Jesus called these the beginning of the birth pains. Ford flipped to the Book of Revelation and recognized the same events were described in Revelation 6. To Ford, it seemed that the first three horsemen of Revelation matched the first three birth pains almost exactly. Ford and his lifelong friend, Samantha, piece together the puzzle that has eluded many for so long. They begin to find scriptural evidence that the events described in parts of the Book of Daniel also match those found in the Book of Revelation. Furthermore, they discover evidence that these books are linked to the Book of Ezekiel. America has become weak and vulnerable, and this vulnerability will be taken advantage of by terrorists and other enemies. As the world around them begins to unravel, Ford and Samantha make the realization that Biblical prophecy is coming alive right before their eyes.

Middleton shows that acceptance of martyrdom is to grasp the invitation to participate in the Revelation's divine violence. Martyrs follow the model laid down by the Lamb, who was not only slain, but resurrected, glorified, and who executes judgement. The world created by the Apocalypse encourages readers to conquer the Beast through martyrdom, but also through the experience of resurrection and being appointed judges. In this role, martyrs participate in the judgement of the wicked by sharing the Lamb's power to judge. Different from eschewing violence, the conceptual world of the Apocalypse portrays God, the Lamb, and the martyrs as possessing more power, might, and violent potential than the Emperor and his armies. Middleton believes that martyrdom and violence are necessary components of the worldview of Revelation.
