It acknowledges the reality that AI is consequential for societies, organizations, work, and education and that it is becoming more and more interwoven into the cultural activities of everyday life. Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the world. However, the title also raises the big questions of what is learning with AI, who has the final responsibility for the quality of learning, and who will design the future of learning? AI opens enormous opportunities to education and learning and expands educational settings for learning in and beyond the traditional classroom. However, many innovations are still in their early stages and need much further research and deeper understanding of what the human roles and responsibilities are with respect to AI's integrations into learning environments and educational systems. For advancing safe and responsible routes to AI in learning and education, the researchers in Finland, the USA, and China have wanted to introduce developments in the latest research on AI in Learning with innovative practices and new solutions. Many chapters provide pedagogical applications and practices demonstrating how to use AI at different levels of education and, in working-life as lifelong learning settings. Cooperation between the three nation's researchers began in a series of joint triangle conferences for Intelligent Digital Tools for Learning and Education, organized at Stanford University in October 2018, the University of Helsinki in February 2019, and Beijing Normal University in June 2019. Thereafter, because of COVID-19, the cooperation has continued virtually. The book provides cutting-edge research and new scenarios for researchers, companies, policymakers, and all users including teachers and other education stakeholders. It also makes visible that AI has many ethical challenges. The penetration of AI in human life is connected to ethics, security, and human rights and presents important new challenges to research, policymaking, and governance as well as to companies with their AI businesses. Learning and education as fundamental human processes and cultural activities centrally concerned with human values are even more connected with ethical questions than many other more technical applications.

Although the principal leader for this effort was myself, each of the committee members devoted equally in time and effort in the total preparation and conducting of the workshop. Members of the organizing committee included Dr. Klaus Breuer from disce and the University ofPaderbom (Germany), Dr. Begofia Gros from the University of Barcelona, and Dr. Daniel Muraida and Dr. Michael Spector from the Armstrong Laboratory (USA). Dr. Gros participated as the co-director of the workshop and was directly responsible for the preparation and operation of the workshop in Sitges, Spain. The workshop was held in Sitges, a short distance from Barcelona, March 23-27, 1992. Because of preparations at that time for the 1992 summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, the workshop was moved to a more convenient location. The theme of the workshop included three main topics: planning, production, and implementation. Dr. Peter Goodyear, from the Lancaster University (England), presented the invited keynote address. During the four day workshop, 14 papers were presented and discussed. Following each of the three topic areas, Drs. Gros and Breuer led discussions critiquing the ideas presented.

Despite these emerging technology breakthroughs, AI learning is still new to educators especially to K-16 teachers. There is a lack of evidence-based studies that inform them about AI learning, including design principles for building a set of curriculum content, and pedagogical approaches as well as technological tools. Teaching AI concepts and techniques from programming languages and developmentally appropriate learning tools (e.g., robotics, serious games, software, intelligent agents) across different education levels emerged in recent years. The primary purpose of this book is to respond to the need to conceptualize the emerging term “AI literacy” and investigate how to teach and learn AI in K-16 education settings. This book examines different aspects of learning artefacts, pedagogies, content knowledge and assessment methods of AI literacy education, from theoretical discussions to practical recommendations for curriculum and instructional design. An exhaustive summary of current evidence with examples is illustrated in this book, as well as cutting-edge research that serves as an AI literacy model for different countries’ contexts. Part I, “Conceptualizing AI literacy”, provides a detailed discussion on the development of the concepts and frameworks on AI literacy education, discusses the differences and similarities between AI in education (AIED) and AI literacy education, and illustrates the reasons why K-16 students need to learn AI.
