Book The Rod the Root and the Flower Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rod the Root and the Flower Classic Reprint written by Coventry Patmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rod, the Root, and the Flower IF St. Augustine found it necessary to publish fourteen books of Retractations, it is not likely but that I have, in the following pages, erred in some points, at least verbally; but I am the more likely to be exempt from considerable error inasmuch as I make no ridiculous pretence of invading the province of the theologian by defining or explaining dogma. This I am content with implicitly accepting; my work being mainly that of the Poet, bent only upon discovering and reporting how the loving hint of doctrine has met the longing guess of the souls of those who have so believed in the Unseen that it has become visible, and who have thenceforward found their existence to be no longer a sheath without a sword, a desire without fulfilment. The steam-hammer of that Intellect which could be so delicately adjusted to its task as to be capable of either crushing a Hume or cracking a Kingsley is no longer at work, that tongue which had the weight of a hatchet and the edge of a razor is silent; but its mighty task of so representing truth as to make it credible to the modern mind, when not interested in unbelief, has been done. I only 'report the cry which certain babes in Christ have uttered: Taste and see that the Lord is sweet. And far be it from me to pose as other than a mere reporter, using the poetic intellect and imagination so as in part to conceive those happy realities of life which in many have been and are an actual and abiding possession; and to express them in such manner that thousands who lead beauti ful and substantially Catholic lives, whether outside or within the visible Church, may be assisted in the only true learning, which is to know better that which they already know. Excerpt: ... magna moralia I To live holily and to believe nothing is the way of that " broad Church" which leadeth to destruction; for really so to live is worse than to live in harmony with its no-belief; since the conjunction of good in externals with evil in internals is as destructive a profanation as that of the opposite kind of conjunction, a real faith and an evil life. L ii In vulgar minds the idea of passion is inseparable from that of disorder; in them the advances of love, or anger, or any other strong energy towards its end, is like the rush of a savage horde, with war-whoops, tom-toms, and confused tumu

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER A dark and riveting story of the legacies—of magic and madness, faith and secrets, passion and loss—that haunt one family across the generations. Myra Lamb is a wild girl with mysterious, haint blue eyes who grows up on remote Bloodroot Mountain. Her grandmother, Byrdie, protects her fiercely and passes down “the touch” that bewitches people and animals alike. But when John Odom tries to tame Myra, it sparks a shocking disaster, ripping lives apart. "A fascinating look at a rural world full of love and life, and dreams and disappointment." --The Boston Globe "If Wuthering Heights had been set in southern Appalachia, it might have taken place on Bloodroot Mountain.... Brooding, dark and beautifully imagined." --The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Book The Flower of the Field Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Flower of the Field Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flower of the Field The "Flower of the Field" is addressed primarily to the "Girl World." Young hearts are like fallow ground, rich and full of promise, but undeveloped and waiting for the sowing of the good seed. Too often, alas, are they preoccupied by the noxious growth of worldly principles! Yet, if the love of Mary can but find a lodging there, it germinates quickly, stifling all baser growths and fructifying into every virtue. Go then, my little book, and spread broadcast this good seed. And as, in the ever-recurring miracle of nature, the tiny seed transforms the dull, dead earth into all the glories of field and forest, so may the germ of Mary's love fall into the fruitful soil of young, unsullied hearts, and develop there till they too, like Mary, become "Flowers of Nazareth." Many of the chapters are based on legends found in the Apocryphal Gospels; others are taken simply from the Gospel narrative, and from ideas suggested in meditation. The verses have been culled from the Lyra Liturgica of Canon Oakeley and the Carmina Mariana of Mr. Orby Shipley. Book The Burgess Flower Book for Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Burgess Flower Book for Children Classic Reprint written by Thornton Waldo Burgess and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Burgess Flower Book for Children Because of the story method of treatment, and also because of the limited vocabulary of the little child, the use of scientific names and even the names of most Of the parts of plants and flowers, save in the appendix for older people, has been avoided. This necessarily prevents that accuracy of description which the adult may desire. The vast number of flowers, which is America's rich heritage, makes it impossible to describe within the confines of a volume of this size more than a limited number. NO small part of the task was the selection of theflowers to be included. Most of them were chosen because of their wide distribution. For the most part, only the commoner flowers, those most likely to be encountered in walks in field, meadow and woodland, have been chosen. A few of the rarer ones have been included because of their beauty, and the hope that the desire to find these may act as a stimulant to interest. Download or read book The Day of the Triffids written by John Wyndham and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic postapocalyptic thriller with “all the reality of a vividly realized nightmare” (The Times, London). Triffids are odd, interesting little plants that grow in everyone’s garden. Triffids are no more than mere curiosities—until an event occurs that alters human life forever. What seems to be a spectacular meteor shower turns into a bizarre, green inferno that blinds everyone and renders humankind helpless. What follows is even stranger: spores from the inferno cause the triffids to suddenly take on a life of their own. They become large, crawling vegetation, with the ability to uproot and roam about the country, attacking humans and inflicting pain and agony. William Masen somehow managed to escape being blinded in the inferno, and now after leaving the hospital, he is one of the few survivors who can see. And he may be the only one who can save his species from chaos and eventual extinction . . . With more than a million copies sold, The Day of the Triffids is a landmark of speculative fiction, and “an outstanding and entertaining novel” (Library Journal). “A thoroughly English apocalypse, it rivals H. G. Wells in conveying how the everyday invaded by the alien would feel. No wonder Stephen King admires Wyndham so much.” —Ramsey Campbell, author of The Overnight “One of my all-time favorite novels. It’s absolutely convincing, full of little telling details, and that sweet, warm sensation of horror and mystery.” —Joe R. Lansdale, author of Edge of Dark Water
