Book Medicinal Plants Trees Shrubs of Appalachia

Download or read book Medicinal Plants Trees Shrubs of Appalachia written by Bill Church and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Plants Trees and Shrubs of Appalachia I originally wrote this book to help me identify plants in the field, woods and along streams for medicine and a friend suggested that I offer it for sale to other folks to help them also. This is the result of that work. I have studied herbal medicine since 1999 and have taken many classes on herbal medicine throughout the country. I tend to lean more toward the traditional Native American way of healing since that is in my blood. To really learn about the plants you have to put in the dirt time, that means that you have to spend as much time as possible studying them and don't depend on one book, use many different ones as each one gives you a different perspective on each plant. Find teachers to teach you and learn as much as you can from each. My hope is that whoever purchases this book will learn that all weeds are not weeds and that some medicine can come from your own back yard. One instructor that I had on herbal medicine says that she believes that for whatever ailment that you have at the time that you will find the cure in your backyard and I have found that plants will change location from year to year. This book covers 105 medicinal plants with color photographs; with a space on the back of each page for notes. I have provided information on weights & measures, dosages, gathering and drying of herbs, type of preparations, herbal properties, plant terms, a list of symptoms and what herb to use for them, plant usage, location, when to harvest, parts to harvest, when to gather, and when it blooms by month.

Book excerpt: Powerful attraction in one small bag Cultures worldwide have long incorporated small bags containing herbs, stones, and other sacred items as part of their belief systems, whether to ward off evil, protect them while traveling or to attract positive elements into their lives. Egyptians carried amulets for protection, Native Americans wore medicine bags filled with healing herbs, and African Americans collected “sticks, stones, roots and bones” inside flannel bags and called them “mojo” or “gris gris.” Gris gris and sachet bags are, in essence, a prayer or magical spell you can carry with you. Magic’s in the Bag explores this history, plus offers 75 simple spells to create your own gris gris bag, including bags for prosperity, safe travel, contacting spirits, protection and more. You’ll get tips on which plants to use, what stones are appropriate, what spells work best for phases of the moon — even how to grow a gris gris garden! Jude Bradley is a writer, editor, producer, and teacher. She also works as a spiritual consultant, using card readings, mediumship, and energy guidance in her practice. Jude lives in the Boston area. A native of New Orleans, Cheré Dastugue Coen is a freelance journalist, teacher, and author of both nonfiction books and a paranormal mystery series under the pen name of Cherie Claire.

Our ancestors have used indigenous herbs in daily life for thousands of years due to these plants' ability to heal and promote good health. The extraordinary diversity of herbal plants has the potential to improve our health and well-being, and we are wholeheartedly incorporating herbs, both fresh and dried, into our lifestyles—for well-being, healing, gardening, beauty, ceremony, and a richer, fuller life. Presented in three parts, Rodale's 21st-Century Herbal first explores the historical relationship between people and herbal plants and how it has evolved over time. In the second part, readers will delve into an A-to-Z encyclopedia of 180 of the most useful herbs from around the globe, not only familiar herbs like bilberry and nasturtium, but also cutting-edge herbs from other cultures, like red bush tea and maca, that are now available in the West. The final section highlights how herbs create a "fuller" life and features herbal cooking techniques, ways to use herbs for beauty and the bath, ideas for daily herbal use (such as green cleaning, fragrances, decor, smudging, and dyeing), gardening and growing how-tos (with illustrated garden designs), and advice for holistic herbal pet care.
