Book excerpt: A collection of papers assessing what has been accomplished and the obstacles that remain in the transition from communism to capitalism in East-Central Europe. The papers are arranged within four sections: the transition to market economies and political pluralism; Western assistance and integration; regional relations; and country studies. Each section begins with an overview. This assessment was initiated by a formal request from the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress to the Congressional Research Service. Some of the papers were discussed in May 1994 at a conference in Washington, DC. A compilation of statistical material prepared for the conference is included as an appendix. Book Transregional Connections in the History of East Central Europe

Download or read book Transregional Connections in the History of East Central Europe written by Katja Castryck-Naumann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transregional connections play a fundamental role in the history of East-Central Europe. This volume explores this connectivity by showing how people from eastern and central parts of Europe have positioned themselves within global processes while, in turn, also shaping them. The contributions examine different fields of action such as economy, arts, international regulations and law, development aid, and migration, focusing on the period between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the Cold War. The authors uncover spaces of interaction and emphasize that internal and external entanglements have established East-Central Europe as a distinct region. Understanding the connectedness of this subregion is stimulating for the historiography of East-Central Europe as it is for the field of global history.

Book Integrating Eastern Europe into the Global Economy

Download or read book Integrating Eastern Europe into the Global Economy written by J.M. Van Brabant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a modest contribution to the ongoing deliberations about how to ease the fairly tight constraints on the external payments of many countries of the eastern part of Europe. In the fIrst instance, this inquiry is addressed to those that have embarked on wide-ranging systemwide reforms. External constraints have been markedly hampering the introduction of market oriented economic mutations, thereby raising the cost of transition far above levels expected at the outset of the present wave of uniquely restructuring the countries involved. I explore here several angles of this discussion. But three stand out. One is the disintegration of the postwar framework for economic cooperation in that part of the world. Another is the disarray brought about by incisive economic transformations in the area. Finally, various national, regional, and international interest groups are at work there, hoping to mold somehow the drift of the reform, or at least key components thereof, in their own "image. " In the process it is often forgotten, as Ralf Dahrendorf (1990, p. 41) so pointedly remarked that "[ a]ll systems mean serfdom, including the . natural' system of a total . market order' in which no one tries to do anything other than guard certain rules of the game discovered by a mysterious sect of economic advisers.
