Book The Role of Corrective Feedback in Writing Improvement A Case of Iranian EFL Learners

Download or read book The Role of Corrective Feedback in Writing Improvement A Case of Iranian EFL Learners written by Sajad Sadeghi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 18.50, , course: The Role of Corrective Feedback in Writing Improvement: A Case of Iranian EFL Learners, language: English, abstract: Previous research has shown that corrective feedback on an assignment helps learners reduce their errors during the revision process. Does this finding constitute evidence that learning resulted from the feedback? Differing answers play an important role in the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of error correction, suggesting a need for empirical investigation. In this study, two groups of EFL learners were asked to write an in-class narrative. Their papers were collected, revised and returned to them in the next session. Half of the students had their errors underlined and used this feedback in the revision task while the other half did the same task without feedback. Results matched those of the previous studies: the underlined group was significantly more successful than the control group. Later on, the students were identically taught in 9 sessions. In the 12th session, however, the students were asked to write the same narrative they had produced in the first and second session as a measure of long-term learning. On this measure, the two groups were virtually identical. Thus, successful error reduction during revision is not a predicator of learning as the two groups differed dramatically on the former but were indistinguishable on the later. Improvements made during revision are not evidence on the effectiveness of correction for improving learners’ writing ability in the long run.

Book Response To Student Writing

Download or read book Response To Student Writing written by Dana R. Ferris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-02-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume synthesizes and critically analyzes the literature on response to the writing of second language students, and discusses the implications of the research for teaching practice in the areas of written and oral teacher commentary on student writing, error correction, and facilitation of peer response. The book features numerous examples of student texts and teacher commentary, as well as figures and appendices that summarize research findings and present sample lessons and other teaching materials. It is thus simultaneously comprehensive in its approach to the existing research and highly practical in showing current and future teachers how this material applies to their everyday endeavors of responding to student writing and teaching composition classes. Response to student writing--whether it takes the form of teachers' written feedback on content, error correction, teacher-student conferences, or peer response--is an extremely important component of teaching second language writing. Probably no single activity takes more teacher time and energy. Response to Student Writing is a valuable theoretical and practical resource for those involved in this crucial work, including L2 composition researchers, in-service and preservice teachers of ESOL/EFL writers, and teacher educators preparing graduate students for the teaching of writing.

Book Treatment of Error in Second Language Student Writing Second Edition

Download or read book Treatment of Error in Second Language Student Writing Second Edition written by Dana Ferris and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatment of Error offers a realistic, well-reasoned account of what teachers of multilingual writers need to know about error and how to put what they know to use. As in the first edition, Ferris again persuasively addresses the fundamental error treatment questions that plague novice and expert writing specialists alike: What types of errors should teachers respond to? When should we respond to them? What are the most efficacious ways of responding to them? And ultimately, what role should error treatment play in the teaching of the process of writing? The second edition improves upon the first by exploring changes in the field since 2002, such as the growing diversity in what is called “L2 writers,” the blurring boundaries between “native” and “non-native” speakers of English, the influence of genre studies and corpus linguistics on the teaching of writing, and the need the move beyond “error” to “second language development” in terms of approaching students and their texts. It also explores what teacher preparation programs need to do to train teachers to treat student error. The second edition features * an updating of the literature in all chapters * a new chapter on academic language development * a postscript on how to integrate error treatment/language development suggestions in Chapters 4-6 into a writing class syllabus * the addition of discussion/analysis questions at the end of each chapter, plus suggested readings, to make the book more useful in pedagogy or teacher development workshops

Book Written Corrective Feedback in Second Language Acquisition and Writing

Download or read book Written Corrective Feedback in Second Language Acquisition and Writing written by John Bitchener and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should language and writing teachers do about giving students written corrective feedback? This book surveys theory, research, and practice on the important and sometimes controversial issue of written corrective feedback, also known as “error/grammar correction,” and its impact on second language acquisition and second language writing development. Offering state-of-the-art treatment of a topic that is highly relevant to both researchers and practitioners, it critically analyzes and synthesizes several parallel and complementary strands of research — work on error/feedback (both oral and written) in SLA and studies of the impact of error correction in writing/composition courses — and addresses practical applications. Drawing from both second language acquisition and writing/composition literature, this volume is the first to intentionally connect these two separate but important lines of inquiry.

Book Effect of Unfocused Vs Focused Written Feedback on Writing Accuracy

Download or read book Effect of Unfocused Vs Focused Written Feedback on Writing Accuracy written by Behzad Ghonsooly and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines the effect of unfocused vs. focused written corrective feedback on the writing accuracy of Iranian advanced EFL learners. The findings revealed that the participants in the focused group improved in their writing accuracy although the improvement was not significant. However, it was found that the unfocused group performed worse in comparison to the scores obtained from their pre-test. This might adhere to some researchers' claims that corrective feedback might not be effective since learners' acquisition of various grammatical features is slow and complicated and that when feedback on various structures is provided, learners might be unable or unwilling to make use of them effectively while composing a new piece of writing.

Book The Effect of Correction on the Writing Ability An Iranian Case

Download or read book The Effect of Correction on the Writing Ability An Iranian Case written by Hossein Alinezhad and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compared the impact of two types of teacher written feedback on Iranian EFL learners' writing ability and their ability of tense consistency in L2 writing. After administering a standardized language proficiency test(Preliminary English Test),62 homogenous participants were assigned to the control(direct-only correction)and experimental(direct metalinguistic correction) group. The comparison of the groups on the writing pretest confirmed the homogeneity of the subjects before the instruction.During 10 sessions of instruction, the control group received direct-only correction by indicating the location of an error and the provision of the correct form, while the experimental group received direct metalinguistic correction by indicating the location of an error, writing the correct form, and providing metalinguistic comments explaining the reason behind correction. After the treatment, both groups took part in the writing and delayed writing posttests, respectively. The results indicated that direct metalinguistic correction was more effective in the improvement of EFL learners' writing ability and their ability of tense consistency and this improvement was retained over 3 w

Book Written Corrective Feedback in the EFL Classroom Types and Usage

Download or read book Written Corrective Feedback in the EFL Classroom Types and Usage written by Sven Frueh and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: This paper explores the types and the effects of written corrective feedback in the EFL classroom. Moreover, illuminative examples of written CF will be presented and discussed based on the findings. The examples are taken from a corpus of a variety of texts written by EFL students attending a pre-vocational school in Austria. Corrective feedback (CF), hence, the way educators provide feedback on the second language (L2) learners’ errors in hopes of helping them improve their accuracy, has been a highly contested area of research that brings about a phenomenal level of interest from both teachers and researchers alike. Regardless of the interest and research into this field, many questions central to L2 development are yet to be answered unequivocally. Therefore, educators around the world still have to rely on experience, intuition, and expectations of students and parents for the production of written corrective feedback. Ellis argues that the biggest hurdle for re-searchers is designing written CF studies that investigate the effectiveness and impact of different types of CF systemically. Nevertheless, identifying and evaluating written CF options is an important element for reasonable decision-making in the L2 classroom.

Book Engaging EFL Learners with Written Corrective Feedback to Develop Their Own Strategies of Improving Their Writing

Download or read book Engaging EFL Learners with Written Corrective Feedback to Develop Their Own Strategies of Improving Their Writing written by Laila Khalil and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study described the effectiveness of engaging learners fully and actively with written corrective feedback (WCF) in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in the Lebanese International University. In addition, this study aimed to investigate the role of WCF in the development of EFL learning, focusing on the development of learners writing skills and writing strategies. Recent studies have provided empirical evidence to support the positive role of feedback in students foreign language (FL) leaning mainly in the areas of writing skills and writing strategies development. In order to increase students awareness about feedback, I have investigated students attitudes and behavior towards WCF throughout a longitudinal descriptive study. The data collection consisted of the participants essays, following the course syllabus, one feedback questionnaire, and two writing strategies questionnaires. Participants essays were grades according to the Six-Trait writing rubrics, and the mistakes were numbered. The analysis of the quantitative data required both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics tools. Finally, the results presented the development of learners feedback awareness, their writing skills and their writing strategies. These findings reflected the literature that expressed the importance of raising learners awareness about WCF in a foreign language classroom, with a focus on textual and linguistic awareness. Pedagogical implications, further research, and recommendations are presented in the end of the study.

Book The Effect of Written Feedback on the Acquisition of Prepositions

Download or read book The Effect of Written Feedback on the Acquisition of Prepositions written by Shahla Morsali and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of three different types of written corrective feedback ( coded, uncoded, and metalinguistic feedback ) on the acquisition of selected prepositions among elementary Iranian EFL learners. The participants of the study were 90 learners who were selected from 136 elementary learners based on their performance on a KET test. Three experimental groups were formed, and there were 30 subjects in each group. Each group received one type of written corrective feedback on their writing tasks. After ten treatment sessions, the learners were given a posttest. Three weeks after the posttest, they took the delayed posttest. The three groups' performance on the posttest and delayed posttest were compared by one way ANOVA. The results showed that the learners in metalinguistic group outperformed the other groups both on the posttest and the delayed posttest. It was found that written metalinguistic corrective feedback helped learners to improve in accuracy.

Book Written Corrective Feedback for L2 Development

Download or read book Written Corrective Feedback for L2 Development written by John Bitchener and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written corrective feedback (CF) is a written response to a linguistic error that has been made in the writing of a text by a second language (L2) learner. This book aims to further our understanding of whether or not written CF has the potential to facilitate L2 development over time. Chapters draw on cognitive and sociocultural theoretical perspectives and review empirical research to determine whether or not, and the extent to which, written CF has been found to assist L2 development. Cognitive processing conditions are considered in the examination of its effectiveness, as well as context-related and individual learner factors or variables that have been hypothesised and shown to facilitate or impede the effectiveness of written CF for L2 development.

Book Asynchronous Online Peer Written Corrective Feedback

Download or read book Asynchronous Online Peer Written Corrective Feedback written by Ehsan Abbaspour and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on a study that was undertaken to investigate whether there is any statistically significant difference between the effects of asynchronous online peer written corrective feedback through blogging and traditional face-to-face peer feedback, on the short-term writing achievement of Iranian EFL learners. In addition, the study aimed at examining and analyzing the types of peer feedback that students provided through blogging on the writings of other students. The study also investigated the extent to which students revise their writings based on peer comments provided. And finally, this study intended to measure the attitude of students towards peer written corrective feedback through blogging. The findings of this study suggest that as computer assisted language learning (CALL) is finding a place in the mainstream of the milieu of language teaching and learning, asynchronous online peer written corrective feedback through blogging can be adopted to remedy the problems of technology-enhanced EFL writing classes in the Iranian context.

Book The Relevance of Corrective Feedback for the Development of Writing Competences in Secondary Level EFL Classrooms

Download or read book The Relevance of Corrective Feedback for the Development of Writing Competences in Secondary Level EFL Classrooms written by Kevin Salzmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Kassel (Institut für Fremdsprachenlehr- und Lernforschung, Interkulturelle Kommunikation), course: Hauptseminar: Error Analysis, language: English, abstract: Given that mistakes and errors are inevitable in second language acquisition, EFL teachers have to provide corrective feedback (CF) for their students to promote writing accuracy. In second language acquisition research, CF is a topic of great interest since Truscott (1996) argued that error correction has no significant effect for students’ new pieces of writing. Ferris (1999) and several other advocates have proven that different types of CF can be beneficial for L2 writing accuracy; however, as this thesis will demonstrate, direct and indirect types, as well as focused and unfocused types of error correction rely on different didactic approaches with different effects in students’ language awareness to be expected. As studies on written corrective feedback present divergent results, further research has to be done to get deeper insight into feedback practices that also include personality factors and other individual learner differences that might affect students’ perceptions of different CF strategies.

Book Teaching ESL Composition

Download or read book Teaching ESL Composition written by Dana R. Ferris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-09-15 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In keeping with the spirit of the first edition, Teaching ESL Composition: Purpose, Process, and Practice, Second Edition presents pedagogical approaches to the teaching of ESL composition in the framework of current theoretical perspectives on second language writing processes, practices, and writers. The text as a whole moves from general themes to specific pedagogical concerns. A primary goal is to offer a synthesis of theory and practice in a rapidly evolving community of scholars and professionals. The focus is on providing apprentice teachers with practice activities that can be used to develop the complex skills involved in teaching second language writing. Although all topics are firmly grounded in reviews of relevant research, a distinguishing feature of this text is its array of hands-on, practical examples, materials, and tasks, which are presented in figures and in the main text. The synthesis of theory and research in a form that is accessible to preservice and in-service teachers enables readers to see the relevance of the field's knowledge base to their own present or future classroom settings and student writers. Each chapter includes: *Questions for Reflection--pre-reading questions that invite readers to consider their own prior experiences as students and writers and to anticipate how these insights might inform their own teaching practice; *Reflection and Review--follow-up questions that ask readers to examine and evaluate the theoretical information and practical suggestions provided in the main discussion; and *Application Activities--a range of hands-on practical exercises, such as evaluating and synthesizing published research, developing lesson plans, designing classroom activities, executing classroom tasks, writing commentary on sample student papers, and assessing student writing. The dual emphasis on theory and practice makes this text appropriate as a primary or supplementary text in courses focusing on second language writing theory, as well as practicum courses that emphasize or include second language writing instruction or literacy instruction more generally. New in the Second Edition: *updated research summaries consider new work that has appeared since publication of the first edition; *revised chapter on research and practice in the use of computers in second language writing courses covers recent developments; *streamlined number and type of Application Activities focus on hands-on practice exercises and critical analysis of primary research; and *revisions throughout reflect the authors' own experiences with the text and reviewers' suggestions for improving the text.
