Book excerpt: Government reports indicate that, on average, more than 3000 people die due to distracted driving each year, accounting for nearly 10% of all fatal car crashes. Other reports claim that two-thirds of fatal car accidents result from aggressive driving. Previous research has been inconclusive regarding how personality impacts distracted and aggressive driving behaviors. Therefore, the goal of this current study is to fill the gap in the literature concerning the role that personality plays in distracted and aggressive driving behaviors. We also explored the role that distracted and aggressive driving behaviors played in accident involvement. A sample of (N=327) participants were recruited using social media and the UCF SONA System. They were asked to self-report their driving behaviors and personality traits by completing a series of online questionnaires (ADBQ, BFI, DBQ, DDQ, DEMO, and IPIP NEO PI-R). Using this data, bivariate correlations were run using the Pearson Correlation Coefficients to determine the role that personality (OCEAN) plays in distracted and aggressive driving behaviors. We used the DDQ and the IPIP NEO PI-R to evaluate the relationship between personality and distracted driving, and we found that personality traits: Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism were all significant predictors of distracted driving. Openness was the only one of the five personality traits to have no significant correlation. We used the ADBQ and the IPIP NEO PI-R to assess the relationship between personality and aggressive driving, and we found the same four personality traits: Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism were all significant predictors of aggressive driving. Openness was, again, the only one of the five personality traits to have no significant correlation. Backward regression analyses were performed to determine what caused these relationships. The regression analysis displayed trait subscales: Morality, Cooperation, Self Discipline, Activity Level, Excitement Seeking, Anger, Emotionality, and Liberalism, each significantly contributed to driver distraction. Another backward regression analysis reveals trait subscales: Morality, Self-Efficacy, Dutifulness, Self Discipline, Anger, and Artistic Interests, each significantly contributed to driver aggression.

A series of stepwise regression analyses revealed a significant linear relationship between trait anger and aggressive driving; trait anger and cognitive failures with aggressive driving; trait anger, cognitive failures, and trait cooperation with aggressive driving. However, the stepwise regression did not show a significant relationship between personality factors of Neuroticism and Agreeableness in relation to aggressive driving. Interestingly, the models supported the use of trait anger and trait cooperation as predictors of aggressive driving behavior. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and directions for future research are also presented.

There are numerous types of driver distraction, but one type in particular, cell phone use, seems to be exceptionally dangerous to drivers. These 'newer', technology-based distractions are more dangerous because they are more cognitively demanding, requiring the driver to manage multiple visual, manual and auditory demands while attempting to remain engaged in the primary task of driving. Additionally, there may be differences in driver performance depending on the type of cell phone usage such as calling back and text messaging. These issues may be conceptualized within models of driver workload. The present study investigated the effects of two relevant workload factors on driver performance: type of phone usage and automation of driving systems. Automation is an emerging trend among automakers that can potentially assist drivers by reducing workload, but recent studies suggest that automation might provoke dangerous states of underload in which effort is withdrawn from the driving task. There may also be individual differences in response to distraction that are linked to personality factors. As predicted from the workload model, the present study found that there are differential effects of talking on a cell phone versus texting, with text messaging shown to be associated with worse vehicle control. Individuals in the text messaging group also had the highest levels of distress following the drive. Drivers given a choice of response options tended to favor texting over talking, illustrating drivers' lack of insight into the safety issues. Automation did not produce clear signs of underload, such as large-magnitude loss of task engagement, suggesting there may be some benefits to phone use during automated driving. In sum, results demonstrate that talking and texting on a cell phone have differing impacts on driver safety, as well as providing further evidence to the benefits as well as dangers associated with vehicle automation.

A low value of 2D:4D indicates high in testosterone and low in estrogen and is characteristic of males. A high 2D:4D suggests low prenatal testosterone and high estrogen and is characteristic of females. Several studies report significant correlations between 2D:4D and such diverse traits as cognitive abilities and aggressiveness. However, there was no study about relationship between 2D:4D and various traits in driving. This study hypothesized that testosterone contributes human aggressive behavior and navigation ability during driving, and that 2D:4D will correlate with aggressive trait and cognitive performance. First study used questionnaire to measure aggressiveness scores from subjects. Second study used driving simulator with map which need to use mental rotation to measure navigation ability. For both study, 2D and 4D for right hand were measured. Men with low 2D:4D showed high aggressive driving score from the questionnaire. Men with high 2D:4D were record poor performance on navigation task. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that testosterone has an organization effect on aggressive behavior and navigtion ability in man. This study found no correlation between finger length ratio and any form of aggressive behavior or navigation ability in females.

The Global status report on road safety is the first broad assessment of the road safety situation in 178 countries, using data drawn from a standardized survey. The results show that road traffic injuries remain an important public health problem, particularly for low-income and middle-income countries. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists make up almost half of those killed on the roads, highlighting the need for these road users to be given more attention in road safety programmes. The results suggest that in many countries road safety laws need to be made more comprehensive while enforcement should be strengthened. The Global status report on road safety results clearly show that significantly more action is needed to make the world's roads safer. [Ed.]
