Book The Rocky Road Over Emancipation to the First Black Regiments The Emancipation of Black Soldiers in the American Civil War

Download or read book The Rocky Road Over Emancipation to the First Black Regiments The Emancipation of Black Soldiers in the American Civil War written by Anne-Marie Schmidt and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2015-03 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did American policy delay black emancipation and official enlistment until 1863, and what were the blacks’ motives for enlisting at all? This study investigates black soldiers’ participation in the American Civil War and the struggles on their way to equality. By coming in thousands, fugitive slaves forced policy to finally tackle the hushed-up issue of slavery. First I will investigate the political background, starting with introducing the three main parties in the emancipation debate, and continuing with the political steps toward official enlistment and the reactions of society to these developments. Secondly, I will focus on the black soldiers’ motives, including influences that had shaped them and obstacles which prevented emancipation in practice, and finally I will explore the war’s results for the black population. Even though it is not expected that the movie Glory, which is frequently quoted, conveys an accurate and historically verified picture of the Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts, it gives a possible perspective of the blacks toward the war. This study focuses only on black soldiers and not on black participation in the war in general.

  • ISBN : 1462057098
  • Pages : 124 pages

Download or read book The Rocky Road written by LJ Hanna and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before she knew him, God was working in L. J. Hannas life. Though she grew up in the Catholic Church and practiced Catholicism, Hanna did not invite Jesus Christ to be her Lord and Savior as a girl. But later, on that glorious day when she accepted him into her heart, her life changed forever. The Rocky Road shares Hannas emotional story of how she went from a child who simply realized he existed to a woman who made him the center of her life. She had no idea, though, how God would reveal himself to her in the coming years. Hanna recounts the ways God began working his will through her. Whether it was through dreams, encounters with angels, or the interpretation of tongues, Hanna allowed herself to remain open to Gods message. But it wasnt all positive. Hanna not only struggled with those who mocked her and accused her of false doctrine, but also experienced terrifying demonic encounters. Yet even through this, the Lord made Hanna stronger and increased her faith, enabling her to overcome challenges both big and small. Deeply sincere and honest, The The Rocky Road is an inspiring testimony of faith, love, and courage, and definitively shows the power of Christ in our lives.

Book The Rocky Road to the Great War

Download or read book The Rocky Road to the Great War written by Nicholas Murray and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Murray's The Rocky Road to the Great War examines the evolution of field fortification theory and practice between 1877 and 1914. During this period field fortifications became increasingly important, and their construction evolved from primarily above to below ground. The reasons for these changes are crucial to explaining the landscape of World War I, yet they have remained largely unstudied. The transformation in field fortifications reflected not only the ongoing technological advances but also the changing priorities in the reasons for constructing them, such as preventing desertion, protecting troops, multiplying forces, reinforcing tactical points, providing a secure base, and dominating an area. Field fortification theory, however, did not evolve solely in response to improving firepower or technology. Rather, a combination of those factors and societal ones-for example, the rise of large conscript armies and the increasing participation of citizens rather than subjects-led directly to technical alterations in the actual construction of the fieldworks. These technical developments arose from the second wave of the Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth century that provided new technologies that increased the firepower of artillery, which in turn drove the transition from above- to belowground field fortification. Based largely on primary sourcesùincluding French, British, Austrian, and American military attache reports-Murray's enlightening study is unique in defining, fully examining, and contextualizing the theories and construction of field fortifications before World War I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of historical documents related to immigration of the Chinese to the United States. Special efforts were made to collect documents related to the Chinese Exclusion Act and its impact on the Chinese American society in the United Sates. This book details the Chinese American political struggles and social conditions in California and America. The painful history of misoneism, racism, and inequality are well documented. It all began during California's infancy, the 1850s Gold Rush, which Chinese natives referred to as Gam Saan (Cantonese, for Gold Mountain). These prevailing attitudes expressed misunderstanding and fear towards the Chinese community. And though these prejudices were acknowledged through the rescission of racist laws, an apology was never issued until 2009.

Riley Rhodes, travel food blogger and librarian at the CIA, makes a bittersweet return to her childhood home of Penniman, Connecticut – land of dairy farms and covered bridges - for a funeral. Despite the circumstances, Riley’s trip home is sprinkled with reunions with old friends, visits to her father’s cozy bookshop on the town green, and joyful hours behind the counter at the beloved Udderly Delicious Ice Cream Shop. It feels like a time to help her friend Caroline rebuild after her mother’s death, and for Riley to do a bit of her own reflecting after a botched undercover mission in Italy. After all, it’s always good to be home. But Caroline and her brother Mike have to decide what to do with the assets they’ve inherited – the ice cream shop as well as the farm they grew up on – and they’ve never seen eye to eye. Trouble begins to swirl as Riley is spooked by reports of a stranger camping behind the farm and by the odd behavior of the shop’s mascot, Caroline’s snooty Persian, Sprinkles. When Mike turns up dead in the barn the morning after the funeral, the peace and quiet of Penniman seems upended for good. Can Riley find the killer before another body gets scooped?
