Cooperatives can help in assuring farmers to have access to inputs, credit, output markets, and opportunities to engage in more diversified, higher value crop production. These organisations can reduce the transaction costs of accessing markets and improve the bargaining power of small farmers' vis-à-vis large buyers and sellers. This study was conducted to assess the meaningful contribution of agricultural cooperatives in promoting food security and women's empowerment in Eastern zone of Tigray Regional State, Ethiopia. The study has adopted multi stage random sampling for the selection of multipurpose cooperatives and respondents and the data analysis employed various statistical tools like percentage, mean, standard deviation and regression analysis.The study result indicated that while cooperatives are serving the rural community, they are contributing a lot in improving the standards of living of their members residing in rural areas. They undertake various economic activities which help the members in promoting food security and gender equality. However, because of poor implementation capacity and low managerial, financial and operational competence, multipurpose cooperatives have not been able to strengthen and expand their business operations as per the expectations. The study recommended that concerted efforts are needed to organise seminars and campaigns to create awareness about cooperatives.

Not since W. E. B. Du Bois’s 1907 Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans has there been a full-length, nationwide study of African American cooperatives. Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes’ Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing. To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops’ articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted greatly from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the nation’s history.

Now with the emergence of the Fair Trade movement and public opposition to sweatshop labor, many people are demanding that artisans in third world countries not be exploited for their labor. International instruments on human rights, the environment and sustainable development reaffirm the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of sex or gender. Yet women often face gendered obstacles in realizing their rights and feeding their families. The right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food, may thus not be fulfilled. These obstacles may stem from directly or indirectly discriminatory norms or from entrenched socio-cultural practices, or both. This study analyses the gender dimension of agriculture-related legislation in a selection of different countries around the world, examining the legal status of women in three key areas: rights to land and other natural resources; rights of women agricultural workers; and rights concerning women's agricultural self-employment activities, ranging from women's status in rural cooperatives to their access to credit, training and extension services.
