Book No Place for a Lady

Download or read book No Place for a Lady written by Thea Rosenbaum and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Place for a Lady charts Thea Rosenbaums turbulent life from a little girl escaping the Soviet Army with her mother in Berlin in 1945 to becoming Germanys first woman stock broker at Oppenheimer and Co. to Germanys only woman war correspondent in Vietnam. She then embarked on a career as producer for ARD German television in the US, where she was White House pool producer for foreign correspondents from the late 70s to late 2000s. In this capacity, she traveled with five presidents and was present in Germany for the end of the Cold War as the Berlin Wall fell. Her life, as a civilian, correspondent, and producer, bookends and charts the greatest conflict of the later half of the twentieth century. As she rose in the ranks of a difficult career, she was constantly overcoming her sense of inferiority, ugliness, and even stupidity. While becoming a journalist was always something she aspired to, as a young lady, she believed she was too stupid to achieve it, and yet she was able to succeed in every facet of the work for five decades. At every point in her historic career, she overcame the under-expectations and prejudices of her contemporaries as well as, and most especially, her own inner weakness and self-deprecation. As to the history she witnessed, she gathered chocolate in the streets of Berlin that the Americans dropped during the Berlin Airlift. As a West Berliner, she was there the night the barbed wire first went up, hardening the East/West divide. Later, and as a journalist, she was in Khe-Sanh in 68 when it was the focus of attack by the NVA until the Tet Offensive began, when she reported on the NVA and Vietcong attacks from Nam O, Hue, and Saigon. She was the first woman to report from a nuclear submarine. She covered the Carter administration for the Camp David Accords as well as reporting from Cairo when the deal was finalized. No Place for a Lady also reveals many of Theas funny, and sometimes not, interactions with Americas greatest journalists.

Book No Place for a Lady

Download or read book No Place for a Lady written by Shelby Tisdale and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of the twentieth century, the canyons and mesas of the Southwest beckoned and the burgeoning field of archaeology thrived. Among those who heeded the call, Marjorie Ferguson Lambert became one of only a handful of women who left their imprint on the study of southwestern archaeology and anthropology. In this delightful biography, we gain insight into a time when there were few women establishing full-time careers in anthropology, archaeology, or museums. Shelby Tisdale successfully combines Lambert’s voice from extensive interviews with her own to take us on a thought-provoking journey into how Lambert created a successful and satisfying professional career and personal life in a place she loved (the American Southwest) while doing what she loved. Through Lambert’s life story we gain new insight into the intricacies and politics involved in the development of archaeology and museums in New Mexico and the greater Southwest. We also learn about the obstacles that young women had to maneuver around in the early years of the development of southwestern archaeology as a profession. Tisdale brings into focus one of the long-neglected voices of women in the intellectual history of anthropology and archaeology and highlights how gender roles played out in the past in determining the career paths of young women. She also highlights what has changed and what has not in the twenty-first century. Women’s voices have long been absent throughout history, and Marjorie Lambert’s story adds to the growing literature on feminist archaeology.

Book No Place for Home

Download or read book No Place for Home written by Jay Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to venture beyond interpretations of Cormac McCarthy's characters as simple, antinomian, and non-psychological; and of his landscapes as unrelated to the violent arcs of often orphaned and always emotionally isolated and socially detached characters. As McCarthy usually eschews direct indications of psychology, his landscapes allow us to infer much about their motivations. The relationship of ambivalent nostalgia for domesticity to McCarthy's descriptions of space remains relatively unexamined at book length, and through less theoretical application than close reading. By including McCarthy's latest book, this study offer the only complete study of all nine novels. Within McCarthy studies, this book extends and complicates a growing interest in space and domesticity in his work. The author combines a high regard for McCarthy's stylistic prowess with a provocative reading of how his own psychological habits around gender issues and family relations power books that only appear to be stories of masculine heroics, expressions of misogynistic fear, or antinomian rejections of civilized life.

Book excerpt: "The Red Lady" by Katharine Newlin Burt is a supernatural thriller full of mysterious events and unexpected death. The story is written in a gothic first-person style. The narrative revolves around Janice Gale, a new housekeeper assigned to a country place near Pine Cone. The house was accused of being haunted by several ghosts. The majority of the house staff resigned after seeing ghosts many times. Janice decides to investigate this ghost thing and experience several strange happenings all over the manor house. Soon she concludes that the ghost is in search of some lost Russian jewels. Now the matters are more complicated as Janice falls into a trap set by one of the houseguests, who makes her believe she has a split personality disorder. But that's not true because the ghost looks just like Janice.... Excerpt: "I was the housekeeper at the time for little Mrs. Brane. How I had come to be her housekeeper might have served to forewarn me, if I had had the clue. None but an inexperienced, desperate girl would have taken the position after the fashion in which I was urged to take it. I remember the raw, colorless day, and how it made me shiver to face its bitter grayness as I came out of the dismal New York boardinghouse to begin my dreary, mortifying search for work. I remember the hollowness of purse and stomach; and the dullness of head. I even remember wondering that hair like mine, so conspiculously golden-red, could possibly keep its flame under such conditions. And halfway down the block, how very well I remember the decent-looking, black-clad woman who touched my arm, looked me hard in the face, and said, "A message for you, madam."
