere, leading to charged droplets and particles. Controversy surrounds the role of atmospheric electricity in physical climate processes on Earth; here, a comparative approach is employed to review the role of electrification in the atmospheres of other planets and their moons. This book reviews the theory, and, where available, measurements, of planetary atmospheric electricity, taken to include ion production and ion-aerosol interactions. The conditions necessary for a global atmospheric electric circuit similar to Earth’s, and the likelihood of meeting these conditions in other planetary atmospheres, are briefly discussed. Atmospheric electrification is more important at planets receiving little solar radiation, increasing the relative significance of electrical forces. Nucleation onto atmospheric ions has been predicted to affect the evolution and lifetime of haze layers on Titan, Neptune and Triton. For planets closer to Earth, heating from solar radiation dominates atmospheric circulations. Mars may have a global circuit analogous to the terrestrial model, but based on electrical discharges from dust storms, and Titan may have a similar global circuit, based on transfer of charged raindrops. There is an increasing need for direct measurements of planetary atmospheric electrification, in particular on Mars, to assess the risk for future unmanned and manned missions. Theoretical understanding could be increased by cross-disciplinary work to modify and update models and parameterisations initially developed for a specific atmosphere, to make them more broadly applicable to other planetary atmospheres. The possibility of electrical processes in the atmospheres of exoplanets is also discussed.

Download or read book Design in Nature written by Adrian Bejan and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Adrian Bejan takes the recurring patterns in nature—trees, tributaries, air passages, neural networks, and lightning bolts—and reveals how a single principle of physics, the constructal law, accounts for the evolution of these and many other designs in our world. Everything—from biological life to inanimate systems—generates shape and structure and evolves in a sequence of ever-improving designs in order to facilitate flow. River basins, cardiovascular systems, and bolts of lightning are very efficient flow systems to move a current—of water, blood, or electricity. Likewise, the more complex architecture of animals evolve to cover greater distance per unit of useful energy, or increase their flow across the land. Such designs also appear in human organizations, like the hierarchical “flowcharts” or reporting structures in corporations and political bodies. All are governed by the same principle, known as the constructal law, and configure and reconfigure themselves over time to flow more efficiently. Written in an easy style that achieves clarity without sacrificing complexity, Design in Nature is a paradigm-shifting book that will fundamentally transform our understanding of the world around us.
