Book International Indian Graduate Students Experiences with Academic Advising at a Public Research University in Texas

Download or read book International Indian Graduate Students Experiences with Academic Advising at a Public Research University in Texas written by Vandana Nandakumar and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A missing component in the current international student literature is how international Indian graduate students adjust academically and socially to a new learning environment and how academic advising influences international Indian graduate students' academic success and social adjustment. This qualitative study addresses this gap in the literature by using Rendón's (1994) validation theory and by drawing upon 11 students' lived experiences at a four-year public research university in the state of Texas. Four distinct themes emerged from the study's findings, such as international Indian graduate students' lack of understanding of academic advising, their perceptions of academic advising, supportive academic advising experiences, and challenging academic advising experiences. The study revealed that international Indian graduate students' understanding and perceptions of academic advising were different from their lived experiences. The results also highlight the role of an academic advisor in students' adjustment process as well as the importance of an academic advisor in making informed decisions related to academics. More importantly, guided by Rendón's validation theory, it was determined that participants' believed their supportive experiences with academic advising validates their academic success and social adjustment, while their challenging experiences with academic advising (in)validate their academic success and social adjustment. The larger international student experience research must continue to delve into ways in which colleges and universities across the United States can play a substantive role in better preparing and supporting international students prior to and after their arrival. To that end, colleges and universities must also better prepare academic advisors when serving international students and provide for increased support and infrastructure in the field of academic advising.

Book Policy Implications of International Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars in the United States

Download or read book Policy Implications of International Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy Implications of International Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars in the United States explores the role and impact of students and scholars on US educational institutions and the US economy. The nation has drawn increasingly on human resources abroad for its science and engineering workforce. However, competition for talent has grown as other countries have expanded their research infrastructure and created more opportunities for international students. The report discusses trends in international student enrollments, stay rates, and examines the impact of visa policies on international mobility of the highly skilled.

Book International Students Expectations of and Satisfaction with Academic Advising at a Community College

Download or read book International Students Expectations of and Satisfaction with Academic Advising at a Community College written by Marieta P. Chemishanova and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sought to identify what expectations international students' had with regards to academic advising and how satisfied they were with their advising experience at a large community college in a southeastern state in the United States. Previous research on academic advising services (e.g. Belcheir, 1999; Hale, Graham, & Johnson, 2009; Mottarella, Fritzsche, & Cerabino, 2004; Propp & Rhodes, 2006; Lynch, 2004; Smith & Allen, 2006) had not distinguished between domestic and international students' expectations of and satisfaction with advising especially at the 2-year and community college levels and in organizational structures where the foreign student advisors serve as both the students' academic and immigration advisors. Such research is timely in the face of the highly competitive international education market and the increasing demands for U.S. institutional of higher education to meet students' consumer expectations with regards to educational services. Grounded in Expectation Disconfirmation Theory and employing a quantitative research design, this study investigated how factors such as age, gender, country of citizenship, class standing, and degree program impacted international students' expectations of and satisfaction with academic advising. Descriptive statistics, analyses of variances, and a partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) were used to answer the research questions. While the advising literature strongly advocates developmental advising, students in this study expressed a strong desire for elements of prescriptive advising.

Book Integrating International Graduate Students on Campus

Download or read book Integrating International Graduate Students on Campus written by Rachal Etshim and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International graduate students are a unique population that face specific challenges that affect their campus integration (Arthur, 2017; Burdett & Crossman, 2012; Sharma, 2019). The role of student affairs professionals and staff includes developing and integrating all students, including international graduate students, on-campus (Di Maria, 2012; Braskamp, 2011; Kuh, 2009; Wilcox, et al., 2005). However, many student affairs professionals and staff feel unprepared to serve or work with international graduate students (Brandenburg, 2016; Cierra, 2004; Di Maria, 2012; Yakaboski & Perozzi, 2018). There has been little empirical research conducted on student affairs professionals and staff members’ perspectives about their role in integrating international graduate students on their campuses. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to understand the perspectives of student affairs professionals and staff about their role in integrating international graduate students into campus and the policies, services, programs, and other elements they consider most helpful in integrating these students. This study was conducted at a four-year public higher education institution in the Midwestern United States that has committed to internationalization. The study design included data gathered from multiple in-depth semi-structured interviews, site observations, and documents shared by student affairs professionals and staff members. Inductive thematic analysis was used to examine the perspectives of each participant. It consisted of identifying, analyzing, organizing, describing, and reporting themes found within a data set. The data analysis revealed that student affairs professionals and staff play five roles in integrating international graduate students: educators, adapters, liaisons, career shapers, and barrier breakers. Within their roles of serving international graduate students, student affairs professionals and staff face challenges, such as limited on-campus resources for international graduate students, limited understanding of university policies, limited intercultural training, and limited intercultural exposure. To respond to the needs and challenges of international grad students, student affairs professionals and staff adapt the existing programs and support services initially designed for undergraduate domestic students, while some of the needs and challenges of these students are different. My findings recommend that institutions create support structures that allow student affairs professionals and staff to work with these students and learn more about their needs and challenges related to integrating into their campus.
