Book ASEAN Financial Integration

Download or read book ASEAN Financial Integration written by Geert Almekinders and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) at end-2015 has brought into sharp focus the issue of financial and economic integration in the region. This paper takes stock of ASEAN’s financial integration and prospects. ASEAN integration could accelerate in the years ahead; it will likely be a safe, gradual process consistent with the “ASEAN way” of consensus decision-making. Properly phased and sequenced, closer financial integration has the potential to help increase real incomes and accelerate real convergence within ASEAN and narrow the region’s gap with advanced Asia. Realizing the promise of financial integration will require ASEAN countries to make long-term investments in financial infrastructure. Policymakers can draw on the experience of their more advanced peers and of other regions. Gradualism and safeguards should not be excuses for inaction or financial protectionism. Reliance on flexible policy frameworks and a strengthened and tested regional financial safety net should be part of the agenda. Closer engagement with the Fund could also help.

Book The Dynamics of Asian Financial Integration

Download or read book The Dynamics of Asian Financial Integration written by Michael Devereux and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing global financial crisis has manifested a remarkable degree of global financial integration—and its implications—for emerging Asian financial markets. The current crisis will not and should not deter the progress that the region has made toward financial openness and integration. However, events like this clearly demonstrate that financial liberalization and integration is not without risks. Hence, emerging Asian economies' growing financial ties have motivated us to look closer at the repercussions of increased financial integration and evaluate the benefits of risk sharing and better access to international capital markets against the costs of cross-border financial contagion. The crisis also presents a timely opportunity for the region’s policy makers to rethink their strategies for financial deregulation and liberalization and to reconsider a next step to integrate emerging East Asia’s financial markets further. However, doing so requires deeper understanding of financial market integration. While much has been said in both academic and policy circles about financial globalization and regional financial integration as separate areas of study, existing research has been relatively silent on the dynamics between these two distinctive forces. The book addresses this gap in financial literature and assesses financial integration in emerging East Asia at both regional and global levels. The publication studies the factors driving the progress of regional financial integration in relation to financial globalization and identifies the relevant policy challenges facing emerging market economies in the region. Chapters look into three broad aspects of regional and global financial market integration: (i) measurement of regional and global financial integration, (ii) understanding dynamics of regional financial integration versus global financial integration, and (iii) welfare implications from regional financial market integration amid financial globalization. Against this context, academics, policy makers, and other readers will appreciate the rigorous research contribution provided by the book.

Book ASEAN Financial Integration and One Belt One Road

Download or read book ASEAN Financial Integration and One Belt One Road written by Christopher C. Chen and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper generally explores legal challenges to Chinese financial institutions in Southeast Asia amidst China's grand 'One Belt, One Road' plan in 2015 and the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nationals (ASEAN) Economic Community effective in 2016. Banking and finance play an important role in promoting trade, investment and infrastructure projects. As an immense economic bloc located immediately south of China, ASEAN's development would have an immense effect on China's 'One Belt, One Road' strategy. In this paper, we outline the current development of financial integration regarding the banking and insurance sectors in ASEAN and consider legal obstacles and potential trade barriers facing Chinese banks and insurers offering credit facilities or insurance protection for projects conducted in ASEAN amidst further ASEAN financial integration and the ASEAN-China free trade agreement in the modern digital era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important and timely volume: important because ASEAN is an increasingly significant and influential regional and global actor; and timely because, as the 2015 ASEAN Economic Community target approaches, what is needed is a sympathetic yet arms-length survey of the issues and challenges. ASEAN will miss some of the targets laid out in its AEC Blueprint, but the reader is left in no doubt that the ASEAN spirit is alive and well. The editors include a distinguished former Secretary General of ASEAN and the leading academic analyst of ASEAN economic cooperation. They and their co-editors are to be congratulated for soliciting contributions from an outstanding and diverse group of authors, and then adding their highly authoritative commentary and analysis. A must read for anybody seriously interested in ASEAN.

Book Drivers of Financial Integration Implications for Asia

Download or read book Drivers of Financial Integration Implications for Asia written by Nasha Ananchotikul and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deeper intraregional financial integration is prominent on Asian policymakers’ agenda. This paper takes stock of Asia’s progress toward that objective, analyzing recent trends in cross-border portfolio investment and bank claims. Then, it investigates the drivers of financial integration by estimating a gravity model of bilateral financial asset holdings on a large sample of source and destination countries worldwide, focusing in particular on the role of regulation and institutions. The paper concludes that financial integration in Asia could be enhanced through policies that lower informational frictions, continue to buttress trade integration and capital market development, remove restrictions to foreign flows and bank penetration, and promote a common regulatory framework.

Book Real and Financial Integration in Asia

Download or read book Real and Financial Integration in Asia written by Shandre M. Thangavelu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the impact of both real and financial integration to growth and to welfare, and to enquire whether increases in either or both forms build the linkage between the real and financial economy. It contributes to the following two areas: (1) Research of economic developments in East Asia, the most dynamic and populous region in the world, in itself is important for researchers, policy makers, journalists, business people and others. East Asia’s economic developments influence peoples’ lives not only in East Asia but also in other parts of the world. (2) Many aspects of East Asian experiences in economic development are unique, making research of East Asia attractive and important to discern mechanisms of economic development. The first part of this study begins with chapters that address the measurement of regional integration compared with the engagement with the global economy and how this influences the aggregate behavior of the economies. The second part turns to consideration of the financial sector and the efficiency and performance of banking in the region. This allows a discussion whether, in the current crisis, the banking sector was an important channel of financial shock into real behavior. The third part turns to the corporate sector. Using data on firms, type of finance used by firms, its impact on their performance, and ownership structure influence over the productivity growth are discussed. Based on the findings, the book presents several policy recommendation and future research agenda for further economic integration in East Asia.

Book Roadmap to an ASEAN Economic Community

Download or read book Roadmap to an ASEAN Economic Community written by Denis Hew Wei-Yen and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2005 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Ninth ASEAN Summit in Bali on 7 October 2003, the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations agreed to establish an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2020. It is envisaged that the AEC would be a single market and production base, with a free flow of goods and services, investments, capital and skilled labour. An integrated ASEAN with a sizeable market of over 500 million people could become an alternative to China as a regional production base for MNCs. Although there are roadmaps for the fast-track integration of eleven priority sectors, an overall longer-term roadmap needs to be formulated to realize the AEC. This book addresses the main issues.

Book The Future of the ASEAN Economic Integration

Download or read book The Future of the ASEAN Economic Integration written by Kiki Verico and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verico discusses the ASEAN economic integration from dual perspectives of time span (trade, investment and finance) and framework (bilateral, sub-regional, regional and regional plus). The work is a comprehensive study of the integration in the wake of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)’s inauguration in late 2015. Examining various economic agreement levels from the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), Bilateral Free Trade Agreement (BFTA) and the AEC to financial integration in ASEAN, Verico attempts to envisage the future of ASEAN in completing its regional economic integration from trade to investment and finance. Verico argues that, in the absence of a customs union, ASEAN must utilize the open-regionalism frameworks of the ASEAN Plus One, ASEAN Plus Three, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and others in order to shift its economic integration level in this way.

Book INTEGRATION OF FINANCIAL MARKETS IN ASEAN

Download or read book INTEGRATION OF FINANCIAL MARKETS IN ASEAN written by Ajit Singh and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of financial markets in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) aims to create a seamless and efficient financial landscape across the member countries. It involves harmonizing regulations, enhancing cooperation, and promoting cross-border transactions within the region. The key objectives of the integration are to promote economic growth, attract investments, improve financial stability, and facilitate the free flow of capital within ASEAN. By integrating financial markets, ASEAN aims to create a single market for financial services, similar to the European Union's single market. To achieve this, several initiatives and measures have been undertaken: 1.Harmonization of regulations: ASEAN member countries work towards aligning their financial regulations, standards, and practices. This includes harmonizing accounting standards, disclosure requirements, and regulatory frameworks to ensure consistency and transparency. 2.Financial liberalization: Barriers to the flow of capital, such as capital controls and restrictions on foreign ownership, are gradually reduced to promote investment and encourage cross-border transactions. This allows investors to diversify their portfolios and access a wider range of investment opportunities. 3.Capital market development: Efforts are made to develop and deepen capital markets within ASEAN countries. This includes promoting the establishment of stock exchanges, bond markets, and derivatives markets, as well as enhancing market infrastructure, such as clearing and settlement systems. 4.Financial connectivity: ASEAN countries strive to enhance connectivity among their financial systems. This involves improving payment and settlement systems, promoting interoperability among financial institutions, and facilitating cross-border fund transfers. 5.Financial sector cooperation: Member countries collaborate closely on financial sector issues through forums such as the ASEAN Finance Ministers' Meeting and the ASEAN Banking Integration Framework. This cooperation helps in sharing best practices, addressing regulatory challenges, and fostering a conducive environment for financial integration. 6.Investor protection: Measures are put in place to safeguard the interests of investors in the integrated financial markets. This includes strengthening investor protection mechanisms, promoting corporate governance standards, and ensuring adequate disclosure and transparency. The integration of financial markets in ASEAN is an ongoing process and requires continuous efforts from member countries. While progress has been made, challenges such as differing regulatory frameworks, market fragmentation, and varying levels of financial development among member countries need to be addressed to achieve a fully integrated and efficient financial market in the region.

Book Monetary and Financial Integration in East Asia Volume 1

Download or read book Monetary and Financial Integration in East Asia Volume 1 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1997 Asian financial crisis, countries in East Asia have made efforts to promote regional monetary and financial cooperation to complement the evolving international financial architecture. This increased interest in regional monetary and financial cooperation has resulted in several initiatives - the ASEAN Surveillance Process, the ASEAN+3 Finance Ministers Process including its Chiang Mai Initiative of 2000, the Manila Framework Group and the Asia-Europe Finance Ministers Process to name a few. These developments in some ways represent a significant break from the past. Going forward the key challenge is how to set priorites and sequence developments so as to smooth the path to a new regional financial architecture. This two-volume set takes up the issue of developing a road map of policy options, both at the regional and country levels, for carrying forward the ongoing efforts in monetary and financial cooperation in East Asia. Building on a series of core reports and background papers by eminent economists and policymakers around the world commissioned under an ADB technical assistance project, the books explore what is feasible and desirable in regional monetary and financial cooperation and lays out a road map for putting the concept into action over the next several years. Volume 1 contains an overview by Peter Montiel, and three core studies by Olam Chaipravat, Eric Girardin, and Takatoshi Ito and Yung-Chul Park. Volume 2 contains background papers by Robert J. Barro; Elbliog‚onore Boiscuvier and Alfred Steinherr; Barry Eichengreen; Jeffrey A. Frankel; Eric Girardin; Jong-Wha Lee; Yung-Chul Park and Kwanho Shin; Ronald McKinnon; Eiji Ogawa, Takatoshi Ito, and Yuri Nagataki Sasaki; Ramkishen Rajan and Reza Siregar; Yunjong Wang and Wing Thye Woo; and Charles Wyplosz. The volumes and the study on which they were based were conceptualized, supervised, and coordinated by Pradumna B. Rana and Srinivasa Madhur.

Book The ASEAN Economic Community and Beyond

Download or read book The ASEAN Economic Community and Beyond written by Sanchita Basu Das and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2015 has special significance for regional economic integration. The ASEAN Community, integrating the political, economic and social aspects of regional cooperation, will complete its first milestone by December 2015. Expectations of tangible benefits under an ASEAN Economic Community have attracted much attention though many of the initiatives will be realized post-2015. Following the policy of open regionalism, ASEAN has also signed free trade agreements with Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Japan and South Korea. It has launched negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement in 2013, with expected breakthrough by end-2015. The Southeast Asian economies are also involved in two other regional initiatives. First is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), initiated by the United States. As part of the U.S. “pivot to Asia”, the TPP is envisioned as a “comprehensive and high-quality” agreement and has concluded its negotiation in October 2015. Second, the discussions on regional connectivity have broadened; China has emerged as a recent lead proponent with its proposals for “One Belt, One Road” and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. All these together have implications not only for individual Southeast Asian countries but also for regional trading architecture. To aid in understanding the beginnings, development, and potential of these grand plans, this collection of 22 essays offers a rich analysis of ASEAN’s own economic integration and other related initiatives proliferating in the broader Asia-Pacific region.
