Book excerpt: The objective of the research study is to evaluate the contribution of cement industry in the economic development of Pakistan. The study is basically a historical research and it covers all the developments made in the cement industry of Pakistan since its inception. The study reveals the importance of the cement sector for any economy by highlighting the major contributions of the industry in the economic development of Pakistan. The contribution of economic development of cement industry in the economic development is measured by the value addition of cement sector to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment opportunities created by the sector, receipts from exports, taxes paid to government and all revenues generated by the industry. The study reveals that the cement industry plays a key role in the economic development of Pakistan. The contribution of cement industry is very positive for not only the manufacturing sector but also for the overall economic development of Pakistan. The cement industry of Pakistan used to be a very tiny industry but it grew with the passage of time and ultimately it entered in the global market. The industry contributes in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it creates employment opportunities for thousands of people and it creates huge revenue for the government in the form of taxes. The cement industry of Pakistan attracted not only domestic investors but also foreign investors. At the end of the study, a critical evaluation of the cement industry, however discloses some major weaknesses of the industry.
