Book The Road Home Filip Lucian Iorga In dialogue with Prince Nicholas of Romania

Download or read book The Road Home Filip Lucian Iorga In dialogue with Prince Nicholas of Romania written by Nicholas Prince of Romania and published by Elefant Online. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from the dialogue initiated by historian Filip-Lucian Iorga, this e-book introduces Prince Nicholas (Nicolae), the grandson of His Majesty King Michael I, from his first visit to Romania in 1992 to his decision to settle down in Romania, in 2012. The reader has the opportunity of knowing Prince Nicholas from his earliest childhood, a fan of knightly stories, but also willing to explore the world, a dynamic adolescent with a passion for cars, just like his royal grandfather, recounting with a genuine sense of humour the adventures he went through in his attempt to obtain a driver’s license in Kenya. As a young man, Prince Nicholas went to a traditional British college and studied management in England, while keeping to his passion for sports: he played football, cricket, grass hockey, lacrosse, and rugby, went scuba diving into the ocean and worked as a rafting instructor in Africa. Moreover, this is a young man who sat at the same table as Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, with his uncles and cousins of the European Royal Families, but also with homeless children and within charitable institutions. The same young man has assumed at present the duties of Prince of Romania.

Book Jews and Germans in Eastern Europe

Download or read book Jews and Germans in Eastern Europe written by Tobias Grill and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries Jews and Germans were economically and culturally of significant importance in East-Central and Eastern Europe. Since both groups had a very similar background of origin (Central Europe) and spoke languages which are related to each other (German/Yiddish), the question arises to what extent Jews and Germans in Eastern Europe share common historical developments and experiences. This volume aims to explore not only entanglements and interdependences of Jews and Germans in Eastern Europe from the late middle ages to the 20th century, but also comparative aspects of these two communities. Moreover, the perception of Jews as Germans in this region is also discussed in detail.

Download or read book Final Report written by International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania was established in October 2003 on the initiative of Ion Iliescu, the President of Romania; this final report was presented to him in November 2004. The aim of the Commission was to research the facts and determine the truth about the Holocaust in Romania during World War II. The report examines various aspects of the state-organized participation of Romania in the mass murder of Jews in Romania and in Romanian-controlled territories, as well as in northern Transylvania where the genocide was perpetrated by the Nazis and their Hungarian allies. Inter alia, it discusses antisemitism and the evolution of Romanian anti-Jewish policies from the late 1930s to 1944, the impact of the Soviet annexation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina on antisemitism in Romania, anti-Jewish incidents in 1940 and the pogroms in Bucharest and Iaşi, mass murders of Jews in the recaptured provinces and deportation to Transnistria in 1941, mass murder of Jews in Odessa and in Transnistrian camps, the "Romanianization" of the economy and the expropriation of Romanian Jews, the reaction of the Jewish community in Romania to anti-Jewish policies, and the personal responsibility of Ion Antonescu for the genocide. Relates, also, to war crimes trials held in Romania, and to the trivialization of the Holocaust and its "selective" and outright denial in postwar Romania.

Book Intellectuals and Fascism in Interwar Romania

Download or read book Intellectuals and Fascism in Interwar Romania written by Cristina A. Bejan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1930s Bucharest, some of the country’s most brilliant young intellectuals converged to form the Criterion Association. Bound by friendship and the dream of a new, modern Romania, their members included historian Mircea Eliade, critic Petru Comarnescu, Jewish playwright Mihail Sebastian and a host of other philosophers and artists. Together, they built a vibrant cultural scene that flourished for a few short years, before fascism and scandal splintered their ranks. Cristina A. Bejan asks how the far-right Iron Guard came to eclipse the appeal of liberalism for so many of Romania’s intellectual elite, drawing on diaries, memoirs and other writings to examine the collision of culture and extremism in the interwar years. The first English-language study of Criterion and the most thorough to date in any language, this book grapples with the complexities of Romanian intellectual life in the moments before collapse.

Download or read book Blood and Homeland written by Marius Turda and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of eugenics and racial nationalism in Central and Southeast Europe is a neglected topic of analysis in contemporary scholarship. Moreover, national historiographies in Central and Southeast Europe have either marginalized eugenics and racial nationalism or deemed them incompatible with their respective national traditions. Accordingly, this volume has a two-fold ambition: to excavate the hitherto unknown eugenic movements in Central and Southeast Europe and to explain their relationship with racism, nationalism and anti-Semitism. On the one hand, the historiographic perspective substantiated in this volume connects developments in the history of racial anthropology, genetics and eugenics with political ideologies such as racial nationalism and anti-Semitism; on the other hand, it contests the 'Sonderweg' approach adopted by scholars dealing these phenomena in Central and Southeast Europe by arguing that concerns with eugenics and race were as widely disseminated in these regions as they were in Western Europe and North America. Book War and Gold

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kwasi Kwarteng
  • Publisher : PublicAffairs
  • Release : 2014-05-27
  • ISBN : 1610391969
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book War and Gold written by Kwasi Kwarteng and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world was wild for gold. After discovering the Americas, and under pressure to defend their vast dominion, the Habsburgs of Spain promoted gold and silver exploration in the New World with ruthless urgency. But, the great influx of wealth brought home by plundering conquistadors couldn't compensate for the Spanish government's extraordinary military spending, which would eventually bankrupt the country multiple times over and lead to the demise of the great empire. Gold became synonymous with financial dependability, and following the devastating chaos of World War I, the gold standard came to express the order of the free market system. Warfare in pursuit of wealth required borrowing -- a quickly compulsive dependency for many governments. And when people lost confidence in the promissory notes and paper currencies issued during wartime, governments again turned to gold. In this captivating historical study, Kwarteng exposes a pattern of war-waging and financial debt -- bedmates like April and taxes that go back hundreds of years, from the French Revolution to the emergence of modern-day China. His evidence is as rich and colorful as it is sweeping. And it starts and ends with gold.
