Book excerpt: The Fourth Convection and Moisture Experiment (CAMEX-4) provided a unique opportunity to observe the distributions and document the roles of important atmospheric factors that impact the development of the core asymmetries and core structural changes of tropical cyclones embedded in vertical wind shear. The state-of-the-art instruments flown on the NASA DC-8 and ER-2, in addition to those on the NOAA aircraft, provided a unique set of observations that documented the core structure throughout the depth of the tropical cyclone. These data have been used to conduct a combined observational and modeling study using a state-of-the-art, high- resolution mesoscale model to examine the role of the environmental vertical wind shear in producing tropical cyclone core asymmetries, and the effects on the structure and intensity of tropical cyclones.The scientific objectives of this study were to obtain in situ measurements that would allow documentation of the physical mechanisms that influence the development of the asymmetric convection and its effect on the core structure of the tropical cyclone. Book excerpt: Operational ability to forecast tropical cyclone motion is much better than the ability to forecast intensity change. Several recent works have studied the mechanisms that bring about the symmetrization of various types of asymmetries in tropical cyclones. This study was conducted to add to that knowledge by examining the transfers of kinetic energy between scales and how those energy transfers alter the wind structure of the cyclone. Adding to the understanding of how this process can alter winds is a step toward increasing ability to forecast these changes. A non-divergent barotropic spectral model was used to integrate annular bands of enhanced potential vorticity, simulating hurricane eyes, with varying degrees of offset from the center of the vortex. Offset monopoles of vorticity, simulating asymmetric convection in tropical storms, were also integrated. As discovered by previous researchers, these unstable eyes broke down into a series of mesovortices, which merged and eventually relaxed to monopolar or tripolar final states. The offset monopoles formed spiral bands and became symmetric as well. Kinetic energy was transferred from the mean flow to the asymmetries as mesovortices formed and then transferred back to the mean flow as symmetrization occurred. These energy transfers occurred very quickly. As energy was transferred from asymmetry to mean flow, the azimuthally averaged wind increased in a band of about 70 km from the center of the vortex, even though the maximum wind decreased, Azimuthally averaged wind in the monopole cases also increased, but the change was confined to a smaller radial band near the radius of maximum wind.

Book excerpt: The long term goals of this project are to improve and refine understanding of the dynamics of tropical cyclone structure and intensity change, with emphasis on the role of environmental dynamical effects on the intensity change process. This project builds upon the experience of the principal investigator in the study of extratropical cyclone dynamics in maritime regions during the past decade, and the recognition that extratropical maritime cyclones bear similarities to their tropical counterparts. Accordingly, a guiding theme of this research effort is to apply and extend well established dynamical perspectives on extratropical maritime cyclogenesis and cyclone life cycles to the tropics. The long term goals of this project have been addressed through diagnostic and modeling investigations of: (1) the origin and evolution of tropopause based precursor disturbances that culminate in rapid maritime cyclogenesis over the western North Atlantic Ocean; (2) the roles of trough interactions in tropical cyclone intensity change with a view toward determining the factors that distinguish between cyclogenetic and cyclolytic trough interactions; (3) the roles of environmental dynamical effects in tropical cyclone structure and intensity change; and (4) the kinematics of vorticity asymmetries associated with nondivergent barotropic vortices on a beta plane.

However, asymmetries often accompany the symmetric circulation. Spiral rainbands, elliptical eyewalls, polygonal eyewalls, secondary eyewalls, mesovortices, and deep rotating convective clouds are examples of such asym- metric structures. The contribution of these asymmetries to the intensity and structural changes of hurricanes are not well understood.In this thesis, a suite of numerical models (both two dimensional [2D] and three dimensional [3D]) along with a series of diagnostic tools (Empirical Normal Mode [ENM] method, linear eigenmode analysis, wave activities con- servations laws, Eliassen-Palm [EP] flux calculations, and eddy kinetic energy budget calculations), are used to study the underlying dynamics associated with: the lifetime of elliptical eyewalls (Chapter 2), the genesis of secondary eyewalls (Chapter 2,3), the origin of polygonal eyewalls and mesovortices and their contribution to the rapid intensification process (Chapter 4), and finally the role of asymmetric convective bursts to the intensification of developing hurricanes (Chapter 5). In Chapter 2, it is shown that the evolution and the lifetime of a 2D el- liptical eyewall may be controlled by the inviscid damping of sheared vortex Rossby waves (VRWs) or the decay of an excited quasimode. In the context of 2D vortex flows, it is also shown that secondary rings of enhanced vorticity (secondary eyewalls) can form by the radiation of VRWs that result from the release of barotropic instability, and the process of wave-mean flow in- teractions. In Chapter 3, the importance of VRWs to the secondary eyewall genesis is verified in a successful numerical simulation of hurricane Wilma (2005) that developed a secondary eyewall. In Chapter 4, an analysis of the simulated Wilma during the rapid intensification stage is performed to show that the observed polygonal eyewall in Wilma is the result of counterpropa- gating unstable VRWs. The analysis also indicates that the polygonal eyewall and mesovortices can assist in the rapid intensification process. Finally, in Chapter 5 it is shown that the response of a weak vortex to asymmetric con- vective bursts is dominated by the excitation of damped sheared VRWs that act to accelerate the symmetric flow through the radial transport of angular momentum." --

Book excerpt: The thesis work was in two major parts: development and testing of a new approach to detecting and tracking tropical cyclones in climate models; and application of an extreme value statistical approach to enable assessment of changes in weather extremes from climate models. The tracking algorithm applied a creative phase-space approach to differentiate between modeled tropical cyclones and their mid-latitude cousins. A feature here was the careful attention to sensitivity to choice of selection parameters, which is considerable. The major finding was that the changes over time were relatively insensitive to these details. This new approach will improve and add confidence to future assessments of climate impacts on hurricanes. The extremes approach utilized the Generalized Pareto Distribution (one of the standard approaches to statistics of extremes) applied to present and future hurricane distributions as modeled by a regional climate model, then applied the changes to current observations to extract the changes in the extremes. Since climate models cannot resolve these extremes directly, this provides an excellent method of determining weather extremes in general. This is of considerable societal importance as we are most vulnerable to such extremes and knowledge of their changes enables improved planning and adaptation strategies.
