Download or read book The role of attachment in the aftermath of divorce written by Marie Klamer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Psychology - Developmental Psychology, grade: 1,0, Stockholm University, language: English, abstract: Divorce is a complex and emotional experience for many individuals as it involves the loss of a vital attachment bond within adulthood. Therefore, the perspective of attachment theory is highly applicable to the study of divorce. Attachment theory is a relevant framework for marital separation in two main ways. First, attachment theory provides a normative perspective on how individuals deal with the loss of an attachment figure. Second, individual differences in attachment behaviors can account for variations in people’s responses to divorce. This paper will discuss both of these perspectives from the theoretical background and review relevant empirical work. For reasons of space, the effects of divorce on children and adolescents are not considered in this paper. The focus is on the adult perspective.

Book excerpt: This informative book clarifies the complex picture of how the experience of divorce in one generation may influence the next generation’s approach to and preparedness for marriage. It identifies research and clinical issues regarding the effects of the parental divorce experience on young adults’patterns of dating, attachment, and mate selection. Divorce and the Next Generation focuses primarily on young adults and the patterns and attitudes regarding intimacy and attachment that they will carry into their own adult marriages. Book Effects of Parental Divorce on Children in Relation to Development and Attachment Style

Download or read book Effects of Parental Divorce on Children in Relation to Development and Attachment Style written by Sarah Elizabeth Cox and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive research on the impact of divorce on children has been conducted. Much of this research emphasizes negative findings. Debate over the factors that exacerbate or alleviate these negative findings exists, and prompted investigation in this literature review. Two factors that may determine how children will react to parental divorce are the child's developmental acuity and attachment style at the time of the divorce event. This review explains developmental tasks from a psychosocial and cognitive perspective for developing children from birth to age 18. An understanding of these models can be used to examine how children may be vulnerable to the stresses in a divorcing family, as well as identifying how to help children of all ages become resilient. Research included in this review suggests that a secure attachment and consistent parenting are the best buffers from negative effects. This literature review is intended to be a guide to aid parents, counselors, and other professionals who seek the best outcome for children of divorce.

Book excerpt: As Bowlby himself points out in his introduction to this seminal childcare book, to be a successful parent means a lot of very hard work. Giving time and attention to children means sacrificing other interests and activities, but for many people today these are unwelcome truths. Bowlby’s work showed that the early interactions between infant and caregiver have a profound impact on an infant's social, emotional, and intellectual growth. Book Working with Emerging Adult Children of Divorce in Therapy

Download or read book Working with Emerging Adult Children of Divorce in Therapy written by Kelsey C. Mendoza and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper proposes that attachment-based psychotherapy is a promising treatment to utilize with an adult child of divorce population during their emerging adulthood years. Researchers have long been interested in the short-term effects of parental divorce on children, however recently the literature has expanded its focus to include the long-term effects. Yet, very few studies provide therapeutic recommendations for working with adult children of divorce. Thus, this paper elucidates the developmental impact that divorce has on adult children of divorce and explores how attachment-based psychotherapeutic interventions can be utilized to address their concerns during emerging adulthood. To do so, the vast literature regarding divorce, divorce's short-term and long-term impact on children, attachment theory, emerging adulthood, adult children of divorce, and attachment-based psychotherapy will be summarized and integrated to propose an attachment-based psychotherapeutic approach to treatment specifically for emerging adult children of divorce. Finally, this psychotherapeutic approach will be outlined and supported to emphasize that the development of a new secure attachment relationship with a therapist can have a positive impact on this population in emerging adulthood and beyond.
