Book excerpt: The Rock Whence We Are Hewn is comprised of various pamphlets and booklets written very early in the history of the Protestant Reformed Churches--between 1919 and 1940. The authors are two men whom God used in forming these churches--Herman Hoeksema and Henry Danhof. All the writings explain and defend the great doctrines of the Reformed faith that were fundamental to the founding of the Protestant Reformed Churches--covenant, predestination, particular grace, and antithesis. These writings therefore were used to establish these churches in the very beginning of their history. The contents of the book are their foundational writings. The title of the book is taken from Isaiah 51:1: "Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged." In this figurative way the prophet called the people of Israel to look to their origins. This title calls the members of the Protestant Reformed Churches, including the ministers and other officebearers, and especially the younger generation, to find in the book the doctrinal truths that are of fundamental importance to the Protestant Reformed Churches still today. By the work of the Spirit these doctrines, confessed, defended, and explained in the writings in this book, are the source of the churches--the rock whence they were hewn.

Book The Guide to the Perplexed

Download or read book The Guide to the Perplexed written by Moses Maimonides and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark new translation of the most significant text in medieval Jewish thought. Written in Arabic and completed around 1190, the Guide to the Perplexed is among the most powerful and influential living texts in Jewish philosophy, a masterwork navigating the straits between religion and science, logic and revelation. The author, Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, commonly known as Maimonides or as Rambam, was a Sephardi Jewish philosopher, jurist, and physician. He wrote his Guide in the form of a letter to a disciple. But the perplexity it aimed to cure might strike anyone who sought to square logic, mathematics, and the sciences with biblical and rabbinic traditions. In this new translation by philosopher Lenn E. Goodman and historian Phillip I. Lieberman, Maimonides' warm, conversational voice and clear explanatory language come through as never before in English. Maimonides knew well the challenges facing serious inquirers at the confluence of the two great streams of thought and learning that Arabic writers labeled 'aql and naql, reason and tradition. The aim of the Guide, he wrote, is to probe the mysteries of physics and metaphysics. But mysteries, to Maimonides, were not conundrums to be celebrated for their obscurity. They were problems to be solved. Maimonides' methods and insights resonate throughout the work of later Jewish thinkers, rationalists, and mystics, and in the work of philosophers like Thomas Aquinas, Spinoza, Leibniz, and Newton. The Guide continues to inspire inquiry, discovery, and vigorous debate among philosophers, theologians, and lay readers today. Goodman and Lieberman's extensive and detailed commentary provides readers with historical context and philosophical enlightenment, giving generous access to the nuances, complexities, and profundities of what is widely agreed to be the most significant textual monument of medieval Jewish thought, a work that still offers a key to those who hope to harmonize religious commitments and scientific understanding.

Book Prominent Peaks of the Pilgrimage Book One

Download or read book Prominent Peaks of the Pilgrimage Book One written by Pilgrim Preacher and published by Pilgrim Preacher. This book was released on 2023-04-23 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series is entitled: Prominent Peaks of the Pilgrimage. Divided into two books, this twenty-lesson course traces the journey of the people of Israel, from out of the land of Egypt, into the land of Canaan. We will visit the people of Israel at the prominent peaks of their pilgrimage. Our main texts will come from the bible books of Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua. We shall see that the events that befell the children of Israel at the mountain sites are the very things that we have to expect on our pilgrimage. The lessons that the people of Israel had to learn are the very same lessons that our loving Lord would have us learn also. So, it behooves us to take a close look at the Lord's people and their pilgrimage, so that we can be better fit for our pilgrimage, for there are many pitfalls, dangers, and perils. Another major purpose of this course is to look at different aspects of the doctrine of salvation. Every keyword in this course brings out a new revelation concerning biblical salvation. Biblical salvation covers more than just the regeneration of the human spirit. Many struggles in the lives of Christians can be traced to unfamiliarity with the doctrine of salvation. If we do not see all that the Lord has done in salvation, then we will have unnecessary struggles. The doctrine of salvation permeates this entire course. We will turn salvation over and look at the subject in all its fullness. God is only interested in complete salvation. God is interested in salvation that delivers the sinful man: spirit, soul, and body; past, present, and future; penalty, power, and presence. That is what God's business is: complete salvation. These two books containing twenty chapters/lessons can be read privately, or they can be taught in an audience setting. Reader’s Feedback “An absolutely powerful bible course to transform willing hearts. Each lesson is packed with life-transforming principles. Many of these study courses were converted into E-books and published online in all good stores. With over thirty-five years of theological experience, YOU can trust these Bible Message Series to present in a Church or classroom setting. Get this book to be all that you can be!
